Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

Ordered a FTW and SC edition. Still haven't decided if i'm getting a 1070 or a 1080 but I guess it's best to be prepared.

Is the FTW version even worth it? Doesn't seem like these cards have much OC potential

The FTW and other cards with custom PCBs should have much better overclocking potential than cards based on the reference design.

At least from impressions that have come out for custom cards, it seems pascal in general sucks at overclocking compared to maxwell.

I don't even know what I just preordered. There's time later to figure it out.

Same here, haha. I just clicked the link and went through the check out process.

Turns out it's the FTW edition, which is what I was hoping to get (that or the SC edition, or ASUS's Strix).

Looks like the SC is up, too:

I pre-ordered one of these, too, just in case. The final specs for the FTW aren't released yet, are they? Need to know the release date for both, too.

Has there ever been a situation where the SC beat our the FTW in terms of performance out-of-the-box? Not terribly familiar with EVGA's product line. Is the FTW primarily just for people looking to tweak and overclock?

I believe the SC is based on the FE PCB, while the FTW and Classified have improved PCBs and power delivery.

Hopefully that is enough acronyms for you.

Out of the box, no. The FTW is a higher clocked SKU than the SC.

Anecdotally, I had a FTW and an SC 980 in SLi, and on their own, the SC overclocked to higher overall clocks than the FTW, even though the FTW came overclocked higher stock. Just part of the silicon lottery.

Certainly, but only as a result of the Silicon lottery, and not related to the worse pcb, power delivery, and cooler found on SC vs the FTW. This is of course with some fooling around in afterburner. Out of the box an FTW should have a higher boost clock than an SC, but it is possible I suppose that a an SC might boost quite a bit higher than advertised out of the box, and beat an ftw out of the box if the FTW lost the Silicon lottery.

Edit: beaten by finalflame

I think the FTW and SC in the past had the same cooler though right? This years the FTW has the classified cooler it looks like, slightly wider with larger fans.

Yes previously SC and FTW had the same cooler.

I kind of dislike that it doesn't, as I was hoping to put an ftw in a hadron air, and I don't think it will fit. Hoping the 1070 ftw doesn't have the bulky pcb too.

Seeing some of the 1070 reviews is tempting me towards the 1080. It doesn't offer value for money really (50% more expensive for 25% more power), but it does seem to have a notable step up in performance which should translate into longer legs. Also while the 1070 seems to do well at 1440p, my monitor is 3440x1440 so a little extra stress. And for VR I'm not going to say no to a bit of extra downs amount to clean the image up

Absolutely. Because I love to be able to downsample when possible. It makes games look so much better.

There's no such thing as overkill!

Fair enough and I know there isn't but i'd be pretty content with a 980 at 1080 myself, i'd at least wait until the 1080ti and see what that offers for the price.

Thanks for the responses regarding FTW vs SC. I'll probably stick with the FTW since it's not much more. Assuming the release dates are the same or close, that is.

$717 with tax. Woof.

Oooooh how I love my state.

To confirm... no water blocks will work with the FTW, correct?

Even with a 1080p monitor?

Even if you run everything at 1080p. This ensures that even the most demanding games with all details and reasonable IQ settings turned up will have a minimum frame rate of 60. You can also shoot for higher than 60 fps and/or downsample. I am currently considering either the 1080 or whatever AMD is going to announce for 1080p for those reasons since one card still isn't good enough for 4K 60 fps.
