Oculus Rift and Touch Thread: I need something more

I have both headsets and I prefer the Vive headset overall, including for comfort with glasses.

hmm I see, thanks. I have a tough decision to make! Vive has the superior tracking system and is a better fit with glasses, yet the Rift has a lot of exclusives and from what everyone says better controllers.

Ugh, unless the Rift feels really horrible while wearing glasses I'm still leaning towards that since I like the look of those Oculus Touch exclusives.

Is there any games out there that use the touch controllers, and actually let you use the joysticks to move? I want to try that out. Maybe there is a Skyrim mod? That would be rad.

Rec room lets you turn around with the sticks. But actually moving like what you're wanting is usually grounds for instant motion sickness.

Not that you can rely on it because it can have issues, but Vive does have the ability to play Oculus games through revive. Again games can flat out not work or be imperfect but the possibility is there.

I don't get motion sickness very easily, so that's why I want to try it.

It seems like Onward and Doom 3 BFG have what I'm looking for. I knew about Onward, but I was looking for something like this Doom 3 mod.

For what it's worth I also have both and I'm selling my Vive because I just find the Rift FAR more comfortable and easier to put on. The Vive is a whole production just to get it on your head and it never sits comfortably for me, plus the cables are much heavier. The Rift just slips on like a baseball cap and the integrated audio is great. The Touch controllers are definitely better than the Vive wands as well.

That said I rarely use it when I have my glasses on, I'll put on my contacts if I'm going to use the Rift. It's not that it doesn't fit over my glasses but it's certainly less comfortable. It's a YMMV thing. There are also custom inserts you can get with prescription lenses. I don't have any experience with those but I know some people in the other thread got them.

Is there a place near you that you can try on the headsets?

Yeah I figured revive wouldn't work with all Rift games, especially the new touch titles that make use of finger gestures, so I probably can't count on that.

I never use contacts, but my glasses frames are pretty small, so it would probably be alright? Would you say if you were forced to use your glasses for the Rift you'd still choose it over the Vive?

And unfortunately no, there isn't any place around here where I could try it, mine would be brought in from outside the country.

In my first week with Rift I was so afraid of scratching the lenses with my glasses that I used contacts, but for some reason contacts gave me nausea inside the Rift (maybe the greater FOV ?). In the end I just said fuck it and used my glasses anyway, no scratches in the last 3 weeks and I don't feel sick anymore.

I was very skeptical about glasses inside the Rift but once I made the right adjustment is perfect (for me at least).

The Rift is totally fine with glasses. I just prefer the build, fit, display, etc. of the Vive. I find it more comfortable with my style of glasses. Your mileage will vary. The Rift controllers are definitely better. No question. My Touch controllers have not shipped yet so my experience was a brief demo a few weeks ago. Most Rift "exclusive" games work just fine with the Vive.

For me:
Headset: Vive
Controllers: Rift
Games: Either, they both have cross functionality
Roomscale: Vive, it goes bigger and costs less

Truthfully, both headsets are killer. You cannot go wrong buying one or the other. I do not regret buying both and would gladly recommend either or both to any interested party.

So maybe I should expand on why I prefer the Vive with my glasses. With the Rift, I put the display side on and stretch the back out and into place. No problemo. When I go to take it off, I usually forget that trying to take the front part off does not work. I can stretch the headset but it's not enough clearance to get over my glasses. It usually digs my frames into my face in a painful manner. I have to pull from the back and lower the front of the headset in a non-intuitive manner. With the Vive, the back is elastic so I can just pop it on or off, like a baseball hat. I also get major light bleed around the nose area on the Rift and zero light bleed on the Vive.

Revive is severely undersold here. It works. EXTREMELY well. With compatibility for touch games, covering the full spectrum of feature support - mapped cleverly onto the wands. And if something doesn't work day one, it's worked out within a day or so typically.

The real deciding factor is that you give up as much intuitiveness with the wands, as you will room scale volume with the Rift. That's the trade-off.

Ok order for my touch is processed. Hope the shipping will not take too long.

Quick quesion : for the majority of experiences are you using touch standing or sitting ?

I use both Vive (at work) and Rift (at home). They both are equally comfortable for my glasses (slim frames I guess), but the when taking off the Rift my glasses tend to stay in the Rift. That doesn't happen with Vive. Overall though I find Rift more comfortable, especially for long periods of time.

So far most of the Oculus Touch games I've played are designed for standing - Superhot, VR Sports Challenge, The Climb, The Unspoken. Medium can be done sitting down, and Fantastic Contraption (though I'm gonna be doing that one with room scale 360 degree walking around once my third sensor arrives tomorrow). Now that I think about it, The Unspoken might be playable sitting down.

I haven't really been bothered about the 360 thing as it feels "enough" just to be able to move about in a space and grab things.

My moveable space is on the smaller side though and I'm still getting used to the idea that so long as I'm not triggering guardian I can leap about and move much more freely than I do.

I could do a diagonal setup but haven't really felt like I need to.

Obviously just one more opinion on the internet :)

Both Vive and oculus are awesome!

The Vive being elastic is why I never get a right fit with it though. I find it slides around my face way too much and it's uncomfortable because of that.

The nose hole on the Rift is a design choice I think, I agree I'd prefer it not to be there but it does actually come in handy for finding things on your desk without taking off the headset.

I do the same with the Rift with glasses. When I have contacts on I put it on back to front like a baseball hat, but with glasses I do the opposite, front to back. When taking it off it's the reverse which I guess is what you do but I don't particularly find it too bad.

I never use contacts, but my glasses frames are pretty small, so it would probably be alright? Would you say if you were forced to use your glasses for the Rift you'd still choose it over the Vive?

Personally yes I'd still choose the Rift but everyone is different. Like I said above I find the Vive never feels secure on my face and I'm constantly feeling the tug of the heavy cables. The Rift has a single light cable and I rarely notice it and the headset just stays in place. My other big issue with the Vive is the lack of integrated audio. I have 2 options, use my regular headphones or use earbuds. For both I hate having to find them and put them on after placing the headset on, it's a chore. Second, if I'm using my regular over the hear headphones I end up feeling like I have too much shit on my head with the headset and then the earphones over the top. If I use earbuds I have similar issues in having to find them after putting on the headset and figuring out left/right plus they're constantly falling out of my ears when playing. Maybe I'm just sensitive to all these little niggles but I always find putting on the Vive is a production, whereas the Rift just slips on and off.

It really should have been something they included, but this is effectively eliminated with a belt clip for the cable. Looping a bit of the cable through a belt loop at your back is a free workaround, albeit not quite as good. The only time I notice the cable on my head is ironically when sitting as the cable can catch on my chair's headrest.

Edit: As for the audio problem, if you use earbuds/IEMs then it's possible to route them permanently down through the loops created by the elastic. Then they're dangling where they need to be after putting the headset on. Just pop them in your ear. In the case of earbuds, they'll even pop out automatically when you pull off the headset. Over the ear headphones, on the other hand, have no good solution with the Vive.

Having to clip the cable just makes putting it on more of a production than it already is though. I'm fortunate enough to be able to get both headsets so I'll just naturally gravitate to the one that is easiest to use. There are so many times I just want to jump into VR for a few minutes and with the Rift it's easy, slip it on and slip it off. The Vive isn't like that, there's all these little hoops I need to jump through just to get it on.

So now that the Touch controllers are out there is really no reason to keep the Vive (for me personally). I would still recommend either headset to anyone.

Personally I'd be clipping the Rift cable as well if I had one, so there'd be no difference to me on that front. Clipping the cable to the back area of the body helps keep it out of the way of moving arms and such. At least with the Rift I can excuse the lack of a clip because it was obviously designed with seated experiences in mind more than anything. That said, I also dislike supra-aural headphones, so I'd be in the same boat with audio using either headset. Practically speaking the only difference for me would be comfort, and that would be a mixed bag since I wear glasses.

So VR Sports Challenge simply doesn't start when I click on it. Anyone experiences anything like that? Tried reinstalling the game

EDIT: Same with Ripcoil

Thanks for the info everyone. Good to hear the Rift is mostly fine with glasses and it seems like really there is no wrong choice between both headsets.

I think it is pretty hard to take peoples opinion on this since it is highly dependent on your head shape and your glasses.

I have both headsets and for me the Oculus is practically unwearable, while Vive is much more tolerable with my current frames. I am actually planning to buy smaller frames in the future. That said since I wear contacts most of the time so I prefer my Rift to my Vive because I find it much more comfortable.

If you have a BestBuy nearby, I would recommend going over there to check it out since many seem to have displays now. You can check online and sign up for a demo to make sure the guy is there.

FWIW you can buy a 3rd party facial interface that supposedly gives you more room for glasses. It hasn't shipped yet so no word yet on how good it works.

If it gets good user reviews I'll probably buy one even though I wear contacts. At the moment I'm too worried about lens scratches to let anyone with glasses try out my Rift.

I've got one of these on the way. Considered the custom lenses from the same people, but figured this way was a bit simpler and also less me-specific. I've used my glasses with Rift before but found it a bit too tight of an experience to be very comfortable. Luckily my vision isn't so bad that going without glasses has been too much of a problem, especially given current resolution limits.

Got my third sensor in a little bit ago. Feels good to be back in a proper 360 degree setup.

With that final piece out of the way, I'm pretty sure I'll be finding a new home for my Vive.

Nice. Still waiting for my 3rd sensor to ship. Although I didn't order one until last Friday.

Whelp, I got five days to experience Touch magic before my headset's IMU decided to shit the bed. It's looking increasingly likely that I'll have a non-working Rift over the holidays. Haven't heard from support since they told me to "allow them some time to look into this on our end" on Tuesday. And reading around it looks like they're backed up with tickets.

Was really looking forward to demoing Touch to people coming over on NYE.

What exactly happened? I 'think' I have that left-leaning issue myself, not enough to completely take away from my enjoyment but it does seem just a little 'off'. I also live in an older house so the upstairs may just have some 'lean' lol.

I ran the IMU calibration thing, let it sit overnight then ran it. I got some random errors I had no idea what they meant but I think it was just the timing call. (it does something every XX seconds and was seeing a 'something not available, trying again' type of message, so I think it's just part of the app running). But it didn't change anything that I can see.

Otherwise everything works pretty great.

This is what my tracking looks like:
https://zippy.gfycat.com/AllIncompleteHen.webm

It doesn't degrade over time. It is that bad from the moment I put on the headset. I'm almost certain it's not the sensors/Constellation; if I keep my head facing forward and still as best I can, and walk in different directions, the positional tracking is fine. If I am stationary with my head still, and move around the Touch controllers, they track perfectly. Things go to shit the moment I try turning or tilting my head in any direction.

I've run that IMU calibration tool and it unfortunately didn't fix the problem. I've run the gamut of troubleshooting (changing USB ports, reseating cable connections, uninstall/reinstall Oculus software and related user prefs, combed through the logs, etc.) and unfortunately have made no progress.

If I had to guess, something is wrong with the gyro in the IMU and it's spitting out incorrect numbers. The jumpiness is caused by the sensors trying reconcile headset position with that corrupt data.

I finished Lucky's Tale and I Expect You to Die today. Both were awesome experiences. I hope there will be sequels to both.

I ordered a HDMI extension cable and a USB extension cable to get some better range on my rift, but it seems my screens keep going on and off when I use them :(

So... this may be because I've just been playing in VR for a few hours, or it may be because it is 4am, but... I just checked a message on my phone and then caaaaaarefully left it on a desk because who knows what could happen if I dropped it inside the desk or something. I wouldn't want to damage my phone! Then I had an "oh wait that doesn't actually happen in real life" moment.

I'm going to bed.

You should use a HDMI to DVI converter. It seems most graphics cards don't have enough power to manage long cables through the HDMI port, but the DVI port is fine.

Hell yes! Thank you very much!

No idea how a 980ti has such a shit HDMI port! I wish it had more than 1 too! Super dumb!

Keep in mind that different companies manufacture the 980ti in different ways. A friend of mine has one with two HDMI ports and problems having both a Rift and two displays plugged in, I have one with only one HDMI port (and 3 Display Ports) but no problems at all with the Rift over HDMI.

Say i will receive my touch and i have only $40 to get game(s) on it for this month. Wich one guys ?
Tough question. I would say Superhot is one of the best examples of Touch gaming (as long as you have enough space for it, I think it recommends a 5x7 foot tracked area), but you only get two or so hours of gameplay out of it your first time through. But, at $25, you could still get a $10-$15 game along with it. If you're into multiplayer shooting duels, The Unspoken is another great Touch game - it's a one-on-one online wizard duel game, purely multiplayer (aside from tutorial/practice) with three classes to play as, costs $30, doesn't require as much space as Superhot (most of the game is standing around and blocking rather than dodging to the side and stuff, you teleport to different standing locations).

Ok thanks seems cool. I'm a bit afraid of the space needed for Superhot but i think i can manage to make some space for it.

After I got over the initial holy shit this is crazy I'm going to vomit movement system of Ripcoil it became the greatest game I've played in VR yet. Played nearly two hours straight in it today.

My thighs hurt, lots of clenching of leg muscles in this game.

hi guys, I don't like doing this stuff but I felt like I should since we're not getting any exposure, but me and a few friends just released our first game. It's in early access right now and called 'Super Island God VR'. It's basically an arcade style god game. It's fairly simple right now and we plan on adding more over the next couple months (polish and bug fixes, more content, sandbox mode). If you like the god-game genre at all I encourage you to take a look, it's on Oculus (and Steam) now and should be on sale. We launched it there with a new holiday update that added two new levels and some decoration and other fixes.

that being said I would like to give away two copies. the first two interested that quote me (you can delete the text if you wish) I will send codes to for the Oculus store.

If any of you play it and have any suggestions or run into any bugs feel free to PM me and I will do my best to see what we can do. hope this wasn't against the rules! thanks for reading.

Ahhh, that makes sense. Glad mine works. Haha.

Lucky's Tale is so underrated it's insane.

It just seems like a boring platformer to me, I must be missing something. What makes it so good?

It may have a slight grindy collectathon to it, and the characters aren't very inspired, but there's some really fun platforming mechanics late in the game and I find the whole thing to be mechanically sound. It's also full a cute VR related touches, like how the characters (especially Lucky) react to you when you look close up, or how you can bump your head into some. There's a really awesome set of levels where your HMD acts as a miners hat with a light on it, and you use your view to light Lucky's path. Another section has you aim your head to toss bombs, and it feels great.

Shit like that.

Considering how most just dismiss this as a mediocre wannabe, I'd say that it's definitely underrated - especially after having finished it.

It's a 6.5-7.0 out of 10. Solid.
