Because my wife likes watching her shows at the comfy couch, which in turn bumps me off for comfy couch gaming. Also, my wife likes to have me near during the evenings and hates it when I'm at the PC. Plus I can play my games on the toilet until my legs go numb. That's awesome.
Hope they update with a bigger screen. It looks technically impressive, but it's way too big to have the same screen size as the 3DSXL/Vita. I understand why Anandtech mentioned it was hard to see stuff in streamed PC games.
How is the exhaust while gaming/benching? Heard it is dead quiet which is easy to understand, but do you feel any hot air there and does the device get hot? The active cooling sounds like a good idea because one thing I love about the Vita is it's so thick (and weak
) it doesn't get hot while gaming or charging unlike a smartphone/tablet. The screen might get warm, but that's it.Nice to relax outside of an office chair.

This. If you have a gaming PC with a decent selection of games, buying the Shield for comfy couch gaming makes much more sense than buying a console or building a second PC for the living room. And you get the added mobility of a handheld device.

And to think....I scouring the PPSSPP forum for days now, just to find ANYONE with impressions of the Shield, and not even the devs seem to have one. Yet, here you come to the rescue, with impressions of how my FAVORITE PSP game in the world runs on the Shield. Where is the :bow: emoticon when you need it?
Anyway thanks for the good impressions man. When you talk about RR PSP can you define "freaking playable as heck"...? I mean, are we talking 60fps here or more like 30? Also, can you try Disgaea and any other RPG you can think of?
It's closer to 25 - 30 with Frameskipping on. It's hard to explain. It's like the game is running at close to 30 fps, but with frameskipping, it's not as smooth.
I took a video but cannot upload it right now. It should give you a pretty good idea of what I'm talking about. I post the link later on.
This has been covered a million times over. The answers are the same for Wii U Off TV play, Vita Remote Play, and the Shield.
1. Some people like to watch movies or TV while playing games. Whether its due to a wife, a roommate, or a desire to multitask, it is a thing.
2. More comfortable playing in bed. Personally, I always unwind right before sleep playing a game. Now we have more options on what types of games are available.
3. Gaming on the toilet. Yes, people like to do this.

My review:
Build quality - Wow...this thing is very nice. It feels like a high end device. Very, very solid.
The Screen--With a 720p 294ppi screen (which puts it right below the Nexus 7 1200p 315 ppi screen), the Shield's screen is very crisp. Colors pop like with a OLED screen.
Performance - 2 GB RAM and the Tegra 4 really shine. The speed is fantastic, like the new Nexus 7. 1080p video runs great. There doesn't seem to be any way of switching between apps like the Nexus 7.
Audio - Goddamn, nice speakers. Quality is really good. My only grip is that changing the volume is a two step process--hit volume button, and then hit the up/down icons in the screen. Weird.
Gaming-I got Dishonored to run with my crappy 6 year old b/g Verizon Fios router, but the game ran smooth with a little hitching (I'm using a GTX 660 2GB card). I haven't tried Onlive yet. I tried some of the new Android Tegra games (Tainted Keep) and they ran very smooth. Where this thing really shines is emulators. N64, Playstation, SNES, Gameboy---this thing is the perfect emulation machine. PPSSPP works, but no controller support until the .9 release, so it's pointless right now.
Ports-OMG a MicroSD card slot! Hear that Google and Apple? A motherfucking, MicroSD slot! The HDMI out works perfectly. I don't know if thing has OTG functions though. I didn't try HDMI out on the streaming PC games function either.

so i played the opening scenes in several games last night:
borderlands 2 through the initial claptrap escort mission against boom bewm
bioshock infinite through the baptism
GTA IV through driving to your cousin's apartment
PROS - wow - it actually works as described. in addition, to the games listed above, i played dark souls (not an officially supported game). i did not notice much lag. the shooting mechanics worked well in borderlands and i was able to maneuver in dark souls as if i was sitting at the machine. one caveat is that all this gameplay is quite early in games where twitch/quick responses are not that crucial. i will have a better idea with response when i get to the taurus demon and gargoyles in my dark souls shield only (as in nvidia shield only) run
CONS - the screen, while vibrant, is small compared to either a TV at distance or your monitor. the numbers that pour off enemies in BL2 were pretty small and at times illegible. the phone in GTA IV was not readable (at least to my old eyes) and the world map was relatively small.
i have not tried any emulators thus far. i will try some other PC games like mirrors edge (unsupported) and tomb raider (supported) later today. i briefly tried fallout 3, but the game wanted to set up graphics (as opposed to using the defaults set by the shield). i will have to figure out a way to bypass that check, but, assuming i can get that done, it should play just fine as well. as a matter of fact, as you can use VATS instead of playing as an FPS, it may be more suited for the shield.

For me part of it is the distance from my PC. I tried using splashtop with a wireless 360 controller and the controller would have problems registering all button presses. The shield on the other hand, worked perfectly when on my couch which is a few rooms/1 floor away from my PC.
The Shield is also a decent portable with controller you could bring anywhere without having some rigged up coat hanger attached to your phone. And, if I remember correctly, isn't splashtop a monthly/yearly service fee for the controller/game streaming version?
I'm hoping to order the cable today. Why they went with miniHDMI instead of microHDMI is beyond me.
I wish it could. This is the one problem I've had so far is trying to configure it for games without native controller support (Guild Wars 2 & Cube World), and so far it cannot be done. The Nvidia software translates the inputs and they will not register with any other software I tried.

the reviews sound great. i tried doing splashtop and it's not super smooth. it's decent, but not ideal. it's like playing games at 25 fps even though they're running at 60+.

Here's my quick review:
The build quality is really nice. Yes, its a bit heavy but you get used to it pretty quickly. I was able to game for hours last night in bed no problem. Analog sticks, triggers, buttons, I really like the feel of all of them. Getting head shots in Dead Trigger is so much fun and cooler than with touch controls.
The screen is beautiful. Yes, a little too small for my tastes but everything is bright and crisp. Some of the text is very difficult to see though, reading the text in a game like zombie driver is very hard since it's so tiny. Its still a very nice screen though.
Emulation is fantastic. It plays everything really well. N64 games run better than any other android device I've owned but its still hit and miss. Everything else is flawless. Actually, the only downside is that for the emulators I own the triggers and 2nd analog can't be mapped. Still plenty of buttons, you can map the L3 and R3 buttons too.
Overall I love this thing. It's not perfect but its got a very good build, beautiful screen, and nice controls. I even bought a used gtx 650 card for 90 bucks and can't wait to start streaming my steam games next week.

Its just your standard android OS. There is a dedicated area for your shield games that take advantage of tegra 4, a shield store, and a PC games tab so you can stream games from your PC. Everything else looks like pretty much every android device I've owned.
I forgot to mention the thing is really fast and I had no problem running any game at all. And the sound is very nice and rich too.
Well I had a wife, up to two years ago. I'm just a handheld enthusiast and like playing in bed where its super comfortable. Been handheld gaming a LONG time. Think 1977 when Mattel's LED game "Football" came out.

So is this thing more or less powerful than the new Nexus 7? I just bought the Nexus 7 and rooted it so I could connect a PS3 controller to it. Sort of accomplishes the same thing, sans PC streaming.
I sent an email to cancel my order from the Nvidia website and placed an order on Newegg.
Shipping is like, 50$ cheaper.

Maybe you can add that it can stream Steam games in Big Picture mode that have controller support. People don't seem aware of this feature.

Be very careful with GAF impressions. I was convinced into buying a Vita a few weeks after release because of the super positivity in the Vita release OT and I regret it. I've used it once in the past 8 months.
Yeah, I'd say that's different. A Vita is truly useless. At least this has multiple ways of being utilized in comparison - without having to be homebrew-ready or jailbroken. (This from a Vita owner - waiting for PS4 to release).
