Nvidia Shield Thread

Yup, confirmed, neutered SD card support:
https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/715378/general-discussion/shield-and-kitkat/

Install games to SD still works (although it's been buggy on my end, and the two largest games I have, GTA VC and San Andreas, don't support it). Some apps may need to be updated if they haven't already.

But file managers are dead in the water with this update. I too have been transferring files wireless via ftp using Solid Explorer, and this negates that. I currently have my shield rooted right now, so I'm hoping there'll be a workaround for proper SD support.

Yeah hopefully there is a way to enable SD card access with a rooted shield.

So, I've had a gaming PC with a GTX 770 in it for a few months now, and was thinking of getting a Shield. Should I wait for the revision, or is the 200 dollar one the one I want? I don't want to use it for anything but streaming games from my PC to my unit while i'm in bed.

I don't see how streaming can change much on an hypothetical hardware refresh. Perhaps a Wifi-AC enabled Shield?

Figured I post this, but Rayman Fiesta Run now has native controller support. I'm not sure when they added it, but it's a pleasant surprise. It was an easy game to map for controller support, but this is a nice touch.

Android is getting the Open Beta of Phantasy Star Online 2es in early April. Will be in Japanese, but I hear a English patch will be worked on for it.

Yup I've been playing it the past couple of days and it's FANTASTIC.

I've wanted an Android device for emulation for quite some time. And now that I'm decide to order : "Available in US and Canada only"

Europe : LOL

:(

Just use MyUS (www.myus.com), Borderlinx or other mail forwarding system and get a Shield from Amazon and ship to to the US address they'll give you(and then they'll ship it to you).

Shield is amazing, Nvidia is stupid to not sell it worldwide.

more questions on Kainy
- did anyone managed get Kainy to work/auto boot Big Picture mode?
- anyone getting input lag with Kainy + Sixaxis?

My Nvidia Shield has the worst battery life I've ever experienced. My screen on time is 28 minutes, and the battery life is down to 32%. I last charged only about 24 hours ago.

60% of the battery says it is NVIDIA SHIELD Services (no idea what that is, but it seems that it's been on the ENTIRE time since my battery was charged), 21% is Mediaserver (no idea what that is), and 7% is screen, then 6% Wi-Fi, 5% Android System, and 2% Android OS.

I have location access disabled, and I have it set to where WiFi is turned off when the device is asleep.

WHAT IN THE WORLD IS HAPPENING.

Try a soft reset. I had the same problem but with an App that was keeping the Shield always awake. My device has been fine since.

Sometimes there will be an app that will keep the CPU running at full tilt. Easiest way to find out if this is happening is to put your ear near the exhaust vent and listen if the cpu fan is running. It should stop running a minute or two after you put it to sleep. If it doesn't, close out apps and/or restart the shield.

I think the soft reset worked too well. In the past few hours since I posted, the battery life has went UP 10%. Not on the charger or anything. What in the world?!

Was doing done research on this and I'm interested. Only problem is I don't have a dual band router, does that make the streaming part useless?

You won't get 60fps streaming without a (good) dual band. Otherwise you're limited to 30fps which is playable depending of games.

The part where it would show the time and battery life at the top of the screen isn't there anymore. Anyone know how to remake it reappear? It's the black bar. Thanks.

Settings>Display> Full screen mode.

Make sure its unclicked.

That should work unless its a bug or something.

Edit: it's also available in the quick settings menu if you swipe down from the top of the right side of the screen.

Edit: There is a fix

https://play.google.com/store/apps/...d&utm_medium=WidgetWeb&utm_campaign=Playboard

Needless to say, it'll be the first thing I'll install after installing the update and rerooting.

*Breathes a sigh of relief* I'm still using foldermount as I couldn't be bothered moving 30GB+ of apps and games around. This update most likely would have stopped that dead, even rooted. Hopefully SDFix will sort that out. Though to be honest I should just suck it up and reinstall everything properly.

EDIT*

just found this on XDA-devs
When starting folder mount last night it gave an error about SD card permission and offered to patch it, it patched and everything works like it did pre 4.4

Clever foldermount!

So it looks like foldermount will do the same job as SDFix.

As a Brit who would have to purchase this from abroad, am I best off waiting for any new announcements, or just taking the dip? I hear it's getting KitKat. Would places like eBay be the best bet? I saw it on play-asia but I imagine there'll be a hefty shipping fee attached.

Got my Shield today. It spent a while upgrading (it was a bunch of revisions behind; the previous owner only used it once and put it back in the box. His loss..). I had a chance to try streaming from my PC and I also tried out the Grid beta.

Streaming took forever to get going. Part of it was the old software on the Shield, but even after updating, I still had to physically be at the PC to accept the connection, and I had to tab back from Steam to the game to get it to show up in the stream. Once streaming was actually working, though, it worked great. 60fps pretty much all the time in my game of choice (Borderlands 2), and the controller is nice.

I'm actually even more impressed by Grid. I happen to have a high speed connection close enough to Nvidia's data center (~20ms ping) that playing games streamed is effectively indistinguishable from streaming them locally. I played a few minutes of Dead Rising - it played no differently than if I was playing it on my PC, and it never dropped a frame or had control issues.

Not a bad little device. Maybe it will have better success at $200 than it did at the original price.

I think the thing i enjoy the most is the IPS screen. I don't get any flashlighting on this display and when I compare it to my TV it blows it out of the park in colors and color accuracy.

Are there any decent action RPGs that are Shield optimized? The big ones in the Tegra Zone are all ultra-IAP heavy F2P games, supposedly to the point where it sacrifices the core experience for the quick money grab.

(Not that I mind spending money or playing F2P games - I just don't want the game keeping my wallet pried open perpetually just to use things like healing potions or other things that are supposed to be a core part of the ARPG experience.)

Andy I have a couple of questions if you have the time.

When is the shield officially available in Europe?

Is there plans for a revision on the model soon?

I am using a single band router but use a wifi extender that is dual band hardwired to the router, will this work as effectively as a dual band router or will that add lag?

Anyway I appreciate if you could answer.

Think I'm going to order one to replace my Ouya as an emulator box. Anyone know what kind of controllers it supports when hooked up to a television?

I haven't found any IAP in Mount and Blade: Warband. However, I haven't played that game much.

Any BT or USB controller supported by android should work. Even Ouya's controller.

GeForce 337.50 Beta Driver
GeForce Experience 2.0
SHIELD Software Update 72

All released. Info here. This is all the big new features, streaming from some mobile cards, Kit Kat, remote wake, proper BT keyboard and mouse support and Gamepad Mapper improvements. Getting my install on now.

New TegraZone is really good. Seems much more organized and useful.

Already knew game streaming worked well on my desktop PC, but tested up on my laptop's 770M and it ran smooth (and very hot). The options in the Advanced steaming quality sections are max bitrate (anywhere from 4 to 20Mbps or Auto) and FPS (30 or 60). Haven't tested much yet. MGR and Titanfall work perfectly as far as I can tell. The in-game graphics settings may drop, I can run Titanfall at 1080p on High at 60fps, but when I streamed it to set itself to 720p on Low. Put it back up to High and there was some stuttering but overall it was okay. Playing at 30fps everything with razor sharp on a non-dual band router.

Hey guys could anyone tell me if binding of isaac will be able to be streamed to this and does anyone know where to get one in the UK? Cheers

Cant wait to try this, can someone post impressions of the new bitrate settings, hopefully no more "blocky" compression.

Played around a bit, and I could get 30fps with crisp sharp everything, or 60fps with everything not quite as sharp. Not blocky or anything though, I couldn't see any artifacts. Run smooth with only a little bit of lag for the first ten seconds or so.

Better than Wii U gamepad now as far as I can see.

how does it work with steam? can i access my pc in a different house and play steam games?

If it's a Steam game supported by GeForce Experience there's instant support for it on SHIELD. Today's update added an easier way for folks to manually add unsupported games, and there's also an easy way to RDP to your system if you need to do that to launch the game.

http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/articles/gtc-2014-nvidia-shield-software-update-announcement goes over the update, and http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/guides/nvidia-shield-user-guide#3 covers the adding of Steam games.

Hey guys,
Is the Shadowplay/Twitch streaming limited to certain games? I would love to do an Knights of the Old Republic live stream. Im just not sure if im limited to only modern games. Does anyone know.

Got mine today, pretty awesome. I'm assuming everyone has a clicky dpad when it's pressed up (based on some searches).

Anyone recommend any games to try out?

I can't believe how well Dreamcast runs on this. 60fps all the way from what I've played so far (Soul Calibur, Powerstone, Crazy Taxi, Project Justice). And some games actually look better compared to my TV.

With sound? And what kind of games do you like?

The Walking Dead is finally out in the regular Play store (it was out for Kindle exclusively before). And the cool news is that it's Tegra enhanced, and has the "Plays great on NVIDIA SHIELD" slogan on the store page meaning it has native controls. The first chapter is free, with IAP to unlock the rest.

Still downloading now, will report when I know how it plays.

Got my Shield last night...kinda annoyed since I'm pretty sure jackass at GameStop took it home and used it -_-

Pretty impressed with it so far. The only bummer I guess is that to get 1080p/60fps, I would need my TV close to the router :(
