E3 isn't as important as you think. Nintendo has been distancing themselves from it over previous years, and E3's attendance has been going down. Some big developers are skipping it entirely this year. And think about it: if Nintendo announces an NX reveal press conference in say August with playable demos, can you imagine press turning it down because it's not E3? They'll have all the press to themselves, unlike E3. And then they could bring playable units to PAX West in Seattle, letting consumers try it out, getting even more press. The mainstream press will also give NX more coverage if they aren't talking about PS4K/Neo and stuff at the same time.

Well the console is clearly too far off to show in June. So it would make no sense to show software for it before we've seen the hardware.
If there was nothing at all to show and no chance of anything being ready for March.......why would they slate it for March?
WiiU will have been left hung out to dry for the best part of a year by the time NX launches. And as I said in a previous post - unless you think Nintendo's various studios have been sat twiddling their thumbs for two years it's pretty simple to deduce that everything was shifted to NX some time ago.
Time will tell, but I think Nintendo are set up for NX's first year better than they have been for some time.
And who cares about Zelda anyway(What!?); not coming out this year and it will only be a tease anyway (really?) (considering how the game will come out early 2017 with the NX launch instead of this fall). Really hope Nintendo has a good game plan for Wii U though, as I could easily picture a worse E3 then last year (though to be fair, only the Main Direct sucked; everything else was great).[/QUOTE]

I don't think showing a rushed system is what hurt the Wii-U though, at least in terms of its reveal. Having a god awful and confusing reveal, being too similar to its predecessor, being under-powered compared to competition, and again relying on a gimmick are what hurt the Wii-U. But instead of just learning from those mistakes they're just opting to not show the system at E3 in general because last time they did it hurt them. It reminds me of when they opted out of competing against Sony with hardware power after the PS2 crushed the GameCube, it was just them not learning.

Well, I was wanting a little space between the PS4k and NX since I'll be getting both. So, I hope the PS4K comes this fall. Can't believe Zelda is falling back again. Fucking insane how long that game is taking. Hope it's worth the wait.

I do wonder if they always planned a March release for the NX. I could see it having its advantages. It allows them to adjust the price prior to holiday 2017 when they are expected to make their big "push" like with the 3DS launch.
It basically gives them a bit of leniency from shareholders if it doesn't take off right away, especially because their last two hardware launches were so anemic.
Not launching during a holiday also gives them a bit more center stage to deliver a clear message about what the NX is. The last thing they need is a repeat of Wii U confusion.
I've explained this. They barely attend e3 the last two years and you are expecting them to reveal hardware at the event? They will reveal NX either in a Direct or at their own press event.
Even Sony/MS didn't unveil their last consoles at e3. There was no chance Nintendo would.

You are also talking about a company that guaranteed Zelda would come out in 2015, and now it is coming out in 2017. I think there is an appreciable chance the NX will be delayed past March.

Indeed. Missing Holiday sales is the big shock for me. They must have a darned good reason for it. My guess is that the hardware simply isn't ready

The same wishful thinking since the N64/GameCube days. Do I trust that Nintendo will bringing the goods, of course. They've learned that equity even though it's erroded for a while.
I do see slightly better 3rd party support but this paradigm shift isn't going magically take place because they have a platform to to sowc for once.
Nintendo has pigeonholed themselves into this almost popular niche where they have been able to sustain enough in their own efforts. This is why people who buy their platforms are satisfied enough even though they are missing the massive catalogue on the opposing platforms.
It's the same reason I haven't been all in on Nintendo since SNES. I've bought every platform since but have been consistently burned by droughts and the status of them as a brand has out them in the "kiddy" category for years.
It's not an insult but the reality of the position Nintendo is in and has been in for a while has been well documented. It's OK if you love them solely but not so OK when comparing them to their main competitors on PS/XB.
I won't hold my breath for some magical comeback when they have damaged themselves and also have viable self sustained competitors like PS4/XB.
The same types of questions you ask of Nintendo aren't there for their respective adversaries and it's Nintendo who is to blame.

No, I'd actually prefer them to show up demonstrating some semblance of competence, planning, and perhaps a little ambition to boot. You believe after last year's E3 they haven't had the opportunity? But hey, what am I saying? Nintendo obviously always knows best, exemplified by their current position and the nigh complete absence of software for the remainder of the year.
Right, who cares about E3? I eagerly look forward to the NX's unveiling by a corporate suit in a dull, bland white office in Japan through a Direct a few months before release. That'll really get me pumped for their new system and software.

The thing that shocks me the most is that it appears that Nintendo has decided to completely punt on 2016. I guess it's possible that they could announce a new game or two for the holiday but since Zelda is going to be the only game that's going to be playable, I'm having serious doubts about that.

Could easily be that, but, even then i think NX might not repeat all of the same mistakes the Wii U did, like name, branding, hardware power, etc. And that includes getting a rushed thing out in the holidays, ad we know that didnt help much.
We still dont know anything about this NX 😕

Patterns mean nothing when the context behind the past few E3s (Wii U floundering badly with no replacement, and PS4 and XB1 going ham - winning the mainstream over is impossible so might as well double down on the hardcore) have been entirely different from this (the chance to win back the mainstream audience and turn things around from their worst-selling system).
Sony and Microsoft also revealed their console before E3. E3 was just a further blowout.
The line of thinking was either Nintendo reveals the system before E3 and then has a further blowout at the event, OR they wait until the event to reveal. Both of those are reasonable predictions given what we knew.
Nobody had ever foreseen them having absolutely nothing on NX until well after E3.

Sure, but not really what I was replying to. If we start assumign none of what we heard is happening then there's not much to debate. On the basis that they have commited to launching this Fiscal year, to their investors, I feel safe in making the assumption that they'll have some software ready launch it with.

Letas be fair, the NX could come out anytime and it still won't compete against the PS4. It is destined to be a secondary system for people to play 2-3 first party games a year, then immediately go back to PS4/XB1/PC to play everything else.
Yeah, I think them not showing it at E3, or waiting to the Fall to give more details (which is what I think they said) implies there is a decent chance it is going to get delayed. Everything probably has to go right for them to get it out in March 2017.
I just can't think of a good season why not to show it earlier than that.

With this delay and crap Nintendo better make sure NX doesn't have a single game drought in its first 12 months.
It's so curious to launch a new console with a new Zelda in March. Could potentially see Zelda, Metroid, and Mario in the first 9 months. Of course this is hopeful thinking and based on the idea that Retro is making a new Metroid game.
