NPD Sales Results for August 2014 [Up4: PS4 #1, XB1 last week sales 2x last Jul week]

Markitron

Is currently staging a hunger strike outside Gearbox HQ while trying to hate them to death
Madden is currently tied to the Xbox brand but in no way is it as much as COD.

Whilst that is probably true (I don't know the first thing about Madden) I think my point is still relevant.

CoD is on PS4 as well

Eh I think you're underestimating the strength of marketing and exclusive content. On every major retailer site the XB1 version is ahead of the PS4 version. If we use Amazon as an example(since this is what most GAF users use with Destiny and the like), the standalone version of the game, bundle AND limited edition are all higher than the highest charting PS4 sku.

All marketing will note the exclusive content and promote the Xbox One version just as Sony has done with Destiny, so I think your kinda reaching with that statement... Destiny is still a system seller for the PS4 regardless of it being multiplat just like Advanced Warfare will be for Xbox One, period.

I don't understand why Microsoft feels the need to be misleading with their PR. They should just take a page out of Sony's playbook and keep quiet when they're losing.

This made me lulz. I agree though, seriously at this point just stay mum. I don't think they've had a single win this generation.

First?

The console hasn't had a price drop in name only.

Switching bundles, adding games, adding *any* free games, and adding $50 gift cards are, for all practical purposes, price drops.

The effective price that a consumer pays for an Xbox One unit has been on a downwards slope since Titanfall.

Bundles aren't really price drops. MSRP of $300 for Kinectless XB1 (standard SKU) would be a true price drop.

I would like to see the platform breakdown for Madden and Call of Duty for the PS3 and 360.

Anyone know?

In terms of what really matters to consumers, this is a completely meaningless distinction.

the battlefield 4 ranking is REALLY strange man. The game is selling the best on the worst platforms! Why is that? The PS4 and Xbone version are vastly superior

Top 10 Software ranking in OP is for the month of August 2014 only

As such next-gen software has generally had worse legs than last gen software due to lower install bases but far better sales in the first month or so as the strongest buyers of software move to next-gen first

Next-gen BF4 could very well have sold more than last-gen LTD although I'm unsure of that

But didn't CoD Ghosts PS4 outsold the xbone version?

That's exclusive marketing and content down the drain.

No it's not. Consumers may not want what comes in bundles and would prefer to just have the system itself cheaper (and buy something else alongside it).

For example, I could easily see a $350 Kinectless Xbox One doing better than the $400 Sunset Overdrive bundle.

For Microsoft to win November, they need to propose Halo MCC, CoD, Destiny and 1 year Gold in a 400$ bundle.

Even then I'm not so sure.

IMO, the war is over, but I'm biased, as I thought it was already over after E3 2013.

Is MS doesn't win November, then I will be speechless. If they can't win with MCC and COD in the same month, WITH bundles, then nothing will save them.

Especially with Sony's 2015 which looks absolutely killer.

I never understood the "Wow", "Oh snap" Surprised", etc responses in these NPD threads.

The PS4 is almost if not literally doubling the Xbox One in install base.

I mean... You'd have to be pretty bad at math not to expect these NPDs.

If I can predict this every month, can I has Pachters job?!

Worldwide yes PS4 is, in all likelihood, more than double XB1 sales but it's a different story in the States which is consequently where this data comes from. So it's all the more surprising when it happens in the US with a much smaller sales gap than the world at large.

It was $499 at launch now its $399.

People dont care how it happen.

My original point was never about that. This discussion started simply from me saying "first price drop". A new cheaper SKU isn't a price drop. A price drop would have been the Kinect SKU going down to $400.

Also, FYI there are people who wished the kinect bundle would have dropped to that price so no -- not all people see it the way would laid it out in your post.

I'm really not sure what you are trying to argue. It's an absurd technicality to harp on, when at least a portion of the demand curve values the bundled software at $60.

Do we not "count it as a price drop" if somehow the next iteration that comes out at $350 has a slightly different design or shape?

Your own logic that some consumers "would prefer to just have the system itself cheaper" betrays you, by the way: From that perspective, unbundling Kinect was a price drop. If removing Madden from a bundle and charging $50 less is a price drop, why isn't removing Kinect from a bundle and charging $100 less one?

Like I discussed with you before I think August is likely misleading

September Amazon has PS4 regular SKU at 95, XB1 regular SKU at 96 so still not enough information imo

But didn't CoD Ghosts PS4 outsold the xbone version?

That's exclusive marketing and content down the drain.

According to Aquamarine it hasn't at least in the US. I'm not sure about WW. Recent NPD numbers have also showcased the XboxOne and 360 version selling better than the PS4 version, just as it has in this thread, so clearly marketing has played a role.

Regardless, CoD Ghosts sales on current gen will not be an accurate indicator of anything happening with Advanced Warfare. Most sales of the game were on 360 and PS3 where the game originally released where the 360 far outsold the PS3 version. Bad word of mouth about the game's quality also hindered sales for current gen.

So if we consider these things plus the bundle, exclusive content, marketing, strength of the brand on Xbox and retailer charts, it seems very likely that the XB1 version will outsell the PS4 version. It is not guaranteed though obviously.

Why would that be a shock? Because of Call of Duty XOne bundle? 0_0

It will.

Unless MS decides to do a CoD + Halo MCC bundle for $399 then its a different story lol.

its COD and Halo, both big games on Xbox (even if the latter is a remake its 4 games in one package) plus the holiday boost that month usually gives.

if that's not enough for them to make a mark, then damn.

I think it depends on what Sony will have.
LBP alone will probably not do much but if they get a GTA V bundle and maybe a Far Cry 4 bundle they most likely will take Nov/Dec.

You are the one that made it a big deal. I simply said "first price drop" and you responded to it.

Not if tot becomes the new standard -- They are getting the same item just redesigned.

Edit: Saw the price. $350 yes -- if it's the Kinectless bundle redesigned.

Your own logic that some consumers "would prefer to just have the system itself cheaper" betrays you, by the way: From that perspective, unbundling Kinect was a price drop.

Heh, you are tying two different two points together.

...It wasn't considering the only model there was before then was XB1 + Kinect.

There has definitely been many deals that have made getting an XB1 a better value to many in comparison to launch but the system never had a true price drop. Me saying that was never intended to be a "just wait until..." point or anything of that nature. I simply said that I could see the Kinectless SKU getting dropped to $300 next year if the system has a bit disappointing Holiday season.

That's very possible, but if anything September would be more misleading with the massive influx of PS4 owners due to Destiny. I think many people are underestimating how well the CoD bundle will do.

Eh I'm not convinced that people who buy a Destiny bundled PS4 4 days ago are going to run in mass to Amazon to pre-order COD:AW when it's almost guaranteed most of them won't have even finished the story of Destiny by now

Whereas with the Gamescom introduction of COD AW's multiplayer being heavily Xbox branded and in early April, I can totally see August pre-orders being skewed by that

Furthermore though I don't really hold august or September amazon rankings to be super interesting at the moment again because COD AW hasn't broken into the Top 100 for the year which it will almost assuredly do thus pre-orders haven't got to critical mass yet

Hard to imagine there are plenty of Halo fans waiting for MCC to arrive for them to buy the Xbox One, I mean, enough to change the narrative so far. We'll probably see an effect similar to MK8 or Titanfall.

I don't think any game alone can change anything. When was the last time a game did that to a platform? WiiSports? Pokemon?

I am underestimating it. $500 SKUs haven't been the best of performers.

I guess we will have to wait and see. If Titanfall back in March didn't help XOne outsell PS4 in a month, I was pretty much convinced that nothing will unless XOne gets a whole bunch of big exclusives in one month.

IMO, not many people will buy one whole console just for some Halo HD remasters. I think it will chart, however, only for the people who already own an XOne. It's the Mario Kart 8 effect pretty much.

As for Call of Duty, I think it will help move more XOne consoles too but not enough of the difference to outsell a PS4 for that month. But I could be wrong. XD
