Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

I want a 970 now. I'm sad I'll need a whole new cpu+mobo+ddr3 ram first, my phenom II is too old to make a new gpu worth it

The 970 is the only high end card that matters, honestly.

If you were shopping from anywhere between $250-$500 then the 970 is the only choice. Finally, a high end card at a mainstream price point that I can recommend without qualification.

My 560 Ti 448 has a worthy successor.
Yup!
Today was a good day for pc gamers and anyone who needs an upgrade, some balance in the hardware pricing universe has been restored (though prices are still inflated compared to 2009-2011)

Would a 970 work fine on an Antec 550w PSU?
Yes, it would work on a 350w psu too
It consumes 40 watts less power than a gtx 260 and people ran that gpu on 350watt power supplies back in the day.

Given the drivers just dropped and how much info leaked ahead of time I'd say tomorrow sounds like a good bet. Possibly even midnight.

Fuck man. The upgrade from a 570 to a 970 is so incredibly appealing... I need to find a way to get some extra cash to spare.

Btw I mentioned this in the other thread, and it just gets lost in the news and excitement for maxwell, but what do you guys think about the gtx680 apparently having sold 10 million units? That is an insane amount. Just one gpu ? That '55 million high end pc owners' number I saw mentioned in other threads before is really true then.

That is just outpacing the everliving shit out of the console market.

Tempted to make a thread about the 10 million number

I've been looking at upgrading from my 3 year old 560Ti and was considering a stopgap in the R9 series since I still game on a single screen 1080p, but for an extra $100+ that 970 seems like a card I can roll with for another 4 years or so. While does all the cool stuff come out when I am trying to buy a house?

Would my Seasonic 550 watts gold PSU be able to handle SLI 970s + a stock clocked 4670k :/ ? I never considered SLI before building my rig but with the VR tech announced I think I made a big mistake, VR was the whole point of my rig...

SLI 970s will run on that. The power consumption of these things is incredibly low.

Thanks, I haven't been keeping up on the PC scene since I bought my 2500K GTX570 system a few years ago.

The 970 looks like a nice cheapish upgrade from a 570 assuming the CPU won't be a huge bottleneck?

I wouldn't go that far, 970's still eat 274 watts under load.

Here is Guru3D's power supply recommendation:

GeForce GTX 970 or 980 - On your average system the card requires you to have a 500 Watt power supply unit.
GeForce GTX 970 or 980 in 2-way SLI - On your average system the cards require you to have an 800 Watt power supply unit as minimum.

To those concerned about the amount of memory these cards will ship with take a look at Anandtech's architecture article page 3

These cards are using some memory compression advances compared to previous generation cards:

Maybe this is enough to allow for better textures within the same memory footprint.

I think I'm doing it. That 980 will be mine. The 970 looks amazing too tho. I'm going from sli 570. Want a big jump. What manufacturer should I go with. Got twin frozr at minute and been really happy with those

What I need to know is if the compression results in any losses, any image comparisons so far?

Well shit. First time in ages I'm frothing to replace my 460, that price is insanely good. Even importing to Australia I'd expect it to run AUD$400 at most.

Should be a damn huge step up from a 460 to the 970!!!

They're deliberately over estimating the power requirements there. There's no way a decent 600w PSU will even break sweat with SLI 970s.

What about a 500w? I'd rather spend the money on 2 970s, but needing a new PSU woukd probably steer me toward a single 980 instead.

I've only owned a 660 ti, and the idle temp for the asus 970 is pretty off-putting to me. Like it's the one thing that's making me consider EVGA's version instead. The EVGA doesn't seem to be that much louder in idle or load compared to my 660 ti either. Am I just being too cautious or is this not as big a deal as I'm making it out to be?

I didn't see any such comparison in the article.

It also doesn't state if compression will be optional, it might be something built into the GPU so we won't know the difference unless comparing image quality to different GPU architecture.

SLI 970s? Don't mind if I do. Getting my eVGA supernova g2 750w delivered tomorrow, and guru3d had me worried for a second, but I'm going to assume I'll be fine.

You still need to run whatever CPU you have, and if you are running SLI that likely means a unlocked CPU so you can overclock. Plus people that run SLI also tend to OC the GPU's, so why even fuck around with low watts?

Selling my R9 290 for a 970, gonna SLI it later.

The latency and SLI performance benchmarks for these cards are very impressive.

EDIT: Do we know when we'll be able to buy these?

Ehh, I just bought a 770 last year. I can hold out for now as I did a full upgrade this year with Devil's Canyon.

If you're primarily gaming at 1080p, is the 980 only an incremental upgrade over the 970?

The 980 is an incremental jump over the the 970 full stop. If it had the same price:performance as the 970 it would be around $400. You're paying a large premium for the prestige of owning the fastest single GPU on the market.

in the guru bench sli would be like 440w and they even use a Intel Core i7-3960X Extreme oced to 4,6ghz, but dont forget drives , extra cooler , led and stuff
