Prior to the recent trend of posting pictures there's been more conversation about people being embarrassed that these people are going out trying to present the views of more knowledgeable people making us all look bad. Kind of like how the Tea Party reflects poorly on thoughtful people like Gaborn.

But you don't look like anything, because you aren't doing shit. Hard to look like anything when you're hiding behind your monitor, making fun of people. Get the fuck out there with your own superior signs informed by your superior knowledge if you want representation. Otherwise hush . . .

And you're doing the same thing, so maybe stop crying about it or as a wise man said....hush.

Maybe not, but perhaps you could do something more appropriate to get that message across? I'm not defending how these people are protesting, but I'm not going to talk shit about them for doing something that is just and right in principle.

People do it to the tea party all the time. I think the tea party is a stupid waste of time that overall makes America more poorly informed. Same with these people.

How do you know what I'm doing? I might not be working towards improving bank regulation, but I do work in field that is "important" to the left, and I do it as a professional, not some jackass wasting his time on the street.

This.

When trying to project to America why our current ecomic policy doesn't work and why there isn't actually a debt crisis, one should not wear a wet suit while holding, what appears to be, a lunch box with a chalk board glued onto it.

It's symbolic, though. Don't you see? The wet suit represents the coming tide of white conservative Jews who plan on decapitating each and every one of us middle class peons. The lunch box is a metaphor for the countless starving Americans on the street, thanks to George Bush and company. The chalk board clearly suggests a need for education reform, in order to compete with China.

Duh.

Are those people your friends or family or something?

Actually a couple of relatives were supposed to go. But that's not about them it's about an awful poster being an awful poster.

What does funny, geeky stuff have to do with this group's ability to convey logical policy suggestions?
Can you post something intelligent about their policy suggestions? (I haven't really looked at their sign besides the last page).
I am asking, because as painfully naive as their 'message' is, so far the people most obsessed with this protest are not shining by the cleverness of their posts either.

Or do they policy suggestions suck mostly because they don't match your potentially equally idiotic policy suggestions?

You might consider, since he's causing you so much emotional trauma, the ignore function.

Like I've said, their talk about corporate "personhood" reflects a lack of knowledge on the issue. They're talking about campaign finance reform. They're talking about "getting money out of politics" through a presidential commission. They want a 4 hour work day. These are things that even if I agree the general "goals" like campaign finance, stricter lobbying restrictions and ethics laws, and better labor relations, I can't agree with these people because they don't know what the fuck they're talking about.

How many times do I have to say I agree with their "aims" to a certain degree, but only with rational, informed discourse.

Maybe you should do the same about comments about your mentor.
But I'm enjoying our conversation, and not whining about you at all. I'm just trying to help you overcome this problem you seem to be having, because I consider us close friends. Let's talk about drum circles and grilled cheese sales, and guy fawkes masks for a while.

Oh sweet the Communist Party of the USA appeared!

To change the trajectory of this thread, why don't we discuss those policies that have been poorly articulated by these protestors that we'd like to see changed.

I would like to see this movement embrace the repeal of FISA and The Patriot Act.

Wrong, I'm not in this thread dogging on people who are out there in NY doing something. I'm not making fun of pictures of people who are getting engaged and busy. And you can brt your ass that when there are protests and activist things going on in my neck of the woods, I am involved.

Wow. So . . . Your activism is going to your 9 - 5? Bravo, chap. It's worth mentioning, too, that not everyone's political struggles have to look like yours (lunch breaks included, lol).

What good are protests? Why don't you do something constructive like donate time to a non-prof working towards banking reform? Try and get a job with one of those non-profs?
There are way more useful things you could do.

Here's my problem, and maybe I'm being out of line, so call me out on it if so. I'm rather thick skinned.

When I want to get the message across, I have a discussion with people. I talk, I donate, I take time to help people get registered to vote, volunteer when I can. Ya know, actually trying to turn the tide. I'm but one man, but I do what I can. My actions speak loudly, and I've been able to get others to help me. Small steps, but steps none the less.

What I don't do, is use the fact that 50 million fucking Americans don't have insurance as a reason to sit around a drum and hang out with my breathing stereotype friends. This shit isn't a fucking game. People are hurting right now. Using the excuse "we need to stop the fat cat wall street folks from hurting America" to organize a stereotypical hippie gathering hurts the cause, doesn't help it.

Maybe I'm overreacting a bit, but I don't see a purpose to this event except to, honestly, make fun of people on the left. Seriously, this shit looks like a Daily Show bit on how Fox News thinks about people that lean politically the way I do.

Wow Manos. Sitting around all night making fun of people who are out doing something to make change? Just how did you become such a corporate whore?

Why is laughing at barely literate signs and drum circles "corporate whoredom"?

How long are the hippies will be camping out by wall street? If I get out of work early tomorrow I might take the ferry over and check it out also get chipotle.

He has been mocking the very idea of this thing even before the hilarious pictures started rolling in.

Like the sad souls who roll into Christina Hendricks threads only to post pictures of large animals. Get a life.

Tons of people have, have you even read the thread? Many who probably agree with you politically.

Yeah there are some strategic problems with what these people are doing-- there is no question about that.

It's just kinda sad to see you guys going as far as spending the night making fun of them.

I'm sure you expressed the same regret at the poor tea partiers when all of the internet meanies were laughing at their ridiculous signs and or clothes.

This is what I don't get. How many people here defending these guys have spent tons of time laughing at idiotic tea partiers? The tea party has some usable ideas mixed up in a shitton of idiotic rants. This group is very similar. Granted I think there are more useful ideas here than in the tea party, but the concept is fundamentally identical.

The whole thing is laughable.

The poster as a ballerina on the wall street bull. Why? What does that represent? What does that say about struggles of America's working class and the wealth gap in this country?

It also says bring tent. Why? What does camping out in front of Wall Street accomplish? People have to go to work, you're in the way. From what I hear, NYPD does not fuck around.

Then, lo and behold, a group of people show up who look exactly like a group of people who would use twitter to spread their bring tent protest.

It's nothing like your Christina Hendricks example, as the OP's image was joke enough.

I think the question still stands then, right? Why aren't you there? Being "too knowledgeable" doesn't make much sense as a reason not to be in solidarity.

I agree; I tried listing some specific policies I'd liked changed earlier, but only brucewaynegretzky paid any attention...

I'm not there because these people don't represent my views. They represent a caricature of them. That and I don't have the money to get up to NY for a protest. Also, living in DC has really turned me off to big "political" gatherings. My experience has been they are full of a bunch of people just clinging to something trendy. It's kind of insulting to someone who actually wants to spend their professional life in government service.

On Thursday as my girlfriend and I were wrapping up our vacation in New York I remarked, "Gee, I really haven't seen as many hipsters here as in Toronto."

They were obviously all at home making signs and laying out their outfits on the bed for the following week.

Also, in that picture, is a link to the Ron Paul campaign page and a person wearing a pig mask.

Just thought I'd point that out.

Yeah, anon ronpaul supporters. That's a new one for me. Next to larouche types.

Okay, so, at the same event you have

- Ron Paul supporters
- a woman dressed up as a pig with a rainbow tie, pink tights, gold shoes, grandma hands, cutting what appears to be a person caught within the social safety net
- LaRouche supports
- A dude in a wet suit
- A drum circle
- Choir

So.... go team?

These people have this false idea of how a protest is "supposed" to play out that does appear as an unfortunate stereotype. And I agree that it is upsetting as a political liberal to see this that because it does have the potential to leave the movement worse for the wear. These people are hipsters. The majority are likely from middle class families and come from relative comfort. But this situation is a problem for so many of us, why should we assume we would have a similar background to everyone in the same circumstance? Why should we let small differences prevent us from uniting on something that affects us all so profoundly? This can die off as something that a small minority tried and failed miserably at, or it can grow with each person bringing to the movement their own voice and their own ideas. It's cliche, but people in numbers are strong. I choose to stand up and make something of this rather than take cheap shots against people who in reality are more like me than not.

Nah, you're right. Stay where you are. You may injure yourself getting off that incredibly high horse you're on.

What high horse? Like I said, I actually work towards things I believe in rather than stand around Wall Street.

The girl on the left would be cute if it weren't for the angle at which she's holding her face...
