NPD Sales Results for August 2015 [PS4 #1 HW/SW, 7M Amiibos LTD, 600K LTD Splatoon]

This argument "it's just X days, let's wait next month" is a very old excuse in NPD threads and usually leads to disappointment.
If you split it across two months then yes, but if sales were over an equal amount of time it would do better this month.

But with the coverage on YouTube (number one game of the month) it could be an exception to the rule - especially with the lack of hype pre launch.

To all these folks going on about a ps4 price drop, I just don't see why Sony would rush for one. They're outselling the competition (who is practically giving away their system) for the bulk of the year with another big year ahead. Sony has made it clear that they don't care about losing a couple months if they're still on top most of the year. I don't see them rushing to drop the price tbh, especially to $299.

Until Dawn has (had) so much potential to be a hit if Sony marketed it correctly. Such a shame they sent a great game out to die like this.

I know there is no way to know this but I have a feeling that the digital:physical ratio for RR is much higher than for Until Dawn, making it's sales even greater than UD's

RR is a perfect "game" to have digitally. I'm hesitant myself on pulling the trigger on getting UD digitally (still need to use my PLAY2015 coupon) as I'm concerned that it's a 'one and done' type game.

EDIT: as in terms of "success" even if UD sold more, I imagine that RR turns out more profitable in the long run than UD and that is what MS and Sony really cares about.

Everyone I know who has purchased rare replay has done so digitally including myself.

And for what's its worth I think anyone who buys games digitally (day one) enjoys the fact that it can be pre loaded then on the day of its release its ready to play by the time you get home from work.

This is true as they really don't need to based on sales until E3..its a matter of if Sony has any desires to drop the price.

It really shouldn't matter who is number one, it should be about competition which is good for gamers and industry.

What I would like to see by the end of the year is where each company stands in recouping the research and development costs. Not to mention the legs from the 360 and PS3 Gen which should be making mostly profit now I would think.

I mean you have digital sales, accessory sales, extra controllers and other psn/xbl store purchases. Not to mention more accessible dlc now days.

I remember having to navigate quite a few menus on the 360 to purchase halo 3 maps.

I knew the numbers would be close this month but I though Xbox One would win thanks to the insane TV deal.

Maybe if was a Walmart deal. I believe Best Buy didn't even had so much consoles and Tvs to offer (Samsung TV was replaced for Toshiba) and it's a retailer with lower market share.

I'm more shocked that the X1 did win by a large margin than I am at how much the PS4 won by. Actually I'm shocked the PS4 won at all. Gears, Rare Replay, $500 for a X1+TV Best Buy deal. How did that not take the cake?

Agreed, RR did not sell particularly well. If anything it proves that there isn't much of a market for such games outside of the hardcore retro fans crowd. By all accounts it is an excellent remaster.
Yeah RR is purely fan service game. It's more niche than Until Dawn. And probably cost only fraction of it to make.

Well for people who love other types of games, it isn't just Uncharted that's coming to PS4 in October:

Journey Collector's Edition
Disgaea 5
Dragon Quest Heroes
Tales of Zestiria

Not a bad month if I do say so myself.
We don't even know if there will be a price-cut by then

lol, I was just kidding.

The Talos Principle is coming in October also. But these games don't matter remember? They're not AAA and won't sell 100 million. Who cares about having different kinds of games to choose from.

I know there is some more vocal support for a digital market report, is this an ongoing issue to raise it in the US as well.

We all like to banter about a bit but at the mo a game can be slated for what is perceived low sales when we don't actually know how many it did sell on all reatail platforms.

Horrendous number for Etrian Odyssey and One Piece.

Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold debut is in line with what the series usually sells.

[3DS] Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan - 14,500
[3DS] Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl - 9,000
[3DS] Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight ~ 13,000

And what does this have to do with NPD? Unless you mean to tell me that game will have correlation to console sales.

How does Musou usually sell 1st month? I know Hyrule Warriors did really well but do we have anything else recent to compare OPPW3 with like DW8 or SW4?

Nervous now about how DQ Heroes is going to perform. Especially since a lot might be riding on it for the future of DQ localization. :/

I don't know why a lot thought one retailer deal (best buy)would help xb1 top.it was a good deal but a deal that was in limited supply and a lot of ppl probably didn't know about it.

Either way, glad to see some x1 and ps4 titles making the top especially Rare Replay. Also, Minecraft is still going in strong? MS has a goldmine there.

Good numbers all around!

Small numbers for RR and UD, but I guess that is to be expected :/

Thanks for the chart ZhugeEX! It seems that while the gap is bigger this time around than last year, the gap has been widening at a much slower rate than last year.
Last Jan-August, the gap grew by about ~550k.
This Jan-August, the gap grew by about ~300k which is almost half of last year.

This is good news for Microsoft as it means the $50 lower pricetag is making the desired difference, even if it is not enough to overtake PS4.

Microsoft's biggest problem though, is the fact that PS4 will likely get cut $100 sometime next year. And undercutting that by $50 will not be easy.

Yeah, I was remembering correctly; EO is such a niche series but apparently Atlus is happy with those results...? Also, EOU2 actually debuted bettern than EOU.

We are not grading on a curve here. Hi. I have a specific request for service. Do you or don't you think 90k are good sales for the first month of a game? My whole point is that it is a niche genre and can never expect to have decent sales. It is no defense of a game's sales to say that you expected them to be poor all along.

Edit: Oh, and this game will NOT have legs.

I'd say it was reasonable for a first what, 5 days? With little above the line marketing and it being a niche genre and all.

Listen to yourselves about Until Dawn. "It needs advertising" it's 2015, nothing needs advertising we have the internet. Face it, US don't go for these kind of games, COD will sell a shit load, Destiny will sell a shit load, Battlefront will sell a shit load. The US market has dug their heels in about which games they'll spend money on, and games like Until Dawn will make up the numbers it needs to profit in other markets.

Well, it's a good console for play Nintendo franchises. Even Gamecube that was the worst seller had much more than that.

Wii U should be $199 right now, I suppose they can't because of GamePad.
I think they're not being as aggressive with bundling as they could be. Mario Maker should be standard, splatoon shouldn't be retailer exclusive, and Nintendo Land should be all bundles no question, if it isn't already (I think there's one or two where it wasn't included).

August last year it was ~760k gap now its ~800k

Not sure how being further behind is a good thing.

But it was the price that made the difference. Nearly any game could of been included and sales works of been the same.

Was the combination of price and 2 games for free.

I'm sure Tomb Raider will receive a bundle with another game too (maybe Tomb Raider Definitive Edition). If Microsoft keep the price at $349 I think they should be more aggressive and include a third game, or a second game that has more appeal that Tomb Raider DE.

You might be right with the second part, sadly, but I think saying advertising is pointless as we have internet is a little too extreme.
How about a compromise: Advertising on the internet.

What I said in the post was that while the gap is now bigger, the rate at which it is widening is much lower.
X1 entered 2014 ~200k units behind ps4
X1 entered 2015 ~500k units behind ps4

And yet the August gap is about the same.
.....if you look at YOY trends, X1 is up from last year ~18% while PS4 is practically flat YOY.

So the good news for Sony is that the PS4 has some tremendous legs, and is still selling just as good as last year with no price drop.
The good news for MS is that X1 sales are up about 18% YoY thanks to a $50 pricedrop.

He didn't say that it was a good thing.

But rather, the gap between the two is widening slower.

Gotcha, actually misread but after 2 cups of coffee, i'm with you all. Was reading it as they catching up. Not that they are not falling behind as fast as before.

Just ignore me for today.

If it only was the 50$ price drop.

Well if you are comparing the first half of each year to each other, the entry price droped $150, but it is still technically a $50 pricedrop as Kinect bundles still cost $100 more.

For months June-August, the entry price is only $50 lower YOY, though they did introduce a higher $400 1 TB SKU in June as well which has contributed to overall sales....

But yes, the X1 price history is rather convoluted unfortunately
