Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

Some folks suggest that current consoles aren't powerful enough to run the Rift because they'd struggle with 1080p60, but games such as Batman Arkham City, Crysis 2 and Assassin's Creed 3 all push 3D with a minimal hit to framerate by using "fake 3D", wouldn't it be possible to use a similar solution for Rift on console to reduce the strain on resources?
That faked 3D is garbage on the level of Clash of the Titans 1. That being said, the Rift screen splits into 640x800 per eye and the consumer version might split into 960x1080 per eye, so it shouldn't be much if any more demanding than 1080p 2D.

I got the email yesterday saying it would switch to processing within 24 hours, and it hasn't switched and it's been longer than 24 hours. Noooooo! I'm like a kid before Christmas.

I disagree, I think native 3D games do a better job, but Arkham City and Assassin's Creed look just fine in 3D (though bright scenes in AC3 show terrible aliasing).

I finally got around to trying out VR Cinema...

Wow. I could seriously watch all of my movies like this. It really does give you the sense that you are in a theater, and the screen looks absolutely massive. I cannot fucking wait to let my friends/the wife try it out.

I hate that it took me this long to download it. Holy shit it's awesome.
I've yet to try the big AAA games (downloading HL2 now) but from the various demos I have tried (Tuscany, Rollercoaster, Guillotine, Blue Marble) then the VRCinema is without a doubt the most impressive one.
I have *never* been more impressed with any computer software in my life.

HL2 is amazing once you get it properly calibrated. It really is amazing... but this VR Cinema takes about 3 seconds to get up and going, and the scale is just perfect. It's really amazing. The creator apparently has an update coming very soon that will support more formats and allow you to dim the lights, etc.

would be neat if you could stream your browser or desktop on the cinema screen. Watching online with others some youtube or legal Series Streams.
Or watch live streams :)

The next-gen consoles should be more than fine however. The PS4 especially should have enough grunt for it as they are apparently 'pushing' devs towards 60fps (the PS4 GPU has 32 ROPs for pumping out pixels fast, twice that of Xbone).

It's certainly not impossible to do, imo. But yes, that would be very cool.

PS4 would be perfect with its open platform for Indi Devs. Maybe big AAA titles with super Graphics are hard to port for OR but Indi games like Among the Sleep would work perfect.
And PS4 Eye + Move would help too, maybe not the ultimate best motion controllers but sth. all devs could work with.

edit: maybe the PS4 to X1 difference is enough to make X1 like Graphics for PS4 in 3D. With 50-60% more power, maybe?

My office got ours in the other day. Watching the world around you move without actually moving your body is the most disorienting thing ever.

Half-life 2 question:
The game is booting in vr mode (I have launch parameters set to '-vr dxlevel 110') and now I want to add all the attributes to config.cfg.

I open Wordpad as an administrator, locate the files and paste all the TF2 attributes and save.
I close Wordpad. Just to make sure it saved I re-open the file again and I have a look and my new vr attributes are there, saved properly.

I then start the game but the nothing has changed, just a crude untweaked stereo view. Checking the config file again the game has deleted all of my new attributes.

Anyone have a solution to this?

Well that's a simple way of doing it.
Game goes black now though after the Valve logo. At least the config file remains intact.

edit: for some reason the ending " to all my values changed to '?'. Editing...

2nd edit: Got it working. Worth nothing as well that the first few seconds where Gman is informing you looks bad but once you gain control the view looks much better.
I need to tweak a lot though currently, too busy right now.

If Sony announces support for the Oculus Rift, it would cement my day one purchase.

Now that I think about it. If a theoretical Playstation branded Oculus Rift had a LED light, simular to the Dual Shock 4. It would allow the PsEye to track the Rift along the Z axixs in 3D space.

Microsoft said they're going to surprise us at E3. Xbox One having something good attached to it would be a real surprise.

I put all my vr settings in an autoexec.cfg. Haven't had any problems with it.

Have been using my Rift for a week solid now. Will be blogging in detail about it this weekend now that I feel I have formulated some worthwhile opinions. Basically though, the tl;dr before I have even written anything is: "f*cking awesome".

Have been dividing my time between Half Life 2, Dirt 3, Outerra (flying the Mig jet) and Skyrim.

Being a big driving fan, I think Dirt 3 might be my current game of choice... it works pretty flawlessly with the latest Vireio driver, and opentrack+hydras for the full 6DOF head tracking whilst in cockpit view. Just a totally mind blowing experience, sliding the rally cars around, over-steering a bit and then looking out your side window as you are going sideways! Collisions with the tyre barriers send tyres flying onto and over your bonnet, looks brilliant. Sense of depth and scale once configured is incredibly immersive.

EDIT - I want to sell my Team Fortress 2 hat code that I got for being a Kickstarter, I haven't redeemed the code yet, anyone know the best place to advertise it? I don't think ebay allow seeling of 'codes'. And most TF2 forums/subreddits also disallow it.

how was setting up Dirt 3? Some games seem like a right PITA, but the list I want to try is getting longer:

- HL2
- Dirt 3 (and grid if possible)
- War Thunder
- Doom 3

I've had mine for a couple of weeks now and while it is indeed cool some of the hyperbole about it is a little crazy. I knew the resolution wouldn't be great but the blur and screen door effect is pretty bad. I love the potential, but I kinda wish I had waited for the consumer version.

Can't you just resell it? They seem to be quite high in demand.

Setting up Dirt 3 was very simple. A lot easier than some of these F1 2012/Warthunder guides currently doing the rounds (no messing about with installing TriDef and no need to do all the fiddly Oculus Overlay stuff, which had the added bonus of meaning your game runs a hell of a lot smoother, I am maintaining 60fps+ at all times at 1080p, downscaled to the Rift for some nice IQ improvement).

Basically:

  • Download the latest Vireio beta from the mtbs dev thread, normally linked in the OP
  • Download the latest Opentrack build (the one with hydra support if you want to use Hydras as well)
  • Run Vireio and choose 'no tracking' from the drop down menu (this is done by Opentrack).
  • Run Opentrack, make sure it it set to 'Freetrack 2' and click start
  • Run Dirt 3

Optionally:

  • Use the EGO Engine FOV editor to set all the cars in Dirt 3 to use a 90 deg FOV, otherwise it will seem zoomed in too far when sat in cockpit
  • In Dirt 3, turn shadows down to their lowest setting to stop the flickering.
  • If playing on a 1080p monitor like me, set your graphics res to 1080p, aspect ratio to 16:10. This will remove any warping of the image when you roll your head sideways

That's it. Took me all of 5 minutes to do this. I can now load up dirt 3 and be racing in less than a minute and it all works flawlessly.

EDIT - running on a 2500k @ 4.5, GTX580, 8Gb rig. By no means cutting edge anymore, but decent. The solid 60+fps obviously makes a huge difference to the experience.

I feel the same except for the waiting for the consumer version part.

Can't say they didn't warn you. Should have only bought it if you can easily live without 300 bucks and just wanted a taste of what's going to come.

Got my Rift a couple of days ago. Pretty surreal, but I can't seem to get over my nausea... any tips? Will I acclimatize if I do small daily doses?

I've had plenty of opportunity to play around with it, I have to say the experience is to a very high degree dependent on the system you're running it on. I've had both good and poor experiences in the same demo on different machines.

I'm glad we'll be upgrading ours in the office in a couple of weeks. Should be good to go for some awesome RIFT demo's.

I'm really pleased this has turned out so well, I'm definitely going to pick up a retail unit whenever that happens.

I think a rift type solution for next gen consoles is really exciting but I wonder if either console manufacturer will be happy for that solution to be the rift itself, Sony have traditionally been more open to this kind of thing but it's also worth remembering that they have their own (albeit shitty) headset. MS have just been really shitty with keeping the Xbox locked down in general.

I hope it does happen on at least one of the consoles though, I don't really have a PC gaming set up any more.

Today is finally the day. I guess the first thing I should do is find my IPD in TF2 and then copy that over to all other demos, right?

I can't decide what to try first: TF2 (since I'll have already booted it for the IPD test), the Rollercoaster, or Blue Marble. I've got just about every game with even nascent Rift support loaded on this machine and ready to go (Skyrim, Mirror's Edge, Minecraft, etc).

I got the email yesterday saying it would switch to processing within 24 hours, and it hasn't switched and it's been longer than 24 hours. Noooooo! I'm like a kid before Christmas.

Mine took slightly longer then 24 hours to change. It then took 6 days for my rift arrive.I'm in the UK.
Good luck on yours arriving soon.

I've had my Oculus 5 days now.

Though I'd mentally prepared myself for the resolution and the screen door I was still a little disappointed when I first put it on. I found the head tracking excellent from the off.

However, the more I use it the less I notice it.

When I first got the Rift I spent a fair bit of time looking around not moving to stave off motion sickness. After I started moving around I never felt sick but it gave me more of a light-headed and tired sensation.

After 5 days I'm much more accustomed to it now. Yesterday I played Half-Life 2: Lost Coast whizzing around shooting, strafing, with no ill effects whatsoever. When you play and move around more the poor resolution is less of a problem then when you're staring motionless at a wall or table or whatever.

I think my favourite demo is First Law -- the prototype space sim. The feel of sitting in the cockpit with the asteroids slowly spinning by is ace. As a backer of Star Citizen I really hope they can put some effort into their Rift support: ie. making the HUDs large and clear, finesse the controls etc.

I've been waiting for decent home VR since Forte's VFX-1 was all over the gaming press in the early 90s. It's majorly exciting to play with the dev kit even with it's limitations.

I'd start with blue marble and tuscany, nice and gentle to get your bearings. Then rollercoaster, VR cinema, then minecraft.

Leave fiddling with settings until a bit later. Those above all work pretty perfectly out of the box

I was under the impression that an incorrect IPD setting would look pretty off-putting; Is that not the case? I guess it wouldn't hurt to try Blue Marble with the default IPD and then adjust it if need be.

I'm currently reading and highly enjoying Ready Player One (already a modern classic apparently, released a couple of years ago winning heaps of awards). This might seem kinda OT but the book revolves around a virtual world called OASIS which you access using an Oculus-Rift like device + gloves. While the story is set in 2044 the console (PC) powering the VR kit has different graphics capabilities depending on the quality of the hardware. The main characters unit for example displays graphics fairly realistically but not quite.
Seeing how incredibly believable VRCinema is on Oculus Rift I practically believe the future VR tech described in this book is already here!

Anyways, I highly recommend the book to my fellow Rifters and I believe that if a capable MMO studio built a virtual world purely for Oculus-Rift named OASIS and with rights from the writer/publisher... I believe that would be a killer app.

I would 100% not try TF2 first. It's a fun experience, but imo not the best thing to begin with. I would try the following first:

Tuscany first. Do the latest SDK demo, it has a much higher FOV and sense of scale. And force it to 1080p if your computer can handle it.

After that I would try the VR Cinema.

From there... Blue Marble and the roller coaster.

You should have a really good time with it.

Yeah, I'll probably sale it and put the money back for the consumer version.

That was my justification for pre-ordering one last night on impulse.

I figured I can tool around with it for a month or so and then pass it a long to someone else looking to do the same and only be out the price of a game or so.

I doubt I'll ever be able to sell mine. I kind of look at it as a piece of history. While not the first HMD, it is the first HMD that is [hopefully] the catalyst to a wonderful VR movement that the 90's failed so terribly at doing.

I really just want to use the TF2 IPD test to figure out my IPD so that everything else is optimized for my eyes. I'll probably just try Tuscany for starters and then move on to Blue Marble. I hope to have tried Mirror's Edge by the end of the day, as long as I'm not finding myself nauseous doing less strenuous things in the Rift. I've never been motion sick a day in my life though, so I've got high hopes.

Yeah but $300 is a pretty expensive "history piece" item to just let sit on a mantle.

I'm sure I'll be able to pass it along and only be out $50-$70 or so. Which is cool.

Someone should just rent these out by the weekend. :)

I mainly wanted it for when a friend is visiting the first week of September.

I really want a rift but part of me is saying to hold out for the consumer model. But it's getting a lot of support already and some games I really wanna try out for it
