How do you know what I'm doing? I might not be working towards improving bank regulation, but I do work in field that is "important" to the left, and I do it as a professional, not some jackass wasting his time on the street.

It's symbolic, though. Don't you see? The wet suit represents the coming tide of white conservative Jews who plan on decapitating each and every one of us middle class peons. The lunch box is a metaphor for the countless starving Americans on the street, thanks to George Bush and company. The chalk board clearly suggests a need for education reform, in order to compete with China.

Can you post something intelligent about their policy suggestions? (I haven't really looked at their sign besides the last page).
I am asking, because as painfully naive as their 'message' is, so far the people most obsessed with this protest are not shining by the cleverness of their posts either.

Like I've said, their talk about corporate "personhood" reflects a lack of knowledge on the issue. They're talking about campaign finance reform. They're talking about "getting money out of politics" through a presidential commission. They want a 4 hour work day. These are things that even if I agree the general "goals" like campaign finance, stricter lobbying restrictions and ethics laws, and better labor relations, I can't agree with these people because they don't know what the fuck they're talking about.

How many times do I have to say I agree with their "aims" to a certain degree, but only with rational, informed discourse.

To change the trajectory of this thread, why don't we discuss those policies that have been poorly articulated by these protestors that we'd like to see changed.

I would like to see this movement embrace the repeal of FISA and The Patriot Act.

Wrong, I'm not in this thread dogging on people who are out there in NY doing something. I'm not making fun of pictures of people who are getting engaged and busy. And you can brt your ass that when there are protests and activist things going on in my neck of the woods, I am involved.

What good are protests? Why don't you do something constructive like donate time to a non-prof working towards banking reform? Try and get a job with one of those non-profs?
There are way more useful things you could do.

Here's my problem, and maybe I'm being out of line, so call me out on it if so. I'm rather thick skinned.

When I want to get the message across, I have a discussion with people. I talk, I donate, I take time to help people get registered to vote, volunteer when I can. Ya know, actually trying to turn the tide. I'm but one man, but I do what I can. My actions speak loudly, and I've been able to get others to help me. Small steps, but steps none the less.

What I don't do, is use the fact that 50 million fucking Americans don't have insurance as a reason to sit around a drum and hang out with my breathing stereotype friends. This shit isn't a fucking game. People are hurting right now. Using the excuse "we need to stop the fat cat wall street folks from hurting America" to organize a stereotypical hippie gathering hurts the cause, doesn't help it.

Maybe I'm overreacting a bit, but I don't see a purpose to this event except to, honestly, make fun of people on the left. Seriously, this shit looks like a Daily Show bit on how Fox News thinks about people that lean politically the way I do.

This is what I don't get. How many people here defending these guys have spent tons of time laughing at idiotic tea partiers? The tea party has some usable ideas mixed up in a shitton of idiotic rants. This group is very similar. Granted I think there are more useful ideas here than in the tea party, but the concept is fundamentally identical.

The whole thing is laughable.

The poster as a ballerina on the wall street bull. Why? What does that represent? What does that say about struggles of America's working class and the wealth gap in this country?

It also says bring tent. Why? What does camping out in front of Wall Street accomplish? People have to go to work, you're in the way. From what I hear, NYPD does not fuck around.

Then, lo and behold, a group of people show up who look exactly like a group of people who would use twitter to spread their bring tent protest.

It's nothing like your Christina Hendricks example, as the OP's image was joke enough.

I think the question still stands then, right? Why aren't you there? Being "too knowledgeable" doesn't make much sense as a reason not to be in solidarity.

I'm not there because these people don't represent my views. They represent a caricature of them. That and I don't have the money to get up to NY for a protest. Also, living in DC has really turned me off to big "political" gatherings. My experience has been they are full of a bunch of people just clinging to something trendy. It's kind of insulting to someone who actually wants to spend their professional life in government service.
 
On Thursday as my girlfriend and I were wrapping up our vacation in New York I remarked, "Gee, I really haven't seen as many hipsters here as in Toronto."

They were obviously all at home making signs and laying out their outfits on the bed for the following week.

These people have this false idea of how a protest is "supposed" to play out that does appear as an unfortunate stereotype. And I agree that it is upsetting as a political liberal to see this that because it does have the potential to leave the movement worse for the wear. These people are hipsters. The majority are likely from middle class families and come from relative comfort. But this situation is a problem for so many of us, why should we assume we would have a similar background to everyone in the same circumstance? Why should we let small differences prevent us from uniting on something that affects us all so profoundly? This can die off as something that a small minority tried and failed miserably at, or it can grow with each person bringing to the movement their own voice and their own ideas. It's cliche, but people in numbers are strong. I choose to stand up and make something of this rather than take cheap shots against people who in reality are more like me than not.
