Someone on Twitter was asking the same thing and the only conclusion people seem to be arriving to is that perhaps Donald Trump Jr. and or his lawyers thought it would be better to "confess" and share the emails rather than "being shown guilty" when NYT eventually posts the same thing.

Which ultimately I feel like it's pointless considering Mueller would have likely found it anyway.

I think there's a good possibility that this is a fake story. That Trump and Co has made to have a gotcha moment.

This feels too... easy. And Republicans will only move at the absolute last moment. However, the case is being built up by the month that you can't just shrug off. People have been trying that since day one. We've had progress. Like Flynn, and sessions, and firing comes for investigations. This is history being made, nothing to compare it to.

And what exactly could be their gotcha moment here? The lawyer has admitted to the meeting. Trump Jr has admitted to the meeting. The emails all correspond to this... What could they possibly say?

"We set up an elaborate ruse to fake all of this spending millions of dollars and wasting everyone's time just to prove you can't trust the democrats because they believe us when we set up big elaborate lies?"

Dude, Trump Jr tweeted out an email that said he would "love" to meet with a "russian government lawyer" in a effort of "Russia and its government to help get Trump elected".

I would say this is as close as you could possibly get to a smoking gun but this admin is just so damned stupid.
