Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

Ridiculous some people are paying $1000+ for the 1080 FE on eBay. I mean, it only went up (probably by mistake, too) on Amazon, so hasn't even sold out everywhere yet. I can't fathom why you'd pay over MSRP versus just trying to get from some other store on the 27th.

People paid $3000+ for the 20th Anniversary PS4s...

Did people really think the high price would deter scalpers?

As an aside those that were suggesting the high FE price was to prevent scalping were also being utterly ridiculous.

What's the return policy at Microcenter like for graphics cards?

Might want to get the FE and return it once they announce non-FE cards from ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI and the like....

The thirst is real.

Not long enough to do that. Didn't they say the aftermarket cards aren't coming for a month or two.

30 days no questions asked. Really easy to return something there. There are going to be a ton of open boxes soon after launch because a lot of people are planning on doing that.

I wouldn't do that. They might charge you a 15% restocking fee. I'd say 2 weeks tops after launch until custom coolers come out.

Edit : Really BoboBrazil? Good to know. I know fry's is a hit or miss on restocking fees.

No one has said anything, in fact the only thing we've heard is that they were trying to have them at launch. Hopefully computex brings news. MSI is teasing June. Which isn't far away at all.

There really isn't anything out on PC right now that warrants buying the FE version of the card. I'm usually an early adopter but seeing that Doom is running at 70+ on Ultra @1440p on a 980ti, it just doesnt seem worth thirsting over (for me) right now.

So, I just saw this video and it looks interesting, it compares benchmarks between a 1080 and 980ti on various games @1080p and 4K, they even do some 1080 SLI.

There are a few surprises, specially with SOMA.

Machine Specs:

Intel i7 5960X CPU
EVGA GTX 980 SC ACX
Corsair Vengeance LPX 64GB DDR4
Samsung XP941 256GB M.2
Corsair Neutron XT 960 GB SSD
Patriot Ignite 480 GB SSD
Corsair 110i Cooling Unit
Noctua NF-A14 PWM Fans
Noctua NH-D15
Fractal Define R5
Corsair HX1000i PSU
HGST 3TB HDD
Main Monitor: AMH A399U 4K UHD

The 1080 SLI benchmarks are done with a different machine.

The SOMA benchmark looks like the game is CPU limited in performance. What's impressive is that it's apparently CPU limited at even 4k, the game just doesn't need much in the way of GPU grunt.

His benchmarks at 4K show very small improvements for the 1080. Seems that when both cards are overclocked, the 980TI keeps up rather well. Which I guess isn't all that surprising. After all, this isn't the 1080TI.

He doesn't seem to be testing @ stock though, both cards are overclocked (at least the video title suggests that), so who knows if the 1080 FE was throttling.

I have a 980ti currently, but I'm currently in a a position where I can essentially get the 1080 and not lose more than $50 in the process. Would it be worth it?

Well was kind of in the same boat, but I figured that for me it's not worth it, since:

1) The 1080FE at stock speeds is comparable to my OCed 980ti, which is currently more than fast enough for my purposes.

2) I don't want to pay the early adopter tax on the FE, especially because it's just reference card, but I'd still have to sell my ti asap to get the most money for it. That could easily leave me without a decent gpu for like a month.

3) I'd also need to sell my full cover block + backplate and buy new ones for the 1080, which could also cost me $70.

Wish EK would come out and say they are gonna make blocks for the EVGA FTW card. I wan't a card with better power delivery but it can't be taller then reference cards due to the build I have.

Seems like on average 20-25% improvements from the 1080, which is good considering it's an x80 card being compared with an x80ti. I'd have liked to have seen 980 thrown in there too

I would really like to buy a 1080 but having a 2500k i think it's better if I wait for the 1070 right? I'm gonna bottleneck x80 with that CPU if I'm not mistaken.
And being in the field of x70 I have to wait for Polaris, at least in that range they should be competitive... computex can't come soon enough

What clock speed is the 980Ti using? Cant find the info.

Just one problem, looks like he is using a single lane SLI connector in 4K
So maybe it could go faster..

With hardware something is almost always bottlenecking, but the trick is to find a manageable solution. I imagine a 2500k will be fine with a 1080, but not as good as say a 6600k would be. It's not like if you go from a 680 to a 1080 you will see no gain, it just might not be as big as if you had a better CPU.

Either every single other site that has reviewed this card are telling lies or he is, the performance on his video is far less than that on other sites.
How could his super detailed graphs lie, man?
These YT benchmark graphs are just pretty terrible all around. No details on settings, clocks, etc

For example his witcher 3 benchmarks @ 1080p show a 10-12 fps increase where as techpowerup shows a 27fps increase....also the card he is using is apparently overclocked and yet techpowerups isn't and it is showing higher fps? How?

Hairworks.

I am also waiting on this. I want a classified but no point if EK aren't doing waterblocks (already have a custom loop). Apparently (going by a comment on another forum) they said custom blocks will be at least a month after launch. Hoping as soon as EVGA make an official announcement, so will EK.

Got a source on that EK comment?

Maybe but a 17fps drop compared to other sites? Also his firestrike 1080p benches are well off, all his benchmarks are if I am honest.

Here's another benchmark of The Witcher 3 with all cards overclocked.

And here's Techsyndicate's bench.

In both benchmarks there's a 5-7 fps difference at 4K and 14 fps at 1080p. My guess is that he's using Hairworks, but it's the same difference between both benchmarks as you can see.
