NX will launch in March 2017 globally, won't be at E3 (focusing on Zelda instead)

Because he's always been more wrong than right and no matter how many times this comes up there is never really any reason to believe him. He could say something tomorrow and be completely and utterly wrong again. He does this on the side, he's admitted to that, so why we even take his word is beyond me when he doesn't even devote his time on it to better understand it like others I've met on here like Aquamarine and others that used to come around these parts.

He's an industry analyst. He even got the month right, March. He's not right all the time sure, but I don't know why the meme occurs every thread it's like people willingly ignore the times when he is right.

I'm not saying to take his word every time, I usually take it with a grain of salt. It's probable that he's right. I don't understand why every thread with news from him it's the same meme

Third parties don't all scurry away simply because of power concerns. That's very far down on the long, long list of reasons why developers are dropping the platform.

If Nintendo thinks third parties will all come flocking back when they decides to include meaty hardware, they are in for a rude awakening.

Of course building competent, modern hardware isn't a magic bullet. Nintendo needs to be proactive about reaching out to third-parties and getting them on board, too, which is another one of their problems. I just don't see how weak hardware helps make the case for third-parties in any way.

My point still stands: Building cheap hardware for the sake of being cheap is a mistake that (in part) bit them in the ass for the past two generations and I hope they've learned from past mistakes instead of repeating them. If Nintendo thinks they can keep repeating the same mistakes and come out with a winner, well...

They've already gone mobile. Animal Crossing should be huge when it comes out cause the market is there in gigantic numbers. And that money will feed back into their reserves for more hardware and software. Nintendo is stubborn remember? They refuse to leave the dedicated system business.

Mobile market makes billions of dollars. Not even joking. It makes you wonder why anyone in the industry cares at all about making console games when there's more money on mobile. Actually, I take that back, many do care in Japan and have made many mobile games and barely any console games.

I'm aware they're into the mobile arena. It's going to blow up and do insanely well for them!

I'm with you... that's what i'm saying! NO need for another Nintendo console. Handhelds and 3rd party console/PC games seems like the smartest move.

Let's not pretend that E3 is where the vast amount of consumers get their information. E3 is becoming more irrelevant each passing year.

It's so irrelevant, last year only had 3 new conferences...
E3 is also a big part of why Sony can easily keep increasing their goodwill and ,,4 the players" narrative. Hardcore gamers get the spectacle they love and then spread the love further.
Nintendo's goodwill on the other hand is in the mud. WiiU was a disaster for almost any kind of gamer. This year they keep adding fuel to the fire with either trashy or unwanted entries into once appreciated series like Starfox, Metroid and Paper Mario.

They pretty much make themselves look like complete losers with this move. They will completely fail to regain consumer trust. Trust they much need after said events recently. E3 was the time to show that they know what they are doing, that they want to be a modern part of the videogame industry again. But instead they decide to openly admit that their failed console will now remain dead in the corner for 9 months minimum. Even if they had delay NX internally into next year, E3 would have been crucial to still spread confidence in their NX plans. Now they are doing the opposite.

Sony will probably once again clean house at E3. But hey, I'm sure in winter all kinds of hardcore gamers will anticipate some Nintendo conference and get NX money ready, when the PS4Neo and VR totally isn't already on everyone's christmas wish list. Right.

Hopefully the delay means a ton of day one exclusive Nintendo titles . If the launch lineup has a splatoon , mario , zelda and maybe even a metroid people would flock to it in droves.

It's like they cancelled my Xmas!! I don't mind extra time for Zelda or that NX release is March 2017...

But no NX reveal at E3 hurts me so, so bad!!

It hurts Nintendo more, to not get mind share out for this new system. Sony didn't even have a final Design in February 2013, but they had a whole venue for it.

That's what Nintendo needs. They need a big venue to talk about NX show some games in the works talk about the change in architecture, and show some goods, thats all they have to do.

Then as release get's closer make another announcement show the console show the price show some games, then see how people react.

Last year there was 3 new conferences. Bethesda, Square Enix, and the PC one. The list is actually growing.

E3 is not becoming irrelevant.
It has been, it has been for a few years now. E3 biggest consist was simply put, not providing a equal space for mobile game publishers.
It been killing them ever since. This is the same show that changed it format twice to be "inclusive" and both times ended in failure... over a market that increasingly show that it can't adapt.

I don't see the point in Nintendo wasting it's time... they know where their market is, and it's not at E3.

Seems like they fumbled hard. The went from the only major console launch in 2016 that was rumored to have major AAA Japanese support (ffxv) to a head to head competition with Sonys ps4k or even launching afterwards, after a lot of the demand for new hardware from core consumers will be gone.

It also would have made sense for once looking at the software side of the Wii U. All of their long term sellers are on their last legs with nothing on the horizon to replace them. It would have been a pretty smooth transition considering it's Nintendo. Now they have a huge hole to fill for holidays 2016. And even then they will have to reveal the nx around that time, so that will harm their sales potential this year even more.

But! We don't know enough about the nx yet. Maybe their os isn't close to ready, maybe some concept fell flat. Hopefully it will come out guns blazing with enough software to back it up. I'm still excited, yet a bit disappointed that I won't get to even see it at e3.

A Direct isn't good enough for a console reveal.

I'm not talking about a direct. I'm talking about an actual event. Similar to the Space World event(s) they held in the past. I'm talking about the big media event they held for press (gaming websites/mags and actual press) when they fully detailed the Wii U and it's features after E3 that year. Nintendo still holds hands on events for gaming media as well all the time. Nintendo Directs aren't the only things they do. They've never fully relied on them. Just like even with the Direct presentations they're always at E3. The Directs just take place of a stage presentation. The only thing missing is a live audience.

What's important about a blow out of the NX is people around the world seeing it and that the gaming media and actual traditional press see it. You don't need E3 for that. Sony didn't need E3 for the PS4 blow out. Neither then Microsoft for the Xbox One. If you can bring the press to where you want them to be you can do the reveal anywhere and however you like. Large conventions are irrelevant to the process.

All you're doing at E3 is sharing the spotlight. That is why some aren't even bothering this year or haven't bothered in the past. It's not the best outlet to present information that some might think. Don't ever let yourself be fooled into thinking it's more important then it really is.

I'm in the camp that thinks that Nintendo's only ace in the hole is their creativity and innovation in the console space.
The Wii-mote caught on fire in terms of mainstream attention. The Wii-U gamepad sadly did not. They always tried to do something new though.

I'd say Nintendo should go with a cheap, modest and efficient system with a brand new hook that gets people excited. Basically, try and have lightning strike twice. Whether that's AR, QoL or more motion gaming, I don't know. Meanwhile they double down on mobile and stuff like Amiibo because that seems to be bringing in the money.

And I think they have to go this route because I feel that Nintendo coming out with the thing we all want (a expensive, conventional, powerful console with a regular controller) is going to hit today's market with little more than a whimper. Nintendo's first parties would struggle hard to pump out AAA games that make actual use of that kind of hardware and third parties will likely still leave them to their own devices.

The PS4 and XB1 are simply too well-established in that particular area and the userbase has shifted accordingly. With the iterative releases of the PS4K and the XB1.5 Nintendo will be at a disadvantage from day one.

So they should cater to their strengths and that's their innovative side coupled with their new ventures into mobile.

Okay okay.

This I agree with in the most part, Nintendo needs to somehow recapture that Blue Ocean they had with the Wii. Where granny could pick up a controller and instantly know how to use it.

How I knew the Wii U was going to be a crazy flop the second I saw it was because it's controller. The controller was just a more complicated dual shock controller. "Casual audiences won't be able to use this" I said over and over and look how it turned out, not only was the Wii U controller uncomfortable, it was confusing and even hardcore gamers have trouble with control schemes that utilize all the abilities of the controller (Like Star Fox Zero).

So yes, one of the major things Nintendo needs to be able to do is grab everyone with ease of use. This is why I think vastly improved motion controls should be a part along with a new Wii Sports bundled.

The only thing where this hits a brick wall is this motion control stuff has turned into virtual reality, the controller of the NX will probably never be on the level of say the Vive controllers. So I don't know where Nintendo can go with this and differentiate themselves from say Sony, who are bringing back motion controls with PSVR.

I also feel that Nintendo massively mishandled the Wii in the long run and hurt the image of motion controls. The Wii controller should have been M+ from day one. There should have also been more games that uniquely utilize the controller, instead of just forcing games to use it where buttons are more useful.

The Wii also should have been the console for indie developers. Low power means low cost. Yet Nintendo never embraced the indie (and in fact often chased them away).

I agree another Nintendo console with just a controller and power will hit the ground face first. Why would I pick up a Nintendo console when I can pick up the other consoles with more games and more support and they do the exact same thing?

Nintendo's gimmick though this time, has to sail that blue ocean.

Let's not pretend that E3 is where the vast amount of consumers get their information. E3 is becoming more irrelevant each passing year.

Not with 21 million people viewing it on Twitch it isn't. This is a sentiment I've only seen on GAF and it doesn't match up with the viewing data or with how the rest of the industry sees it. A couple of publishers out of hundreds choosing to do their own separate events doesn't change that.

I completely disagree. E3 streams literally everywhere on the internet, and with their directs streaming on YouTube, they engage a huge portion of their potential audience.

Plus, audience doesn't even really matter. Console launches have historically been part of large E3 productions. From a PR perspective, it's insane that Nintendo will quietly fart out an announcement later this year instead of making it feel like a massive thing at the industry's biggest event.

To be honest the answer kind of lies in the middle of both POV.

You're right that E3 traditionally has been the place where everything happens. It is our christmas day. It is often amazing.

But at the same time the industry is changing to services based economics, and this is reflected in how companies are behaving. It has been mentioned that Activision, Disney Interactive and WarGaming are not attending this year. EA are doing their own thing a week before the event. Nintendo have done their own thing for a few years now.

Rockstar and Valve have never attended E3 in it's recent format.

But what we are seeing as well is more events spread out over the year. Sony alone had four or Five conferences last year. There own event in Paris. Call of duty has it's own event. Basically with the amount of money at stake everyone needs their own space and time to project what they are going to do.

But it is ..as a fan .. Scary that this is happening. I never thought i would hear this news this morning. It doesn't feel right, but at the same time, this is kind of been the way in recent years. Also Gamescom is actually a bigger event now than E3 i believe.

He didn't actually say that.

Absolutely laughable. Missing Xmas is just a case of not being ready, they should have prepared better in the last two years.

Skipping E3 though is just an absolutely crazy decision. They would have been the centre of attention for the biggest event in gaming and yet they're chosing to pass it up.

I have no faith in this console because Nintendo are clearly as incompetant and out of touch as ever.

Been saying 2017 for ages. March is actually earlier than I thought.

People forgot we heard about the NX way earlier than we normally would have, just because Nintendo wanted to ease fears about the mobile stuff.

If NX is in fact a home console and ends up actually launching in March 2017, I can't help but think things did not go according to plan. I don't think Nintendo would choose to wait until several months post-holiday to launch an NX console, even if it meant a lackluster launch lineup.
Zelda as the only playable title at E3 does not bode well for Nintendo's E3 presence this year, or the lineup for Wii U/3DS for that matter. I do wonder what the caliber of the NX reveal will be later this year. Hoping for a huge event with E3-level hype and reveals to make up for missing leverage in June.

I remember the same negativity and Nintendoomed comments when they said wouldn't have done an E3 live conference, luckily that was a great E3, so I'm still positive.

E3 is about the closed door stuff. Publisher deals, retail deals. The Japanese home console market is dying. By not showing at E3 9 months before launch it's like they're writing off not only 3rd party support in the west, but alienating retailers as well. And Nintendo's had a shit relationship with Amazon for years.

I'm really interested to see what their strategy is because from the outside it looks like that gif of the nodding dude putting a gun to his own head.

Yeah, that's all fair, but I think the bigger idea is that so many of Nintendo's fans were expecting them to announce the NX at E3. Their disappointment of dedicated fans (as indicated in this thread) puts Nintendo in catch up mode from the get go. That's not a great position to be in considering their overall position in this generation and the lack of Wii U sales. Mostly I'm just scared the NX will become a secondary project while Nintendo pushes full force into mobile.

I just hoped on a name reveal or showing the console design at e3.

Didn't they showed the wii console first without the wiimote?

Everyone was talking about the blue light.

Woooooow, what a baaaaad move by Nintendo, IMO.

All their E3 will be then is...

Zelda Wii U
Paper Mario Color Splash
Pokemon Sun/Moon
Metroid Prime Federation Force
the Dragon Quest localizations

And... I think that's it? Might be one other 3DS game I'm forgetting but that is a paltry list of games for the year with only Pokemon and Zelda really being the headliners (if the Wii U version is even coming this year???)

I don't get why everyone's freaked out by them not being at e3. They typically do a direct the. Which is light years better than some awkward stage show.

Don't forget about the metric fuckton of Indie games nobody actually cares about.

This decision gives fills me with regret for purchasing a Wii U. I've got one game to look forward to this year.
Awesome.

Maybe they will focus on 3ds?

I remember the same negativity and Nintendoomed comments when they said wouldn't have done an E3 live conference, luckily that was a great E3, so I'm still positive.

Going into that E3 we had a somewhat decent idea of the company's lineup for the rest of the year and what to look forward to (e.g. Pokemon ORAS, Smash Bros, Bayonetta 2), were hot off the success of Mario Kart 8, and they had announced various events like Treehouse Live and the invitational tournament which were interesting and exciting.

This year literally the only thing we know about their E3 is that they aren't revealing the console which is supposed to come out 9 months later, Zelda is the only playable game and has been delayed again, the 3DS at least has Pokemon to look forward to but the Wii U has just Paper Mario for the holidays which already has mixed impressions, and this is after last year's presentation from them which was already thought of as one of the worst ever.

The scenarios are very different.

Nintendo's gimmick though this time, has to sail that blue ocean.

Well said. Yeah, Nintendo is currently between a rock and a hard place.

I have a feeling that the Wii-U came to be solely because of one idea. 'How about a controller with a touchscreen like the DS'.

That one idea is where they've bet all their money on and not once during development have they reconsidered the idea or asked themselves WHY people would want that on their home console. It proved to be useless and underutilized in 90% of the Wii-U's library and the console has very, very little to offer beside that one gimmick. They were so focused on whether they actually could, they stopped wondering whether they should.

So let's all hope that Nintendo doesn't have this kind of tunnel-vision again with the NX. I can imagine them going crazy with the idea of a modular system or a handheld/base console type structure. But I hope they actually look at the idea critically this time instead of just dropping it on the market acting like it solves a problem that doesn't actually exist in the real world.

Totally, i was one of those..well it seemed really obvious that they would reveal it at E3.

Think you can tell in most comments the general shock about this announcement. Perhaps things will be made clearer in the common couple of weeks.

Re: NX not at e3:
Nintendo haven't had a live stage presence at e3 for 2 years now, so it was kind of dumb to expect them to reveal their console there. [edit: just talking about revealing the console. I fully expected it to feature at e3, IF it was revealed before hand]
They could have a Nintendo Direct literally a week later for all we know. It's hardly the end of the world.

Re: NX not coming til 2017
Makes the above point make even more sense. Plus seems to chime with the possibility of Polaris being used as better chance of hardware being available in enough quantity for a worldwide launch.

Zelda delayed to 2017
It's hardly a surprise, but I'm gutted nevertheless.

e3 will only feature Zelda
It's a dream come true for 12 year old me. But it does seem bizarre and makes it glaringly obvious (if it wasn't already) that WiiU was abandoned for NX a while back.
