Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

Does it help motion sickness if you get up and walk around - maybe outside and look at something further away? I can imagine it taking a while to recover if you're still just sitting indoors

Ginger helps. It really does. Eat/drink something with lots of ginger.

My rift just arrived but I'm at work so can't check it until later

Congratulations. I ordered mine when they estimated june delivery on their website - 2 days later they changed it to august..

Brutal.

I've just held off all together from ordering because I felt I was too late. But it seems like the more I wait, the further it keeps getting pushed back and back. Too many order.

At this rate, might as well just wait for the consumer version. Lol

Well, I ordered in mid February when the estimate still said April. Now it's almost June and they only just got done with the Kickstarter orders :/

This sort of thing is exactly why I was saying I'm glad I didn't try to wait for a potential version 2 when people were proposing that. :P Once upon a time I think they were trying to get the first units out in December 2012, but that didn't work out.

January order here as well. At least now with the Kickstarter orders done we can really start to look forward for ours Rifts to arrive.

Yep, January here too. They still have the 020XXX 2012 pre-orders before they get to us January's but we can't be far behind now. I think there was only 1-2k of them anyway. I'm hoping for a mid June arrival.

Funny thing is, that's what I was thinking, but then I thought "ok, june is no biggie, and I can get it before the summer" (Wife goes away for a month, need something like this to muck about with..), ...But then Palmer Lucky broke my heart :(

(j/k)

I will probably just be waiting until the consumer version comes out but I am loving everything I'm seeing so far. In terms of games I'd play on the OR, I think pilot based ones will be the most accessible and easiest to fully immerse players in. I think stuff like HL2 and TF2 are still great but when your body isn't moving as you walk/run I'd imagine it can take the buzz out of it.

It's certainly exciting to watch all this stuff coming from this.

First impressions:

Very low res, and while the centre of the view is in focus, if I look up, that area is quite blurry. So you tend to have to move your head rather than looking around with your eyes. I think 1080p will help a lot and is probably a decent minimum for a consumer version.

Tracking is nuts. It's so locked onto your head movement that it feels completely natural

Strafing while wearing the rift isn't a good idea for me.

Little things mean a lot. In minecraft I could look at the edge of a close up block of stone for ages, the edges were so well defined and 'there', and tiny movements of my head helped make it feel even more solid.

I tried a few demos and let my kids have a go too

- Tuscany. Nice and gentle start to get used to the rift. Everyone liked this.
- citadel roller coaster. Lots of fun, really made my stomach go on the big drop. Only real negative here was I wish the view tracked with the cart, but luckily everyone leant into the turns which makes it more fun. I wish someone would patch no limits coaster.
- minecraft. I loaded up our family server and its a lot of fun.. Strangely my daughter didn't like it though, said 'its just minecraft but blurry'. My son and I liked it though. I went into our mine and broke though into a small cave and found a skeleton - man those things are big in the rift - same height as you but they really feel it compared to the normal view. I was weird to look down at my body and see steve's arms right where my real arms were, only holding a sword.
- spacewalk. Liked this a lot and will try it again soon when I've checked out the controls. Very good sense of scale
- blue marble. Very relaxing - could be a good first demo option because you're in a kind of ship I think so, you don't get any issues with motion feeling strange. You need to get some nice classical music to go along with it though.

Will try the sixense Tuscany hydra demo, and Heli hell tomorrow if I can get the hydra set up ok. Bigger stuff like war thunder, doom 3 and HL2 will have to wait until I can get them set up properly.

I thought IZ3d wasn't available for download. Are you saying that it is, beyond the 30 day trial? I thought you couldn't even buy it anymore.

Tere is an abandoned download. I think it still expires (which seems silly) but it works for now. The war thunder rifters are trying to get better support from other methods (or even natively in the game) as soon as possible, so the iz3D is a stop-gap solution

Had a really bad HL2 rift session. Played just 15 mins until I couldn't take it. It's been like 2 hours later and still don't feel the best.

Last night it was ok. I think I played about an hour's worth of demos, TF2, L4D2, and HL2 and just got slightly sick. Maybe I shouldn't have eaten right before playing today?

HL2 on the rift is amazing. I would say more but I don't feel the best. I can't wait till other older games like Fallout get similar treatment (if ever). I have Bioshock Infinite but I'm holding off for official support, if it ever comes.

Also, thanks for everyone in the thread for tips and general advice. I was skimming the thread here and there waiting for my rift to arrive so when it did come I had a general idea of what I wanted to do once it got here from what people were doing and playing here.

Is there any way to minimize the jarring and heavy blurring when turning, especially with the mouse? It feels like you're fine as long as you're standing still and looking around with your head, but when you make a medium to quick turn, it all blurs and feels like the fps went to hell.

Did you make sure to run the IPD calibration on TF2 first, and copy all of the settings over to HL2?

Yeah I did. Using the green line calibration test, I got the following parameters and put them in HL2:
vr_moveaim_mode "3"
vr_moveaim_mode_zoom "3"
vr_moveaim_reticle_yaw_limit "10"
vr_moveaim_reticle_pitch_limit "30"
vr_moveaim_reticle_yaw_limit_zoom "0"
vr_moveaim_reticle_pitch_limit_zoom "-1"
vr_zoom_multiplier "2.0"
vr_separation_user_inches "2.405649"
vr_separation_toein_pixels "0"
vr_hud_max_fov "60"
vr_hud_forward "500"
vr_hud_display_ratio "0.95"
vr_hud_axis_lock_to_world "0"
vr_neckmodel_up "6.5"
vr_neckmodel_forwards "4"
vr_ipdtest_left_t "150"
vr_ipdtest_left_b "705"
vr_ipdtest_left_i "636"
vr_ipdtest_left_o "112"
vr_ipdtest_right_t "98"
vr_ipdtest_right_b "744"
vr_ipdtest_right_i "634"
vr_ipdtest_right_o "59"
oculus_lens_type "A"

It looks great when I'm standing still, and before these settings, the screens were a mess in both games.

Hmm.. played HL2 for 30 mins tonight and no major sickness problems. Weird.

Standing up to play (using a controller) made a big difference in immersion. Moving to a place or turning and moving often made me lose my balance. I bumped into the desk a few times. That didn't happen when I was sitting and playing. Looking around an area in the game standing was also easier since i could just turn around faster and with less trouble than sitting in a chair.

My only complain in standing is using a controller. It feels bulky after getting used to the mouse/kb.

Has anyone used the hydra+rift on hl2 and recommends it?

Damn my Oculus is on the way home.

Monday should be the day.

(order 98xx , Switzerland).

The longest weekend of my life. xD

EDIT: does L4D2 work already?

The mind's ability to adapt is amazing.

It really is. My second go with the Rift was in my gravity demo, and I didn't get the same motion sickness as I did the first time. Even when standing upside-down on a spinning moon orbiting a counter-rotating planet :) Weirdly I did start to feel just a little bit off when walking through a tilted building. I'll give HL2 a shot this afternoon and see how that goes.

How long are people usually in processing? I've been stuck there for a week and a half or so (order #89xx in the US). I have a feeling that the holiday means I won't be getting it next week.

I'm still waiting also. I'm 97xx in Florida and I switched to processing on Monday.

I have heard of people receiving their Rifts while still in processing, so it could already be in the mail for all I know. Maybe it will come Tuesday.

More impressions now that I'm a couple of days in.

Motion sickness has almost disappeared. I just played Mirror's Edge (including probably the worst part of the game, the tutorial level at the start that pulls your view all over the place) with no ill effects. It does take me a few minutes to readjust to reality afterwards, but I wouldn't describe it as feeling ill or anything. This is a big relief - I was seriously worried after my first session that I wouldn't be able to even use the Rift.

I don't feel like anything I've tried yet is a killer app, but I haven't actually tried that much so I'm sure I'll find something that knocks me sideways.

I said in my first post that the screen door/low resolution didn't bother me. Well, it actually really does now. In fact it's my biggest complaint. I'm not sure that 1080p will improve things enough for a consumer version... it might be OK if the screen door effect is reduced though.

My second-biggest complaint is the current lack of positional tracking. It REALLY hurts the immersion factor. I'd say they have to fix this for the consumer edition too, there's just no way around it. I'm sure they will though.

So to sum up, this is basically what everyone else has already said :) If you're not intending to develop for the Rift and just want to see what the hype is about, my advice would be not to buy one but try and find somebody who'll give you a demo. I'm pretty sure you'll come away from it thinking "that's really cool, but I'm glad I didn't pay any money yet".

From a development point of view, I'm not sure what to think. As I said I haven't found anything that really blows me away yet, and that includes the stuff I've been working on myself. I think it's going to take some time for me to think through different ideas and come up with something that's really compelling. The thing that most impresses me conceptually is that guillotine simulator. What a brilliant idea; a powerful experience that can't be had any other way, and incorporates physically arranging yourself in a particular way to get the full effect. But it's just a clever, shocking one-shot and not something that will bring you back time after time.

We live in exciting times :)

How long would it take for a new order to arrive?

I'm halfway considering ordering one, but I wonder if it's worth doing or if I'd be better off waiting for the second dev model.

August.

Bear in mind that 'dev kit 2' was a random dot on a made up slide they did for a hypothetical scenario at a conference. Don't take that as any kind of guarantee of timing, nor that there even is a devkit 2

Anybody got any tips on how to make Doom 3 in the Rift appear slightly less jaggy?

In Half Life 2 I just set the AA to 8x and it seems to do a decent job, but not matter what I try in Doom 3 I can't seem to improve IQ very much.

Otherwise it's a decent experience.

I think my laptop is broken. I'm getting horrible performance out of it. I'm trying out various games in preparation for getting my Rift, so that I know what games and settings I need for the sweet, sweet 60 fps nirvana.

It's got an Intel i7-740QM CPU, 16GB ram and an ATI Radeon HD 5850 GPU. And I'm getting dips to 15 fps in Half Life 2. Even with many effects turned off.

What's going on? Is there an obvious bottleneck somewhere here?

Heat? If it is overheating it will clock down. USe GPU-Z or speedfan to get a reading on your temps.
