Real answer is no one knows when (if ever) they will show up.
I find it really hard to believe that there will be a lot of $599 options, but I could be very very wrong.

Good video. Basically this thing throttles, pretty badly in an OPEN bench rig.
The one criticism I have about this video is that Jay does not state the obvious, which is that he has been able to resolve the throttling issues, by adjusting power, temp, and fan speed limits, but that is at STOCK clocks...which means that the actual headroom for overclocking will be extremely limited, especially in real cases, and will essentially need the fan to run at very high speeds (possibly 100% constantly).
Either way, I suggest waiting for AIB vendor versions.

So conclusion people have made are the founder's cards are a bit lackluster compared to the premium expected (1080 talk here) and we should wait for cards announced with dual power connections because more voltage means that there is increased headroom for squeezing more OC out?
I'm planning on starting to buy new games during summer steam sale so I won't be able to wait much longer.

Thanks for the info, you just stopped me from buying the founders edition.
I'll be using the 1080 in my Silverstone rvz02 so I thought the blower style cooler on the founders edition would be more efficient in this case but like jayz said, he's getting those temps on an open bench so it'll probably be even worse in my rvz02.
Well... now to decide what non-reference card to get.
edit: oooh never mind lets just wait till the damn card comes out :-D

Yep, I've got games lined up to play and I'm currently on hiatus from my PC working down some PS4 backlog while I wait for the custom 1080's.

Those look like 8-pins to me? You're right, you would need 8-pin + 6-pin or 2x 8-pin to deliver more power than 1x 8-pin on the reference card.
B...b...but Nvidia used high-quality components. It's 100$ more for a reason, right?

Cool. Can't wait for tomorrow. I wonder if some retailers already got stock of the custom 1080s or starting next week. The "winking" emote of my local store when I asked them about the customs is sorta getting my hopes up lol. But probably it was just a way to not break NDA.

Videocardz leak of ACX 1080 is really a bad photoshop. Really bad.
Yeah. Couldn't spot it on mobile but it's clear as night and day when viewed fullscreen on PC. Bummer

So to keep your boost clock for longer than a few minutes you need to change the profile and run the card at 85-87° with fan at 60%. I wonder why nobody mentioned this in their reviews. Basically you cant overclock this card unless you're willing to put the fan at 80-100%. And then you might have power throttling. I would definitely wait for partner cards.
Some did go into it, but you need particular software and driver to overclock the GPU and reviewers said they were very buggy. I imagine it was hard to get consistent results.
Yeah. I think only a beta version of EVGA PrecisionX was able to OC etc the 1080 when the reviews dropped and not everybody had access to it + some outlets mentioned bugs.

Keep in mind it's comparing a reference 1080 to an overclocked 980 Ti. Once you get AIB 1080s the gap will probably get back to the ~30% mark from the 13% shown here.
15% restocking fee...
I'll take it.
From these benchmarks coming out after the initial rush of reviews it seems like the Founders Edition is not only an overpriced reference card, but a bad card in general. It throttles during regular use?

Again, in comparison to a 1 year-old design that's in a higher performance bracket. If you compare to the design GP104 is actually replacing you see ~60% improvement with out-of-the-box clocks.
If you have GM200 GPU, this isn't meant for you, no matter how much you wish it to be. Wait for GP102 for your ~60% improvement.
Sure, but the 980ti is clock for clock, better than the 1080 on that benchmark. I wouldn't say it's impressive. Well I guess it's impressive for the 980ti, but not for the 1080.

The 15% restocking fee. As long as I can return the 980Ti within 2 weeks, I'll pick one up.

I would read the fine print carefully before doing this, just in case. Also seems kind of unwise when you could just wait for the 1080, instead of paying $70 or whatever to rent a 980 Ti for 2 weeks.

What's clocks has to do with it? I think that it's pretty impressive that a simpler chip is even faster than the top end GPU of previous generation. It's not usually the case.
The card itself does feel like overpriced though.

That's not a reference 980ti but my ref 980ti runs at 1350mhz stock, nothing touched in afterburner. Is that really an overclocked 980ti? I know I can get 1450mhz+ and +200 on mem easy on my card and gain +5-6 fps in witcher 3 at 1440p.

It would be impressive if the card was priced like a 980, but this card is more expensive than a 980Ti. You have to compare it to a similarly priced card if you want to be fair.

Videocradz is pretty good. They guy running it usually is pretty clear about what is rumor and what he thinks is legit.

Very impressive? I guess I'm just not seeing it. 66 FPS @ 1440p vs 59 FPS from the 980 Ti. That means the 980 Ti is running at 89% of the performance of the 1080. Not impressed.
I guess if I was coming from a 970 or a 700 series card, it'd be pretty nice. Still seems like a poor value to me.

The prices are comparable though, so they should be compared.
The 1080 vs 980ti comparison is just a redo of 980 vs 780ti. It is a slim upgrade, and it never makes sense to upgrade from last years big part to the new smaller node, regardless of pricing. The new part could be $500 and it still wouldn't make sense.

Eh... The 980 was widely considered to be a terrible value though, and sold way less units than the 970. I'm thinking we're looking at the same situation with the 1080.
