Oculus Quest

Get some training with BoxVR/FitXR. My deteriorating physical condition is constantly improving now. I barely was able to do 15 minute sessions 3 times per week and now I can do 30 minutes daily. Thanks to that I can play games like Beat Saber or Sprint Vector for hours without breaking a sweat. Can't wait to be able to do the longest training sessions in BoxVR and get Popeye arms. XD

I don't give a f to fitness.

and why are you telling me to exercise in minigames when I'm already exercising in a good game? I don't care for the exercising per se, but you'll get your share of fitness in any VR game, so I don't even see the point of minigames dedicated to it...

Take it as a joke, dude. I'm not going to tell anyone how to live their life.

Speaking of Sprint Vector, is that game on Oculus Quest 2? I love that game but it screams wireless because you need to physically turn around.

no, Sprint Vector isn't. They really should, it's the only game where their infamous arm swinging locomotion really makes sense and yes, turning would be just much better.

I was actually mad at this game at the time because it was being sold as Mario Kart VR and yet was this quasi-fitness craziness. Still, a good game with a very interesting concept. It felt like total freedom to jump around and climbing and getting real fast - at the cost of much sweat I wasn't prepared for...

it would be perfect for Quest and I can only believe they're working on a port of they're smart

Just to say that I ignored the recommendations of getting more used to VR with Saints & Sinners before Half life Alyx and just jumped to HL:A anyway ...

It’s fine, maybe my time with the horrendous oculus SDK 1 prepared me for nausea, but with the warping mode, I played hours of it now.

What a brilliant experience and game. Not even done, this is the true GOTY, makes all the race for better graphics in 2D look kind of moot now, immersive VR with all the little details Valve put in it feels like the true future of gaming.

It’s really unmatched

Yes, it really is a revelation in gaming.

Just a shame VR is just not light and compact enough for the masses

I don't understand who would suggest getting the hang of VR with Saints & Sinners before Alyx, or why. I'd sooner suggest the opposite (but generally recommend other first experiences simply to see if you are or aren't susceptible to motion sickness and go from there). It's an equally in depth & mature VR game with possibly less comfort/introductory/polished options, less guidance and more jank (and my VR GOTY, Alyx should have been a lot better and isn't perfect itself and S&S to me is the meatiest VR experience with depth outside the VR twist even if it's not the best in everything).

If I recommended S&S before Alyx to anyone it'd probably be just over the game's preference pushing it on top for me, not as a lighter first introduction to VR or anything. But yep, VR is great :)

you know what? Walkabout Mini Golf is too damn good. Could easily be called Wii Mini Golf because it hits precisely the sort of simplicity and polish and direct uncompromised fun Nintendo goes for their games and famously the Wii Sports franchise back then - out of which golf was easily my favorite. Well, now I have a favorite pastime in VR that I can easily recommend as a great VR for beginners game (because no nausea, great immersion and totally intuitive) and also for casual fun alike. I can see bored bosses in their offices easily forgoing the old habit of hitting balls into cups for a round into this...

but no big swings here, it's really mini in everything, from the minimalistic controls (trigger brings you near the ball and that's it) to the simple minimalistic graphics that run very smooth. Speaking of controls, just one is used for swinging obviously and besides trigger you can really walk around the environments with analog stick for teleport. That's all.

And it's not just the golfing, the thematic landscapes for the courses are gorgeous and bright and very creatively laid out and really invite for some exploration (there are lost balls collectibles) or simple sightseeing before tackling an awkward angle.

good mini game, I'm not against all specially when terrifically executed like this. I only tried tutorial and a game so far. Trying to get good before trying to play with others actual - not sure about strangers, but must be so fun with distant family members...

Pretty insane how its running

as some recalled, Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 were benchmark games back then, only a few years later replaced by Crysis

of course, they turned off the costly and innovative stencil shadows and there are a few frame drops here and there, but still impressive AF seeing this on a mobile chip in VR! And higher resolution and framerate to boot...

I mean, I'm so old in gaming that I still remember MGS2's breathtaking nextgen graphics...

Asking for some advice from people who are into VR and who own a Quest 2.

The last time I've experienced VR was years ago. I bought the DK2 and while fun the low resolution was obviously the thing holding VR back. That was my opinion anyway.

But now I feel like it's time to jump back into VR and am wondering if the Quest 2 is the right headset for me. Realy want to play Half Life and Boneworks. But also just want to see what other interesting experiences VR now has to offer. Back in the DK2 days everything was just little interesting tech demos. There was nothing more, really.

I have a reasonably powerful PC (1080ti, 3900x 32GB RAM) and will want to play PC VR via the Quest 2. Are there are any hidden gotchas that make the Quest 2 a worse option for PC VR than other stand alone headsets?

And the Quest 2 being stand alone sounds more enjoyable for trying less demanding games and also for watching movies or even porn. Just strap it on, stretch out on the couch and forget about any cables.

To the Quest 2 owners, should I buy a Quest 2 and do you have any regrets/advice for someone who might buy one later today? Is there another headset you wish you bought instead?

Go to to finally play Half Life Alyd on this bad boy.

Single greatest gaming experience of my life. Nothing comes close. This surpassed all of my initial expectations and thoughts of VR.

What sucks is I cant do continuous mode without immediately wanting to throw up. Same with climbing ladders.

Once VR figures out no motion sickness I'll be done with traditional gaming.

I have some bad news for you :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Lol, not quite. Though VR space is crazy full with indie minigames, plain shovelware and my-first-VR experiences, 4 years since those early days has definitely produced some considerable library you may want to check, either hooked to a pc or native Quest - which IMO is the best headset on the market now.

before going straight into Alyx and then complaining that nothing else has its level of polish, build up to it with some of these among others:

Superhot, Moss, Walkabout Mini Golf, Raw Data, Dash Dash World, Apex Construct, SW Squadrons, Battlezone, Dirt Rally, Quake, Doom 3, Skyrim, The Wizards, Myst, Contractors, Pavlov, Population: One, In Death Unchained, The Room, Obduction, Borderlands 2, Rec Room etc

I started on a DK2, too. So you haven't even experienced an Oculus with motion controllers! Huge jump from DK2 to Quest 2. lol
Main thing to keep in mind hooking up Quest 2 to a PC is that there is some added overhead due to the way the Quest 2 works (it has to compress the video stream from the PC and send to the headset). A 1080TI and a reasonably powerful CPU should be enough for a lot of scenarios, but you might be bumping up into framerate issues if you want to run the PC games on high settings. If you have a modern GPU, there isn't really any difficulty running on ultra settings (Im using a RTX 3080). Quest 2 also has a lower field of view than something like a Valve Index, but that's not a deal breaker for me. Resolution wise, it beats most, with the exception of the HP Reverb G2.
That being said, personally, I could purchase any other VR headset if I wanted to, but the added value of being able to play without cables is a HUGE bonus to me. Most of the gaming I do on the Quest is not on the PC (with the exception of Half Life Alyx). Oh yeah, if you have a robust home network, you can play PC games wirelessly on the Quest 2, too using Virtual Desktop.

The motion sickness feeling goes away for most people. For some quicker than others. At this point, there is essentially nothing that will make me feel any kind of motion sickness in VR lol

Thanks for the responses so far. Good advice not just starting with Alyx and being disappointed at almost everything else.

I have a question about battery life and battery packs.

Should I buy the special battery headset or should/can I just plug it into a normal power-bank in my pocket?

If I have the headset plugged into a battery pack can I play indefinitely or will the battery just drain slower?

Are you experienced with VR outside of Alyx? Because that usually wears off.

Just ordered the Oculus Quest 2, Elite headstrap, carry case and link cable.

Ordered direct from Oculus. Some articles say to expect a week or two to deliver, but the Oculus site says it's delivering tomorrow... we'll see.

Hope I like it :)

Hows the battery life on the Quest 2? I'm super interested in wireless VR gaming but if it dies within an hour it's not super worthwhile. Also how well does it work with glasses? I had the CV1 and found it pretty hard to use without my glasses, even with the prescription lens mod it wasn't great.

What helped me in HLA was turning off the camera movement with the analog stick, instead just turn yourself around, after I did that the sickness went away. For ladders you can just hold up on the analog stick while facing it and it will get you to the top without climbing if that is bothering you as well.

Quest 2 is a great headset. Even the wireless desktop feature works great on my Nighthawk X6 router with wired/ethernet PC. I also bought a AkoaDa 20ft link cable that ran at 1.8Gbps on the only USB 3 port I've tried it on. Got a separate 10ft cable at a local store that I use occasionally with a portable battery bank I have. Got some hand grips for the controllers so I don't throw them playing Superhot. I bought the cheapy $13 head strap padding and it doesn't quite eliminate the headset slippage I was experiencing, but it's more comfortable and stable than just the band. I might buy the elite style headset strap, we'll see.

Beat Saber has been the killer app for me so far. I play it nearly daily. Google Earth is a sleeper app that's fun for showing people their old neighborhoods or navigating around a famous city. Another cool app is Immersed, a program that lets you connect to your PC and spawn up to 4 monitors in VR. It's so close to being a fully functional virtual workspace, I just fatigue after about an hour from the weight of the headset and reading text. Quest 3 will probably cross that threshold of offering a viable workspace replacement.

About 2.5 hours, double that it you get the elite battery strap.

The controllers last fucking forever though. I'm still on the batteries they came with, and they're not even close to 50% yet. Bought the headset in November. Meanwhile, my DS4 lasts like 6 hours. Don't know how Oculus did this.

You get a glasses spacer included so you don't scratch the lenses. Haven't tried it though.

I see they have an official lens partner now too. What’s the return period like?

HOLY SHIT it's live..

fucking doom 3 in VR on the quest 2

really intense and awesome

I just ran out of battery while at it.

It's a very dark game but surprisingly LCD dark grays are never really a nuisance because there's lots of lights in corners so it looks deep black by contrast.

IK body did go wonky right when I reached the bathroom and the body was a few steps away from me. Better looking like Dracula with gloves in front of a mirror than those noodle arms.

Anyway, another full game on Quest finally. While I was waiting for it, I also got back to playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein, which has about same graphics from that PS2 generation and same level of care for level design, but not same impressive lighting. That said, it's great to have another old AAA on Quest, though by now these graphics are dated that even indies can surpass them: games like Death Horizon or SW Tales from the Galaxy's Edge have easily better graphics - too bad not nearly as much gameplay and content...

Refunded Galaxy's edge when I heard how long it was. They also played it save with the jetpack mechanics. The core is there, needs like +1 year of development in terms of content.
And standalone Quest2 can be both impressive and surprisingly unimpressive at the same time, detailed guns/characters, but blurry low res textured millennium falcon outside the window.

I think this is a Quest platform hint is why I'm posting it here too. Or maybe just console versions without the VR feature specifically but that seems like a stretch. PC reqs should be super low anyway. Edit: wops, totally missed the Shadowman line, I guess they just mean news on that... Sorry!

This game's for Quest (and PC) anyway :)

I tried out Doom 3 and it is very cool indeed. Question to those that have played longer, how do you set the options. When I go to the options screen, the cursor is almost impossible to isolate to the menu I want to go in to. The cursor hops all around and it's pure luck if I land on VR options.
Also, I want to be able to turn with the right stick as well as my head. Do I turn the quick turn degree down to 1 or 5 to get a less jerky turn?

same problem here about the cursor. I don't think there's head movement by now. Another problem is that i'm left handed, but I would like to move with left thumbstick but also have the gun in left hand. It's not possible...

Only an handful of people worked on this project so we can't just expect perfection.

the problem with the cursor is that it's a mouse cursor that we're moving with our hands. Kinda tricky and annoying, but works. Move the cursor to the edges until you can move better in the other direction is my only tip.

Btw, I had 2 crashes with Imp encounters. I fear the mobile chip is almost frying trying to handle the intense action...

funny, I had 2 crashes with bad framerate in Doom 3 in my first few encounters with Imps and thought Quest just wouldn't handle it. But I'm now battling those rhino-like creeps and even 2 imps at once in larger environments and no frame drops nor crashes. Go figure. Also very impressive physics for a game that old, all objects lying around have physics, in stark contrast to many VR indies...

anyway, Doom 3 totally rocks on Quest. Hope System Shock 2 comes as well. And Respawn might well bring the older Medal of Honor too

Played Doom3 for hour. Amazing. It’s a stunning conversion on the Quest2.

I’ve heard there is a high resolution pack that weighs in at 7Gb. I might give it a go.

I don't think so. It already runs at 60fps with modest resolution to run at all, with occasional frame drops during intense action. Higher resolution textures would be a very bad idea.

I was wondering...has anyone tried playing native quest games on a very large space? I mean very large, like a parking lot or an empty field, while disabling the guardian?

I'm thinking about re-buying some games just to run around like a maniac in some god-forsaken places xD

I could even rent out an industrial space if it works!

I’ve thought about it often but it’s just too cold right now to give it a go. A large sports hall would be ideal.
