Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

Is anyone gonna do a reference board but with more power delivery, so that it's compatible with EK blocks?

I don't know the exact dimensions of the Hybrid, but in the Ncase thread on Hardforum there's been discussions about the FTW Edition. The conclusion is that the FTW Edition couldn't fit in the M1 (maybe with slim power connectors, but not with any normal ones), and the Hybrid appears to use the same PCB design.

You have to look at the height of the Hybrid to see how far it extends past the expansion card bracket. It's much taller than reference designs (and the previous 980ti Hybrid) which are roughly flush with that bracket. Tall cards like that have always been an issue with the M1, and it's only exacerbated by the hoses.

Here's a post from the M1's designer regarding 1080 compatibility with the case.

Water cooling seems pointless with the power delivery limitations of the reference design so I bet EK will make some blocks to work with aftermarket cards that can actually overclock well.

Good luck. EVGA have this bad habit of making three of them at a time and I can only assume send two of them to random parts stores in Macedonia and then putting the remaining one on their estore.

I know, I was following the 980ti avalability, took till like the end of September for them not to sell out in 2 seconds on the EU shop.

We don't even have evga shops in Croatia so I'm gonna have to use their store. Shipping is only 12 euros so I guess it's fine.

guys I need your advice.

I wanna move up my gaming to 1440p. What would be the best value, a new 1080 priced at 920$CAN+tx or a 980ti used for 2 days priced at 600$CAN no taxes?

EDIT: the 980ti version is the Asus Strix OC edition

What game settings do you intend to use, for how long, and what is your FPS target?

Err, the Asus Strix is a great 980TI variant.

It's a pretty clear choice to me, the 980TI by a country mile. The 1080 is about a 25% performance boost over a stock 980TI, and the Strix is a good bit faster (probably about 10% behind a stock 1080).

10% less performance for 33% less cost - there isn't really a question at 1440p. At 4k it's a different issue as the slight advantage of the 1080 puts some games into playable range where they weren't before.

Edit: oh, and overclocked to the low 1400mhz, the 980TI Strix is only about 3-5% slower than a stock 1080. That said, if we're talking overclocking in general, the 1080 pushes that back out to a 20+% performance lead when brought up to like 2.1ghz.
 
Sitting here at the EVGA FTW edition with one in my cart for preorder on EVGA's website and it's spinning and spinning away, not loading. Maybe I should just take it as a sign and give up?

Thank you very much for this. It is a great price (over here that is). With taxes, the 1080 would cost me 400$+ more than what the seller is asking for his 980ti...

Yup, it's a solid buy for 600cad, go for it dude (assuming the seller is on the level etc).

Edit: also you'll likely not even regret it when the 1070 comes out since that's going to be like 590cad (raw conversion from founders price which is what the Strix variant will likely go for). The 1070 is looking to be about the same performance as a 980ti so it'd be like getting one of those.

So we all think the FTW is probably the best option for OC+ air cooled right now on the 1080 front? Just want to double confirm. I plan on using the card for possibly 3+ years (Depends on how good VR develops and the power needs) so I want to make sure I make the right decision here. Thanks again.

Pretty sure a strix or g1 will be better or just as good.
 
So I uh...might have gotten an FTW preorder in? I submitted everything and it took me back to the 1080 product page. I haven't gotten an email and I can't load the order history page.

Do we think the pricing is going to be comparable? If the difference is <5% for power versus price I am not overly concerned. I am actually still on 1080p right now so until I upgrade my monitor (and until I get VR either late this year or early next) my build is super overkill atm.

Strix will probably be the best and cheaper too, $639 i believe. Im not a fan of evga nor their coolers so i didnt preorder but they do have top notch warranty and you can always step up.
 
Out of the announced GTX 1080's right now, I think the Asus Strix seems to be the best value, with a MSRP of $620 but with the same cooling as the OC version at $640. It also looks like it has 8+2 power phases so it will hopefully perform decently when overclocking.

The EVGA FTW edition also seems like a great card but its about $50 more at $670. So the Asus seems to be the better value here.

The Gigabyte G1 seems like a poor choice given it only uses 1 8 pin connector.

The only concern I have with the Asus Strix card is whether it will fit with my mATX motherboard and mATX Corsair Obsidian Case as it says the card is 3 slots.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the extra slot (3rd slot) will be below the current card right? I'm using a dual slot Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 right now. I'd hate to send the card back cause its such a hassle living overseas.
