Nvidia Kepler - Geforce GTX680 Thread - Now with reviews

that's cool, where can i buy nvidias high end card? Also, why are Nvidia pricing their mid range card at $500????!!

The AMD card being beaten by Nvidia's mid-range is the reason you can't buy it, it wouldn't be economical to sell the GK110 when they can just as easily make up their losses by selling the GK104 at an inflated price and marketing it as their flagship. Competition always ends with the consumer winning, so I can't wait to see what AMD comes up to counter it with, because we're hugely overpaying for a midrange card atm.

e: No idea as to the validity of this kind of testing (these are hypothetical tests, not actual), but damn...

So how about that v-sync stuttering issue, eh? I had assumed that buying a new gaming rig with a GTX680 would allow me to run almost any game in smooth 60 FPS, but as it turns out, not a single game will actually do that with v-sync enabled. At least Nvidia has acknowledged the issue and is working on a fix, but it won't arrive until June...

Very annoying indeed :(

I am on my second evga gtx 670 and this one is experiencing BSODs while playing high end games such as BF3 or Cyrsis 2. It always happens around 30-45 minutes into the gameplay. I have played Diablo 3 for hours at a time without an issue.

My Specs
i5 2500k @ 4.2ghz
EVGA GTX 670(standard, not overclocked) driver version 301.42 WHQL(got bsods before updating as well)
8gb DDR3 ram
64gb m4 ssd
1tb data hdd
520w corsair PSU

I upgraded from an ati 5850 and I ran driver sweeper before installing the 670. I decided to just do a fresh install of windows and played some Crysis 2 with the hd textures and dx11 mod. The temps hovered around the low to mid 70s for around 30-45 minutes of gameplay before I got another BSOD. Could the PSU be underpowered? I am willing to purchase a new one if it would help, I just don't want to order before I pinpoint the issue.
You know they did a recall on the EVGA 670s? You get a free upgrade to the FTW edition when you exchange it.

Ah, finally! The shop I ordered from said they should be receiving a shipment of GTX 670 DCII TOP's early next week, looking forward to it. Not worried about the whole 600 -series v-sync stuttering issue since I rarely use it anyway.

Did nVidia released the 300 driver for the 500 series too?
It's just popped-up a balloon from the tray saying that there is a new driver updated, the 301.49.
I had understood that they were just for the 600 series.

The 300 series have been available for the 5xx cards for quite a while now.

Can even go check the Nvidia site, pick your card series and they'll list all the drivers available for your card.

It seemed strange to me that they were cutting support for "older" VGA...
Well, that's a good thing! Finally FXAA from driver for games without AA and adaptive v-sync.
Are they ok? I mean, any known problem...? I'm still with the 295.73.

No one has reported any problems on OCN, and from my testing on old 9600m and MW3, A-VS works great.

He bought the regular edition so he can't get the FTW edition. I just realized that he overclocked his CPU, maybe that's whats causing his issue.

Just got my Asus 670 Top version, damn thing is sexy and glad I canceled the 680. Triple slot would've killed my chance of SLI in the future. What a pain it was to put in the power connectors because I had to bend the 2pin. Whoever designed it side by side needs a slap.

Just how quiet are the Windforces supposed to be? I'm getting a semi-loud hum at 25% and 36C? I read they were meant to be sildent idle but it's clearly audible through the case. It's not loud enough to bother me while gaming or music, but compared the the complete silence I was used to, it's really quite annoying.

Oh boy, my system crashed during 3DMark and now my display won't even show up. Onboard works, the Asus mobo had a red light where the pci-e slot is that blinked and went away. Anyone ever had this issue? Asus p8z68, hope my pci-e slot isn't dead. Going to try and update BIOS and see if it fixes it.

I've never been one for super accurate colors and all that business. Smooth animation/movement, 80+ FPS with no frame tearing, and low input lag is much more important to me. Totally subjective though. What isn't subjective is that all three things I listed are awesome.

What 120hz monitor do you have? The S23/S27 Samsungs and BenQ XL2420T have really really nice screens. I swear they almost look more vibrant than my transformer prime's screen.

I disagree. The colors on the XL2420T are pretty bad. I have 3 of them (well, one XL2420TX but that's the same thing with an IR emitter)...so I don't think it's bad luck. :-P

I've searched for calibration stuff and tried a few settings...still looks washed out. Performs awesome in games and I'm like you - would rather have fluidity and response...but let's not kid ourselves, ok? :)

can't do any sound testing because they're doing construction outside (putting my new 500/500 mbit fiber cables in the ground baby ^^ )

but at idle (25%) my two cards are more silent than the three 900 rpm Noiseblocker 120 fans I have. Or in other words, completely silent.

have you checked there are no cables hitting them, and that all three fans spin smoothly ?

I use Contrast 50, Gamma 4, Brightness 20, [R 96 G 97 B 100], with an additional +10% digital vibrance in Nvidia control panel for some more popping colors. Don't use the "Black eQualizer" for desktop work obviously ;)

pretty good for a TN screen but as you say it's still rather bright for desktop use. Don't really notice that in games though, although for competitive shooters I use the BF3 preset from the BenQ site which makes the blacks a lot lighter (and people hiding in the shadows a lot more visible hehe)

I managed to determine that it's the first fan on the board making all the noise, while the other two are pretty much silent. I don't think it's spinning any faster than the others and there are no obstructions that I can see. Any ideas?

I'm gonna see what gigabyte say before rma'ing it.

Thanks! I will try those settings. My third try to find ones I like. :) EDIT: hmm...gamma is grayed out in my XL2420TX menu...is that normal?

How do you get the BenQ loader thing to work? It says it's only compatible with like 6 different graphics cards and it won't install on my 680 system. Did you do something manually? All I play (for the most part) is BF3 so I'd love to get my panels tuned to it!

I did that on my GTX480... Haven't checked with the new cards yet

Gamma should be available if you're in regular desktop mode AFAIK?.. I'll check tonight.. Or I just tell you the BF3 settings of course ;-)

anyone seen the asus 670 top available from amazon themselves yet? i would love to secure one... gotta get the most out of my Prime :)

Is supply ever going to catch up? I have never seen shortages of new cards be as persistent as with the nvidia 6XX series :/

Anyone know a site that does internatinonal delivery? Not even amazon is shipping those cards to Brazil :(

I'll be importing an ASUS GTX 670 DCU2 TOP from Bottom Line Telecommunications at some point. In my experience, it's impossible to find a store that both ships internationally for a reasonable price and offers products at RRP (Frys, for instance, is good for the latter, but charges $110 to ship to Australia).

Edit: BLT's premium on products (GPUs, anyway) seems to be about $13, which is hardly bad, and shipping costs are among the best I've come across (~$55 to Australia for one GPU; ~$65 for two -- and these refer to the express option, so it's possible to save a few bucks if you don't mind waiting).

Well, turns out the card was doa. Going to get a refund from Superbiiz and just reordered the card from Newegg. Screwed around trying to fix it and now my motherboard is dead too, getting an RMA from Asus on it.

Fairly sure that pci-e LED on my p8z68 does that every time I boot mine up. I certainly see it fairly regularly.

Edit: Just checked, yep - it's a boot up thing for me.

Still over MSRP, but I'd get it now. Unfortunately I can't until Friday, hopefully I can find stock

Like I said, I think the MSRP is actually $429.99. That is what Newegg has it for, and that is what Amazon is going to be selling it for.

If Amazon doesn't have it up by Friday and Newegg still does I'll just grab it from them, but I'd prefer to get my triple card points :p

lol, had you told me that sooner I would've tried the card on my 2nd comp instead of fiddling with the motherboard :( . Now its really dead though, can't even get past post screen. Didn't think the card was doa and was a bit lazy to remove my other comp's videocard.

sounds like something is wrong. At full load the Gigabyte fan hits 40% and only 39.4dBa.

edit: ahh just read this. yea let us know how gigabyte handles it. would be good to hear about their customer service

Cool...thanks man! BTW - your updated settings (sans Gamma, of course) work great. Thanks for those. Did a few rounds of BF3 last night. :)

OK BF3 profile is

[brightness 100] [Contrast 50] [Sharpness 5] [Black eQualizer 16] [AMA on] [Instant Mode on]

Dynamic Contrast under advanced is off, everything else is greyed out...

I do notice some weird behavior now :/ e.g. when I set colors back to normal from the custom 96/97/100 my entire screen is freakin GREEN wtf lol. I've never played with the settings after I got it... just loaded up those earlier mentioned ones for regular gaming & desktop use + the bf3 profile for competitive shooters and set those to button 1 and 3 on the "remote"

so I think the profile loaders change some stuff beyond the regular stuff you adjust on the screen? I think I'm going to factory reset it tomorrow to make sure everything is still OK lol, no time now unfortunately

Been waiting for Newegg to get the Gigabyte 670 in...are the other versions just as good? I see people seem to like the $430 ASUS model. What's the difference in the two ASUS models if i'll likely OC myself anyways?

I have a Gigabyte GTX 460 now which i'm planning on leaving in as a dedicated PhysX card. Any compatibility issues if I mix manufacturers?

The GB and the Asus TOP versions are both good. I might have gone with the GB if it was in stock to save $30, but the Asus TOP gets consistently higher OCs. Everyone who has attempted to OC theirs over at OCN and [H] has gotten >1280mhz, while the GB gets around 1130 iirc. The TOP models are binned so you have guaranteed high clocks, while the GB cards are highly variable.

Works for me. Just bought the ASUS 670 TOP model from Newegg.

Can anyone give some impressions on the EVGA 670 FTW fan noise? It looks like it's not quite a reference design due to the plastic cover's shape, but it's hard to tell. I'm looking to replace my 460 1GB SLI setup with a single card, and I'm getting tired of waiting for the ASUS 670 TOP to come back into stock and might jump on a FTW, so was just wondering if anyone had one and their opinions. Thanks guys.

Does anyone know if a single one of those asus directcu cards will raise my cpu temps? I have the two case fans that came with my define R3 and a hyper 212 on a 3570K that I'm already pushing to about 70C with overclocking.

Thanks.

Do you have the R3 fans in the stock configuration? If so, move the front fan to the side., or get another fan to put there. It will significantly lower temps. The front fan has to grasp for air, and having one on the side will dump cool air directly onto the GPU and CPU heatsink.
