Nvidia Shield Thread

I'm torn between a shield tablet and a galaxy tab pro 8.whatever. Anyone want to sway me? I mostly want it for comics and note taking.

Thinking about doing some crazy experiment when finishing building my rig, so here it goes: my ideia is to use remote gamestream with Limelight to play on a smaller screen (on a notebook or a tablet).

Does anyone knows if DSR works with Game Stream?

DSR should work fine.

I'm also a new Shield Portable user. I'd love to try the PS4 RemotePlay app but with the DDoS going on, I'm unable to even try.
So far I'm very impressed by the GRID and just the overall feel of the device. Wish nVidia sold this for <$200 when it first launched. This craps all over the Vita IMO. I'll probably sell that off once the Remoteplay is stable.

I just placed a hold for the Shield Portable to pick up tomorrow.

There's a Gamestop a little ways from me that apparently still has at least one in stock ("limited" stock it says online) and it's apparently only $140. Hopefully my order hold goes through and I can pick it up tomorrow morning, there are only about 2 other Gametop's that stock it and they're both hours away.

I had almost forgotten about the Shield until my girlfriend started hounding me for gift ideas this Christmas and I remembered thinking this was pretty cool, just not something I'd pay full price for myself. I didn't get one from her, but I did get a bunch of giftcards and the Gamestop discount tempted me enough to jump on it.

I want to see how well I can stream my PC games to this guy, and I'm really looking forward to getting some emulators on it, especially PPSSPP. I've been dying to replay FFVII: Crisis Core, but my PSP is falling apart (not to mention I've always hated the analog stick) and it's not on PSN so I can't play it on my Vita.

Crisis core runs like a dream on the shield, you're in for a treat.
Excellent! The only real reason I've kept my PSP is for the few games for it that aren't on PSN like Crisis Core, Metal Gear Portable Ops, Xmen Legends 2, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance.

How are the Portal + Halflife 2 ports they made for Shield? I own them both already on Steam ( who doesn't?), but I do love em and wouldn't mind some fully portable offline ports if they're good. I heard that HL2 episode 1 is apparently exclusive to the tablet, but HL2 is plenty beefy on its own.

Im in the same boat as you. If you are even remotely interested in gaming or streaming from home you should get the shield. Nvidia seems to be faster with updates also, so another point for them. If you are interested in rooting and custom roms the galaxy might be better supported. If comics is the main use I think the galaxy tab would suit you better due to its higher res screen. Its also cheaper. Im leaning more towards the shield due to the much stronger gpu, also to keep the option of streaming pc games open. The regular updates from nvida don't hurt either.

Got one for Xmas. Really like it but after its been on standby and not in use for a while upon use again the wifi takes an age to reconnect. Is this a common problem that can be fixed?

OK, so I just picked up the Shield Portable and for some reason I'm not able to get it connected with my PC. It's not able to find it when I search on my network, even though it is "Gamestream Ready" and I believe my router meets the requirements.

Anyone else have this problem? I searched on google finds about a million different different things that could be causing the issue.

So far so good, but I still have a few minor wrinkles to iron out I think. Playing DA:I on max settings at 1080p, I get random hitches/stutters when panning the camera. I've tried adjusting the bit rate and later tried limelight, but nothing gets rid of it completely. With vsync off, I'm not dropping below 80fps in the tested area. Is this normal? If not, any recommendations? PC is hardwired to router and shield is the only device on the 5ghz band.

Edit: From a game settings perspective, what impacts streaming performance the most? I'm assuming resolution and fps (60 vs 30).

Did you forward all the appropriate ports?

EDIT: OK, ignore everything I had said. Apparently my firewall was blocking it from working.

I "snoozed" it for 5 minutes and it instantly connected to my PC, and it disconnected once the snooze mode ended.

I'll try to see if there's a way I can allow my Shield to access my PC while still having my firewall on...

EDIT 2: Figured out the Firewall, so now there's no issue.

This is so cool! In my apartment there's almost no noticible lag and even with some hitching now and then it's working extremely well.
Can't wait to try this out over a longer distance at my parents house or my girlfriends apartment.

Is the original controller version discontinued now? I don't need a tablet and it would be almost solely for streaming from PC, so I think hat might be a better option if cheaper. Any particular downsides to that model for streaming?

The portable is a great device for streaming, and it is still very much available.

Any rumblings of when a successor might be launching?

I haven't seen anything, but I would be surprised if Nvidia did bring out a successor to the portable. As great as it is, it really is a niche device. I think the tablet was the right direction to go as it has more mainstream appeal, unfortunately.

Is there a guide to using the Shield as an emulation device, or am I over thinking this? I may be picking one up tomorrow for $120.

EDIT: I see it is just running Android so I can use my ROMS, but have to download the emulators from Google play.

I have a question that is probably better served in some general Android thread or something, but I thought I'd try here.

I want to do something crazy: play a game and a podcast at the same time. :) I want to do this for a streaming game. I'm not an Android expert. Is this possible, rooting or otherwise? I'd love to be able to control the volume for each app too so that I can make my game quieter and the podcast louder. There are a lot of mindless games I play that I like to be multitasking like this. As soon as I enter a game, my podcast audio shuts off.

Thanks.

Maybe a dumb question, but does anyone know what affects streaming performance the most from a graphics settings perspective? Is it just resolution/fps?

Those are the only ones that'll make a significant difference. And your modem.

Check the settings for both apps. With a bunch of games in iOS and Android if you turn off music in-game you can then force start resume your music app from the notification center.

I'll look into that more. I think you can disable it in Nvidia shield gams, but my podcast app is not showing up in the notification bar. I'll keep checking around for this stuff.

Also, Wake on Lan is not working for me. I know I have my computer set up correctly because it works when I try to wake up my PC from my Mac, but from the Shield it's not working. :S

Also, not loving the controller on the shield, unfortunately. Going to take some getting used to. Still for $140 this was a steal.

Try a different podcast app or move the MP3 files to a music playing app that can override the sound.

Also the Shield can use 360 and PS3 controllers if that's an option for you.

Unfortunate that this thing is so overpriced in my country. 299EUR for the 16GB version.
It's definitely interesting to me but I don't want to pay that much for it.

It might be more pleasant playing PS4 games on this through remoteplay than te Vita. Anyone have any experience with both?

This thing is so great. Emulation + Streaming + Native Apps = O_O

I just hope they won't continue with only tablets. The tablet seems cool, but I really like the clamshell / handheld design. I don't want to stand the tablet up and have a controller in my hand. I want the controller and screen to be one.

As someone else stated in another thread, something like a Wii U tablet but less bulky could potentially work, but that may look crazy. It'd be nice if Nvidia puts out the more mainstream tablets and then portable stuff too. This device is just too cool.

Getting a new router today and if that does not solve my wifi\intermittent connection problems then the tablet is getting returned.

Just tried it with new router and still having wifi problems. Tablet is going back, shame really as it seemed like a great device.

I'm really sorry to hear that. What kind of problems were you having with the wifi?
It would just randomly stop working. It would not disconnect or anything but it would just stop working sometimes, say I would be loading the play store or a website and it would come up saying no Internet connection. Also after being on standby after waking up it would take about a minute to reconnect to the wifi. Getting a replacement sent tomorrow by Amazon so will report back what this one is like.

Anyone know if the shield can stream PC games in 3d while in console mode? Want to be able to play sole on my projector in the main living room.

Hopefully they keep the portable going as putting the tablet down on a surface and orienting yourself to see without being uncomfortable is pretty difficult to do. My wife has the tablet and I have the portable and she keeps stealing the portable...

Yeah, I hope I'm wrong. I would buy an upgraded portable in a heartbeat.
