President Barack Obama on Tuesday downplayed Donald Trump's suggestion that November's election is "rigged," and said the GOP presidential nominee needs to toughen up.

"I'd advise Mr. Trump to stop whining and try to go make his case to get votes," Obama said at a White House news conference alongside Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.

"If whenever things are going badly for you, you start blaming somebody else, then you don't have what it takes to be in this job," Obama continued. "There are a lot of time things don't go our way or my way … that's OK, you fight through it."
Obama on Tuesday said he would reserve more scathing remarks against Trump for the campaign trail, but insisted that American elections can't be rigged because the process for voting for president is "so decentralized."

"One way of weakening America is if you start betraying those basic American traditions that have been bipartisan and have helped hold together this democracy for well over two centuries," Obama added.

I suppose this sort of thing is to strengthen the resolve of the moderate voter because I can't see anything changing the mind of Trump supporters.

It's a shame POTUS isn't respected more. Being mocked by Obama should be massively humiliating, but I'm sure Trump and supporters will shrug it off as Democratic propaganda and slander.

Obama is complicit in the rigged election. Confirmed.

It's impressive how he convinced republicans who love him and support him so much and are in the vast majority of states the people in charge of running the elections, to rig it against themselves and Continually elect presidents they just really and truly adore.

I disagree that our elections can't be rigged, but yeah, Obama is on a roll.

They can't be rigged on the macro-scale that Trump has been hinting at.

You still have the potential for another 2000 Florida result, but that rigging was only made possible by the fact that the state was extremely close to begin with (and Florida was the tipping point for electoral votes).

Preach. And that is exactly what Trump is doing. Whining like a little bitch, and it 2/3 weeks I hope we never have to hear from you again, certainly not 24/7.

To rig our elections you would need so many fucking people involved on so many levels in multiple states that it would be damn near impossible to keep secret.

It's why actual "rigging" revolves around gerrymandering districts to include the right number of voters on your side and then you just let them vote naturally.

Seriously get a job as a poll worker or working during the election and you'll see what a god damn pain in the ass it would be. So many people and checks and observers.

Has there been any comment/coverage on whether Obama would like to continue if it was constitutionally possible?

A year or two ago he said he is glad he can move on because he wants more time with his family. That said, nothing like that would be discussed this close to the election, as it would fuel crazy conspiracy theories unnecessarily.

I still distinctly remember '08 and people saying "he's going to be dictator, get in there and change the law so he can be President forever..."
