Well...with everything completely set to Ultra (including max MSAA and FXAA) I get about 45fps in BF3 SP using 3D. I get up to 60fps as well, but I tend to average in the 45-50 range.

So if you wanted to do a 3D Surround setup with 3x 120hz monitors...3 680s could maybe come close...4 should do anything you ask lol. I'm assuming you don't adjust any settings and go strictly off of the Ultra preset.

Is it a huge issue for most gamers? Doesn't seem like it, no.
 
i figure this thread id the right place to ask. is 3 monitor gaming really worth it? do you actively use all 3 screens? is it more immersive? what about all that heat radiating toward you?

For shooters and racing games especially, it's freaking amazing. Hell, it's amazing for everything. Way more immersive and you see so much more (as long as you get over the bezels separating the screens). Basically the field of view widens out so you can see across all 3 screens. It's more natural for human vision because you see the entire FoV spread out rather than centralized in one place (where you just focus on one screen).

It's just expensive as fuck and requires more space, electricity, and GPU power to push that resolution. But yeah it's awesome.
 
I need a new screen setup to go with gk110. I'm considering a tri monitor setup, but if I could get a 1080p 120hz HMZ headset, I'd be interested in that. Not sure if I can handle the bezels separating the screen though.
 
Probably not crazy expensive with monitor prices as low as they are these days. Sure you could do $200 per monitor.

My brother just PC games (yes, at his computer desk) on a 52" Samsung HDTV. That's one way to tackle it I guess.

He did inform me that split screen setups look much better though. He even noticed my 27" monitor looks much sharper than his giant Samsung.
 
I still need to figure out how I really feel about 3D. On my plasma I choose 1080p60 2D over 720p60 3D every time. I'm certainly not investing in another display that has that limitation.

Ha! I have one 120hz monitor. No point in getting more now since I can't max out BF3 at 5760x1080 on 3x60hz monitors. :( Has to be a driver issue. But I am still getting quad SLI if I can get that MSI board.

Sketch is the fat rich kid on the block who got a jetski for his birthday instead of a bicycle. :( To be honest though, if I had the money/shit was free, I'd rock GTX 680's in SLI. I'd love to have the ability to play with hardware like that like it ain't no thang.

Working on it. Have one installed, ran some tests and some benches and so far so good. In Unigine with one card I got around a 18fps increase over the 580 Classy. Going to install the 2nd card right now and then do some SLI testing. Took a little longer removing and cleaning than I thought I would...I also had to install the backplates on the new cards and that took a little time as well.

Will try to get you some BF3 feedback tonight..no promises, but will try.
 
Theres something about these shiny new computer parts and having the next "big" thing. That and running any game on max with +60fps. Sooner or later I have to build a computer so I can stop this itch. It keeps coming back year after year >.>
 
Speaking of 3-monitor setups for gaming, is it crucial that they all be identical models? I currently have 2x 1200p 24" monitors, they are professional grade 30-bit RGB LED IPS panels, targeted for video and photo editing and graphic design, so not exactly ideal for gaming. They normally go for €1500 a pop or thereabouts but I got them for super cheap in a stroke of luck and I can't get a 3rd one.

So would it be a bad idea to buy a different 3rd monitor, put it in the middle and use the twin as side monitors? I'm thinking that getting the image calibration to look identical or close on all three might be a bitch. Also mixing IPS with TN might cause other issues. Any thoughts?

On another note, are there any practical gaming uses for a dual monitor setup? I can't think of any other than perhaps having the hud/inventory/menus occupy the 2nd screen (don't know if any games support that), and I can't imagine extending the field of view in one side but not the other would feel natural at all, and having the bezel in the center is almost unthinkable.
 
Just shot an email off to KFA2 regarding the 4GB White PCB Hall of Fame cards, hopefully they will bring them to Europe in the same timeframe as the Galaxy release.

I got GTX 470 right now which is generally fine with exception of Witcher 2, Hard Reset, Metro 2033 and slightly Deus Ex3.

I can get 130-140 euro back selling it
Now i could get cheap Palit GTX570 or reference Radeon 7850 for 220-230 euro but would this really be noticable upgrade ?

Or 7870 for 300 euro

but actually i wonder maybe i should wait for GTX 670 /670 ti release and then rather go to 7950 or 670ti or maybe even if price gouging stops GTX 680....

Smokey...sorry I did not get a BF3 run done yet. I was testing a bunch of other stuff and doing some slight OC on the cards to see what I can get out of them first. Will still do it, but not till tonight.

Man these cards are pretty silent compared to my 580 Classy's. Even at normal use, I can barely hear them. It is not till they hit around 60% fan speed that I can hear a rise in noise, but no where near my classys or my original 580's.

For those that OC...the 680's bring a whole new way of doing it and while some may like it due to simplicity, others may not. And like usual, especially with reference cards, the GPU you get may not be the same as someone elses. Case in point, someone at evga has 2 in SLI like I do and he is able to get around 10fps higher than me because on his cards he is able to push the offset a bit higher than I can on mine...it is all luck of the draw until you get specialty GPU's which are binned.

But regardless, even without an OC, they are fantastic.

And as a side note..and I know that not everyone cares..but my barometer has always been Witcher 2 in Ubersampling at 1080p and everything maxed out...on my original 580's in SLI my best was around 20-25fps....with my Classy's my best was a 28-40fps...with the 680's I am between 45-60fps, with an average close to around 55fps or so in the scenes i tried. So, even with the might 680's in Ubermode, still cannot achieve rock solid 60fps in Witcher 2....whatcha think a 3rd card???

Lastly, since these are new cards, there is an issue with SLI and Witcher 2 in Uber...you get some nasty texture flickering...it is not on all textures, but a few, but very noticeable. I tried it without Uber and there is no flickering, so there is something going crazy when Uber mode is engaged.

of course I'll wait until the inevitable GTX 670 to jump in (one notch below the high end=best deal IMHO) but these scores are killer. KILLER I SAY!

So I brought this up to my friend the other day, and I would like to get Hardware-GAF's opinion as well.

With GPUs hitting 2GB+ of VRAM standard, isn't it about time where we're going to see developers having to finally go 64-bit with their games? I mean, if a game is using 2GB (too much?) system RAM, and then you've got games running at 2K/4K/"Retina" resolutions taking up another 2GB of RAM, won't we have to see games go 64-bit?

Honest question, and I would love for somebody knowledgable to give an answer.

When more then a handful of developers care about utilizing such hardware, maybe. Very few devs have the following to recoup the cost of such a graphically intense game released on such a finicky platform.

Great impressions man. And no biggie on BF3, no rush. Just curious as to how they play out since we essentially have the same hardware (well yours is superior now).
 
Wow the EVGA model is currently available from newegg for 509. And I was actually able to put it in my cart.

First time I've been able to put a 680 in my cart at newegg, ever. Usually even when they say in stock it gives a OOS error when placing in cart.

Not going to buy it mind you. But yeah, the EVGA is up right this second. Maybe stock is easing a bit.

haha never mind it's literally back on auto notify when i refreshed...

Also seeing the HIS 7970 at 529 and the HIS 7950 at 429, so there's a little movement on the AMD front.
