NPD Sales Results for November 2014 [Up3: NPD Data Error, AC:U #5]

You know November NPD didn't go as planned for MS when MajorNelson posts this on Twitter half an hour after the NPD release:

;)

They've been getting slaughtered all year, I wasn't expecting them to go puffing their chests out over one month even without the cboat numbers

So the UK mention is just a bullet point, we probably won't get any numbers out of MS. Either they just want to boast about the win in the UK or they are trying to bolster the NPD victory beyond the actual numbers which are rumoured to be of almost insignificant difference.

From retail musings and al, the other anecdotes of MS on Black Friday does this mean that they simply didn't have enough consoles on the shelf? Did Sony do better during the rest of the month and sell through after the early rush on Xbox leave them able to sell unopposed in shops for the next few days to Cyber Monday.

Assuming they sold 900k they lost at least $54,000,000 in potential profits.... (Difference between regular price and sale price) That assumes a $60~ difference I saw someone say $70~ difference which would be another million dollars added on to the difference.

That assumes 900k consoles sold. This is not a guaranteed "loss" per say, at least as far as the how much microsoft would report as a loss. Just how much was "lost" (potential profits) selling the consoles for cheaper.

That's just the price drop they did. They also had to pay ubisoft for the assassin creed games. Of course they didn't pay retail, but I would assume they still had to pay ubisoft at least 30-40 for each bundle sold? That added with the price drop could have cost them nearly $100 per console.

wtf is this lmao?

Wheres your source for this made up mumbo jumbo?

Nadella has stated in interviews that the Xbox isn't part Microsoft's core business, that they have intentions of 'growing the brand' but...the brand isn't growing, despite the money they've thrown at it, it's not doing particularly well.

Coupled with investors putting on pressure to drop the brand. Well...

Hell, I own an Xbox One, I'm someone who doesn't buy Sony products...I honestly don't see them bothering next generation.

They haven't tried that thing called price cutting in a long time. It's still more expensive than a PS3 and 360.

They can't lower the price unless they want to bleed money. The GamePad is still expensive to manufacture due to the NFC reader. They have to grin and bear it for another year or two. Arguably the most poorly designed console in history.

How is it minimal results? It led to their best month ever. Lets face it, Xbox One is never going to beat PS4 in worldwide sales. I know it, you know it, Sony knows it, MS knows it. That doesn't mean Xbox One can't be a successful product for MS.

Having a meaningful presence in only one or two countries isn't successful.

He could perhaps not be lying, but he may be talking about a difference of another sort. He didn't specify what the difference was.

We took it and ran.

Either way, the PS4 is a monster and it looks like both consoles flirted with 1M at the very least, which is awesome!

Come on, we all know what was meant by the post. It wouldn't have taken off the way it did if there was any confusion and I doubt Kagari would have mentioned the same on twitter.

Guys, we are taking this 7-10k difference as truth, which we shouldn't.

We are going to look foolish if those numbers aren't accurate at all.

It will never, EVER reach 30 million. Ever. The most it's doing is 15, and that's if they manage to secure some... eh, who am I kidding. Even that's too optimistic.

the last card nintendo can play is reducing the price.

Let's try to guess: what would a $149.99 smash bunble do for the console?

that could really bring the console near 20 million in my opinion.

That would imply that MS suffered "devastating losses". Are you daft?
Give it up, I think most reasonable people would accept that in this case the Xbox 'victory' could also (literally) be seen as a loss.

Nobody is saying that MS as a whole is in danger of going bankrupt over it, it's just in reference to the xbox division and how it actually feels like Sony won (and on revenue and profit they probably did).

It's bad man.

Here's how.

1. In order to achieve this win, Microsoft had to deeply devalue the product they had been offering all year for higher prices. Consumers jumped in - with a big jump early in November - but according to insiders, Sony may have even won Black Friday and it was those early two weeks that allowed Microsoft to keep the overall win.

2. So, due to this fact, what happens? Will Microsoft have to keep the price at $349? I don't see any viable alternative if they want to stay even remotely competitive now. If they go up to $399, consumers are going to wait it out knowing Microsoft will take drastic price cutting measures if they feel threatened from a marketshare point-of-view. So they'd just as likely wait it out. Consider Xbox division is already under pressure to start making a profit and being a viable pillar, many interal debates between services & devices and the other divisions. In order to just barely win, they had to cut in deep to their profit margin.

3. This means that once the glow of the price change is over, the trajectory indicates it's very likely now PS4 is just going to go back to winning every month. This is the last thing Microsoft wanted. Now they've devalued their platform, their profit margins are diminished, and PS4 is still the marketleader getting their good PR. Microsoft gained almost nothing in the exchange, except perhaps to tell third parties planning to publish games in the West that it's still important to make ports for XBO and engage in marketing deals with MS for some exclusivity and other mutually beneficial deals.

4. With all the game announcements from Sony in December (in fact so many that PS4 is dominating December discussion, in a crucial period of the time when families come together and thus quickly spread their opinions on personal events, TV shows, games, etc), it's not likely Microsoft is going to have room to breathe to make a second month upset. Microsoft Store is selling their system at an astonishing $349 AC Bundle with two free games on top of it, but it will not be enough with numbers that look like this even for November NPD.

None of this means XBO is selling poorly, it probably did quite well if it's that close and edged out PS4. But it does now mean the future is clear: Sony has this generation in the bag in terms of system sales, including in US and UK, and that Microsoft is going to have a very hard fight to even keep their unit sales competitive in their only two remaining viable territories.

I don't understand why you're looking at this just from the perspective of a console war. Yeah, if you're looking at this as Sony vs. Microsoft then you're right, but just in terms of sales Microsoft was likely extremely successful this holiday season. If Microsoft met their sales number goals than they're going to be happy, Sony vs. Microsoft doesn't matter in anything other than fanboy wars as long as Microsoft can still secure positive third-party relations and solid sales. If both the PS4 and the Xbox One sold over 1 million then both consoles "won".

If this is true, then what will MS have to do to actually start to make a meaningful dent in Sony's lead?

Nothing. They're fucked. They undercut the competition by as much as $120 dollars and gave away extra games on top of it just to pull even with Sony. This is in their strongest territory with a release from their biggest franchise, Halo, with the biggest shopping days of the year.

What possible scenario gives them a better shot? Their first party isn't as strong an asset as Nintendo, for example, and most third-party companies are smarter than to give away exclusives to a console that's clearly struggling to keep pace in marketshare without an astoundingly large money hat.

They're just going to have to throw endless money at the situation to stay close but it's probably a good idea to abandon ideas of denting any lead in the near future.

Wii U sales are pretty terrible. Almost certain to be the worst selling Nintendo home console ever.

XB1 vs PS4 is crazy if the 10K gap is real. Sony has this generation in the bag.

If MS really won by that small of a margin, it's done nothing to help them. PS4 kept its pace and November will do nothing to close the sales gap between the two competing boxes. That's an awful lot of time and manpower spent to accomplish very, very little.

Outside of still cracking up over the 7-10k difference (assuming that's true), the Wii U numbers make me sad as someone who's recently really warmed up to the system. Nintendo's gonna have to lie in the bed they made this console generation it looks like.

What devastating costs? Are you a MS stock holder? Do you know their detailed financial plan?

It comes down to this, the brand is healthy and you guys are talking out of your ass.

Unsurprisingly, you failed to even remotely convincingly respond to the point I was making (in fact, this post suggests it went right over your head).

This is a sales thread. Additionally, one does not need to be a stock holder to comment on the consequences of a business action, nor does one need to own stock to have a convincing understanding of the business implications of different actions.

The 'devastating cost', as could be interpreted, was clearly defined in the post you comically failed to read. And the emphasis on 'devastating' is irrelevant, it just means was the cost they paid - far less margins - and the result it gave - barely winning - enough to overshadow the accomplishment? Yes, it is. It's all anyone is talking about. The implications are legitimately big: It means there is now no way for Xbox One to come in #1 this gen, and it means it's unlikely to even occur in US and UK. That's not good for MS, who went in deep and slashed into their margins to even make this result.

So, that is a totally appropriate opinion to call it a Pyrrhic Victory.

I hope you put in some more effort into your next response, instead of letting your emotions get you carried away.

It depends on how you define victory. Perhaps MS reached or exceeded their internal goal with the price cut and sales, making the "devastating cost" worthwhile. It's not about outselling your competitor, it's about making money.

I so much doubt their goal was the just barely edge out PS4 at a huge profit margin cost. I mean we probably won't get precise definition of what their goal was, but we'll know a little about what they think when they release their next quarterly report

If MS basically won this month on the first 2 weeks of November I could see them taking December by a larger margin. Sony hasn't announced any continuation of the GTA bundle and MS is still doing the $349 AC bundle throughout the rest of the year.

Umm, there are PS4 deals everywhere I go.

Walmart has GTA5 PS4 + 50$ gift card, for example.

that's messed up
Hardware being down makes sense, given last year's launches.

Software "only" being down 2% given other channels, actually indicates growth imo. NPD is going to need to find a way to access digital to continue to paint an accurate picture and remain relevant for software sales.

Congrats to the Xbone, wonder if Sony responds with a price cut of their own or if MS decides to makes the price change permanent next year.
Looking at the 7k difference in November..... my guess is Kaz will cut the price of the PS4 to $398.
THAT will show them!
MS is DONE in december!!
