Damn… things are getting nasty.
PC gaming could return to niche status at some point, if the situation worsens.

Graphics are just gonna stagnate and devs will target 8GB video cards for a long time. Fine with me tbh.

This will obviously affect console prices too. Sony isn't gonna outbid the data centers and subsidize the hardware too.

Eh I don't know about that but this will definitely hurt it getting more mainstream.

That being said PC gaming was better when it wasn't so mainstream.
Realistically it would take a lot, but things like rare earths and such are now a geopolitical tool for strategic trade or denial. I think the issue is compounding.

Yeah, it's looking like COVID GPU pricing part 2.

What's funny is everybody going off on the projected Steam Machine pricing. At the rate everything might be going a $699 Steam Machine might look like a steal in early 2026. I'm "looking forward" to seeing the next Xbox increase. Sony looks to have hoarded enough to keep PS5 pricing stable.

Just signals that next year ain't gonna be great for any hardware that needs fast memory.

If Nvidia is leaving their partners to fend for themselves, we're gonna see other companies also have to bid more to challenge AI data centers, and costs will rise.

Hopefully Sony's stock lasts a while, Microsoft and Nintendo likely will raise prices next year.

This goes beyond just merely PC gaming. Anything that uses memory is going to be affected. PC RAM and GPUs sure, but also phones, consoles, TVs, basically any smart device that uses memory… which is all of them.

We will start seeing price increases as soon as current contracts and supply runs out. 2026 is going to suck for prices.

We probably wont see things get decent until Trump is out of office. It's probably going to be expensive as shit in the next two years.

Real talk, do we think this pricing issue delays next gen?
Do you mean the 60-series and rdna 5? Probably, yeah. Since the super refresh already seems to be delayed or cancelled.

If you mean the next consoles, Probably not. They're just gonna be more expensive, for sure. The next Xbox PC-thing was always gonna be expensive, bur I think the console crowd is up for a cruel reality-check with the next Playstation.

If Sony hasn't locked in some big contracts for GDDR7, yeah probably
Now the question is would Sony have locked down a contract for 2027 production in 2025 already? Or how far they have a contract and/or stock for current consoles with GDDR6.

They could maybe ride this out, or be screwed half way through 2026. Same goes for Nintendo and Microsoft as well. But at least Nintendo doesn't have to worry about an upcoming console launch.
I'll let Sony worry about that lol. I aint paying above 500 for a console
And I won't pay these excessive RAM prices either.

The source is some random loli girl from a website called Weibo.com btw.

Weibo.com is a major Chinese microblogging platform that combines features of Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, allowing users to post text, images, and videos. It is one of the most popular social media sites in China, used by individuals, celebrities, media organizations, and businesses for sharing news, creating content, and engaging with others.
I dunno. This shit is way above my paygrade.

This may not be true – add plenty of skepticism with any rumor, naturally – but it does make some sense, and it would be very bad news for some graphics card makers if it is genuinely what Nvidia's planning, as I'll discuss next.

This deal is getting worse all the time
Surely these global shortages can't continue? First Crypto, then Covid, now AI, what next...

Does this mean the partners get to decide how much memory to use? Because it would be nice to have more options there (beyond the shortage aspect).

Things are about to get weird. Check on your cooling setups boys. Consider a careful re-paste for the coming winter.

There is at a good thing that will come for this.
Game devs will be forced to optimize their games and start targeting older GPUs if they want to have any sales at all.
Like they did in the "old days".
Even better maybe we will see the return of custom game engines instead of more unreal 5 slops. :messenger_smirking:

Nvidia reportedly no longer supplying VRAM to its GPU board partners in response to memory crunch — rumor claims vendors will only get the die, forced to source memory on their own

Nvidia typically bundles the GPU and VRAM together.

They'll just tell you to turn the settings down.
