Yup. Just wait. Once Mario and Uncharted and Gears and God of War and Forza and Gran Turismo are all on the same system and everyone has only that system they will all sell soooo much more and developers will be so excited that their dedicated fan bases now have so many more options to compete for their attention, they'll be sure to take these exciting brands into crazy directions to stand out from the pack! Man that M 18-34 must be saving sooooo much money by only owning one console that he's sure to purchase THREE TIMES the number of games he used to so pubs can see at least the same revenue. Who needs segments anyway?! Let's all advertise to the same people, save money their too!

It does pose a quandary. Assuming for a minute that Sony anticipated a far more gradual collapse of last gen software as the rest of the industry seemed to, then a cheaper PS3 SKU released at E3 this year might make sense of the R&D cost for it
But with how fast the decline is in last gen software, would Sony still choose to release the new SKU as the R&D is already paid for?

I'm pretty sure it has to be higher. Outside of the UK, it's dead pretty much everywhere else. But yea, either way it could be that that I'd the reason for going with shipped instead of sold through, since they may not even be at 4 million

Sony is still driving the installed base where it matters. In Europe they have been very aggressive in pushing the PS3 with FIFA World Cup (7th gen exclusive). You could get a PS3 with 2 controllers and the game for 189. It'll probably be the last push, though.
The obvious thing would be a $/150 system as a Roku competitor instead of a futile attempt to make the VITA TV happen.

I think the overly long generation has left less demand for the previous generation platform. Sony seems unable or unwilling to drive PS3 lower, so they may be happy just letting the platform slowly die off.

As others have said, Sony sells as many PS4 in a month as MS ships X1 in an entire quarter. So yea, sounds about right

Short. Sighted. Ps2 success gave you a shitty expensive ps3 launch no one wanted. Xbox 360 success gives you an xbone living room drm entertainment hub people are laughing at. Wii runaway success gives you a Wii u no one will touchPad due to old tech.
The underdogs take the next cycle because they are depserste to take risk and innovative, or they know they'd lose. Market leaders play it safe and stick to their long term vision. You need competition to foster change and disrupt that vision.
Can you imagine if there was only one box now, that drove out the other two and no new players releasing another the next cycle? You'd be in a terrible position. Trust the experts.

At this point it seems xb1 will be behind ps4 this entire gen. Ps4 will always get the better multiplats cause it will always have the technical advantage.
When Microsoft does a price drop Sony will do one. As long as Microsoft keeps believing in kinect, the ps4 will always be cheaper.
Even with a kinect less SKU at the same price as a ps4, the general knowledge will be the ps4 is the more powerful console and runs games better.
Microsoft has yet to show a single kinect feature that is worthy of that extra 100 premium they put on it. Not even Titanfall, a game which Microsoft hyped for Xbox one basically ignoring the 360 and Pc version, even uses kinect.
Microsoft seriously needs to blow this E3 out of the water.
At this point I cannot see them showing something so unbelievably amazing that puts to shame what Sony shows. I don't see either of them blowing each other out of the water at e3.

If they have PS4 dominion, i highly doubt they'd repeat the PS3 fiasco.
I mean, they know what the outcome'll be.
If anything, i expect the PS5 to simply be a beefier PS4 with better hardware and integrated VR, but i cannot see Sony going the arrogant route again.

You're talking about successors. If you approach it from the games angle, both PS2 and 360 gens were great for games. You're kind of skewing what was being talked about before, which was the fallacious argument that 'competition', which I assume in this case means the XB1 selling comparably to the PS4, is the only way we can get good games. Do you honestly believe that to be the case?

There was a lot of competition in the ps1 era.
It was because of the success of the platform - and the crazy innovation Sony brought to the table coming off the mistakes of so many players, that they sold so well over that cycle. Which is exactly my point.

This pretty much. Gamers have been vying for a new generation for several years, so it's not surprising people were quick to leave their old consoles for their new ones.
Seeing how the PS2 had an over 12 year lifespan, and we're already on the 7th year of the PS3's lifespan, I do wonder for how long the PS3 is going to last. How has the PS3 done in its 7th year compared to the PS2 in its 7th year? I'm too lazy to Google/search for the stats, but I'm thinking its sales performance would be below that of its older brother.

Yup. Look how expensive that ecosystem was. Look how closed and controlled it was. There was no real competition. The PSP forced Nintendo to look at things they didn't care about, graphics, online, whatever. And it was still so fragile that mobile can come in SO quickly with an open system, low pricing, and totally disrupt their empire. I can't wait to see what Nintendo does next i n his space. Hell I'm losing money on that platform but as a gamer, bring on competition and innovation!

I'm not replying to anyone trying to spin my conversation into a console wars debate. Why assume I'm talking about any one platform? I've said a million times over 8+ years that I want a diverse, open, competitive and successful industry. Do I touch my Xbox one? Rarely. Do I want it to sell? Of course. Rising tide raises all ships.
Edit: tho I'm not all rosy, there are always things that are no longer sustainable or able to be monetizrd, and some of these devices need to be shot and there players need to come back with something the market responds better to.

What you talkin about? The explosions are the best part. Makes for entertaining posting. Plus some of the best image edits come from them.
Makes me wonder though. If it wasn't for Titanfall, what would the XBone's numbers be? Although the PS4 has been behind the XBone since its launch in terms of attach rate, it's been slowly getting closer and closer to the XBone's. TF helped the XBone get a bit of a gap, but that gap doesn't seem as big as it should be for something that was supposed to be that system's "killer app".
yeah now that I think about it, I'd say 150k-250k. May is too weird of a month to hit 300k considering Wii U's situation. I'm also assuming they're going to have a Mario Kart 8 Wii U bundle ready for launch day. If not, it'll definitely be closer to that 150k figure, possibly less.
Would those numbers be a part of the May NPD or June NPD? considering the game is out May 30.
