Nvidia Shield Thread

How the hell do I add a game manually to Gamestream? I try to go into my Geforce Experience application and everything online says to go to Preferences > Gamestream. Problem is, I don't have that option. All I have is the option to add game folder locations. I want to add Dolphin to it, but I can't find a way to add the .exe.

EDIT: Had to reinstall Geforce Experience.

Anyone know if you can use the PC 360 controller with shield while it is in console mode?

Yes. Use a micro USB to USB adapter with a wired 360 controller and it's basically a full console. Works with almost all games and emulators that support gamepad. Many of them even have specific 360 controller profiles, which is great.

If you have a keyboard that doesn't draw too much power that has its own separate USB port you can have a K+M setup too.

Since I moved back to nvidia video cards today by buying a GTX980, I picked up a Shield as well. I've used in-home streaming through third party programs like splashtop, but I've been interested in seeing how Nvidia's commercial solution performs. I know I could stream to any android device, but I've been eyeing the shield for a long while now.

I can go pick it up tomorrow at fry's, I'm interested in seeing how it performs.

Got my replacement today and it has exactly the same problem so im afraid its the end of the line for me and the shield. Damn shame.

Anyone here have experience using ethernet with their shield? I'm going to give it a go tomorrow to see if I can improve stream quality/performance.

I'm able to do 1080p60 easily while wired. I've got a y-cable for wired and charging while in console mode, along with the Shield controller. Works wonderfully.

Have to continue my Shield love. Discovered PS4 remote play while on vacation. Fed up with the crappy controls on the Vita, playing my remote PS4 with the Shield Portable is awesome.

Excellent -- that's really good to hear!

Maaan, I need to try that!

Just got my shield portable from frys. Does anyone have any tips for new users? I've never used a droid device before so I'm wondering if there are any tricks I should be aware of.

Any suggestions for emulators as well?

To remote play PS4 on the Shield Portable this is what I did:

1. Update Shield Portable to Android 4.4.2
2. Install the Playstation App from the Google Play store
3. Download the beta 4 version on the remote play fix from this thread
4. Run that APK file from your downloads to install it
5. Open the new Remote Play app
6. Skip any controller pairing and click next to start it looking for the PS4
7. Sign in once to your PSN account then skip the search
8. Pair the device with your PS4 by going to the add device under remote play settings on the PS4 (ensure the connect directly is turned off while your at those menus)
9. Enter the number on the Shield and it should connect
10. IMPORTANT: Hold start until the controller mapping comes up. Remove any button mappings
11. FOR FULL 720p RESOLUTION: Before connecting to the PS4, hit the settings dots in the upper right. Change the video quality to high. This will only work if you have a very strong connection. It works great for me when I'm only a couple feet from my 5ghz wireless router. Any walls in between and the connection breaks up.

And that's all! You don't need to be rooted, just go through the steps and it should work with full controller support. Even R3 and L3 work as they should with games like CoD or Battlefield. To use the PS button touch the screen and hit the little bars at the bottom.

Wow - thanks a lot!! Was just about to Google it. Lol

Edit: Worked pretty much flawlessly. Only a little bit of latency, and no graphical artifacts or stuttering noticed.

So I'm not sure if the version of the remote play app I have is different from the one you are linking to, but when you say L3/R3 work, does that mean I DON'T have to have the left stick centered in order to sprint? That's the hang up I'm having now. The streaming works great, but I have to have the left stick centered in order for the L3 button press to register.

I'm streaming games to my Shield portable from my PC using Gamestream, and it works pretty good, better than I thought it would, but approximately every minute, the picture and audio stutters for a few seconds, then goes back to being fine. Normally, I would chalk it up to my network not being good enough (router transmits at 2.4GHz only), but because it's seems to spike pretty consistently, and I experienced lag spikes on my Windows 8.1 computer initially as well, I'm wondering if it's something wrong with my computer and not just my network not being up to snuff.

Does anyone here have any suggestions on how I might fix the stuttering? I'll provide more information if needed. I have the latest drivers for my GTX 760 card and GeForce Experience.

One thing of note is that I seemed to fix my initial lag spikes with my Windows 8.1 computer by going into my Killer e2200 Gigabit Ethernet Controller properties and disabling "Interrupt Moderation" (a Youtube video said to try this for 8.1 lag spikes).

Gonna try this out with shield tablet / ipega on lollipop later.

The shield, as a stand alone handheld, is pretty damn sweet. While I'm waiting for my 980 to come in, I've been using it as a pure android handheld. I have had stuff like the JXB chinese android handhelds before, and this blows them away. The shield is so beefy and solid, I like it's design a lot.

Throwing XBMC on the thing is awesome, the screen make it feel like one of those portable DVD players from the mid 2000s.

Anybody know what jitter is? It's below recommended in the network test, but it's close. Also, does anyone know why the test doesn't give a more exact reading for bitrate? I think mine said >24.4 or some such.

Edit: While I'm asking questions(lol), will I see a difference using cat5e vs cat6?

I'm looking for a tablet to replace my old iPad that I sold. Is the Nvidia Shield tablet a good choice? I'd primarily be using it to stream from my desktop and reading ebooks.

Never looked into this thing before, but someone here just told me that it's possible to stream from your PS4 which sounds awesome to me. I'm just curious, having looked at some videos, if there is a way to turn off the on screen buttons? Also, what setup should I be looking for, controller wise to go with the tablet?

I'm running version 1.0 of the playstation app.

I have the latest KitKat installed, version 4.4.2.

Make sure that you hold down start on the shield once you're streaming and delete any buttons that are touch assigned. (Although you'd be complaining about the touch buttons appearing if this is what was effecting you)

I also have a VERY clean setup on my device since I only use it for PS4 remote streaming, PC streaming, RetroArch emulation and a handful of Android games like Half Life 2. I have no hacks implemented. I have no controller software installed.

When I upgraded the OS, it went from being a nippy little machine to slow as molasses, however a factory reset rectified it.

My new Nvidia card just arrived in the mail. The Shield is a pretty tempting additional purchase now, as I would get a lot more gaming done with it than sitting at my desktop.

I've heard great things about the Shield experience. Can someone compare it to streaming to a tablet with something like Splashtop 2?

I've had one for a few weeks now and I'm still trying to get the best possible Kainy/Splashtop connection for a seamless experience. It's been pretty hit or miss (mostly miss) so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My computer with Steam is wireless, but download speeds are 40 MB/S+, with a respectable upload speed. Would making it a hardwired ethernet connection really help all that much?

I also have a rooted Ouya that I want to use for Steam mirroring as well, and have similar questions. What's the best program/setup in your experience?

EDIT: Let it be known that I do not have an Nvidia card, so Limelight and the like are impossible at the moment.

Splash top 2 has been garbage compared to nvidia game streaming. Ps4 streaming works amazing too. Even steam in home streaming to a low powered laptop was perfect. But splash top was like watching a low quality YouTube video with huge amounts of lag.

I really want an updated Shield Portable 2... but it doesn't really need updated specs right since it can play (and stream) everything thrown at it

so just to clarify...

do you guys just install the RemotePlay apk and it worked?
no need for any weird profiles/remapping of the Shield Portable's controller?
(how do the PS Home button, Option button and Share button work)

The apk I linked to twice works without any remapping. The home, options, share buttons are relegated to the touch screen. It's not perfect, but it is still better than the vita IMO.

ah. that's a slight bummer but having the rear L2/R2 is awesome.

so let me get this right, you need to tap the three lines to bring up a small overlay with the share button, PS button and option button?

what about the trackpad? how does that work for you?

You actually tap once to get the touch interface to appear, then tap at the bottom to get the ps button to appear. Though in my experience the options button is mapped to the shield's start button.

The track pad is on the touch interface, you'll see it come up when you touch the screen.

thanks! ah it makes more sense now.

hmm did anyone try it with a DS4 or the Shield Controller (with their Shield Tablet)?

Gonna try this out with shield tablet / ipega on lollipop later.

I tried this and it worked great! Except I didnt have to do any of the steps after 8. I also didnt do the 720p step.

Besides that, it looks like you have to use your Internet remote play and Direct play is not an option.

I'm just curious. Do any tablet owners play any M/KB games (like civ 5, for example) on the tablet without going console mode? Is there enough screen real estate to comfortably play?

I've had my shield portable for a few days now and love it. Quick question. Is there anyway of playing kb/m games other than actually connecting them.

I'm mainly on about the stick of truth. I streamed that from my laptop but as its keyboard only the only way to move is with bringing up the on screen keyboard which is obviously a nightmare.

Stick of Truth isn't keyboard only. In fact, it should be optimized for Gamestream and fully controller compatable. Am I missing something?

To answer your question though, yes, you can use a program like pinnacle game profiler to play KB/M only games on the portable.

That's what I thought. But when I launched it via steam big picture on the portable the main menu screen was only controllable by the on screen mouse pointer. When I started the game it was just wasd controls.

I could of sworn I originally played this game on a pad when I first bought it. It was late last night so will have a mess around today and see if I can get it sorted with the pad controls.

Just read a few reviews saying it works great on the portable and it should work fine with the controller. Mine doesn't. Very strange.

All sorted now. I just plugged my 360 controller in and launched the game with that on my laptop. I then disconnected it and the portable controls work fine. I guess some games I just might have to do this. Start the game with a pad but it's all good now.

Oh my I love this device. I've owned tons of handhelds in my time but this is something else. Grid and steam streaming is nigh on perfect on the games I've tried so far. Just need to sort out some emulators :)

I've recently moved my desktop and TV around so that it's no longer possible to play on my TV without getting a ridiculously long HDMI cable. Basically I'm looking for a streaming solution so I don't have to carry my desktop out to the living room every time I want to play a game out there.

Is the Shield the best solution for this? I have a 670 so I have the capabilities to stream games. I would prefer a "Roku" type solution so I'm leaning towards the Shield portable instead of the tablet (I feel like it'd be a waste having a tablet hooked up to the TV 24/7). I wish Nvidia would just come out with a Shield set top box so I don't have to pay for any of the extra stuff I would never use. Any rumors of something like this happening? The Shield tablet just came out so I'm not too hopeful.

Picked this up last week and just finished moving all my psp saves from my psp and vita to the shield tablet and it's amazing.

Also, Zen pinball is so much easier to see on the shield than my vita.

Wow, literally posted yesterday right around when I finished setting everything up too. Should've checked GAF right away haha. Thanks!

np! hope you find what you are looking for
I'm still kinda tempted to get a Shield Portable or Shield Tablet for smaller screen gaming at times

I saw a video which made a pretty valid point on why the Shield Tablet is not very portable. I am tempted to get Shield Portable, but I think they will make a 2.0 version sometime this year. I will wait for that one.
I know it is pretty much a phone, but I use my phone as a phone and would not like to use it to play games.
