Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

Hey folks, I just released a game/demo for the Rift this morning. It's a 70s-themed motorbike jump "sim" called Jump Star VR, set as the motorcycle stunt craze was at its height. It's an attempt to provide an experience you couldn't get without the Rift (unless you happen to have been a superstar stuntman in 1976).

Let me know what you think! There's a readme in the rar file that explains the controls but it should be easy to figure out. It plays best with a controller but works with the keyboard too.

Oh and it's a bit unusual in that you don't launch it with your Rift already on... have it close by and just follow the prompts :)

Download (Windows) Mac version coming soon!

I've never worked so hard on anything that provides 10 seconds of gameplay before :)

Will check it out. First thing that springs to mind is that a motorcycle game could be perfect for hydra support - twist right hydra for throttle...

Hey guys, I have no idea if this means anything, but those of us stuck in customs, check your UPS tracking. Mine still only says "06/21/2013 Shipment information received by UPS Mail Innovations", but the difference is it said "05/28/2013" the entire time before that. Again, no idea if this means anything, but it's at least a change?
Mine still says "05/09/2013 Shipment information received by UPS Mail Innovations" and has said that for probably a month or more.

*edit* I just checked it tonight and it says " 06/17/2013 Shipment information received by UPS Mail Innovations ". I don't know whether to trust it though, just seems weird.

Man. I don't know if I can wait that long. I might have to shell out for a dev kit version.

What do you think the likelihood is of a devkit 2.0 version coming along?

Can't say for sure, but from what I've heard Oculus say so far, probably not. Sounds like the just want to get the consumer version made as soon as possible. They'll probably give certain developers access to early runs of the consumer version to polish and integrate any positional tracking solution, etc. in the months prior to wide release.

Yeah that crossed my mind too :) I don't have a Hydra to implement it though. It would also be perfect for whatever form of positional tracking they eventually get in... lean in the correct direction to shift your weight on the bike.

Looks really cool, too bad I don't have a Rift :(

Looks awesome dude. I don't have my Rift yet (DAMN YOU CUSTOMS) but I'll add it to my massive collection of demos that have been waiting on my hard drive for months.

At the top of the list I assume :)

You can play it anyway :) It'll run without the Rift, you just have to deal with the split screen. I played it like this all the time while I was developing it.

Yea, order 438xx in SoCal. My hopes have risen from the reports of US pre-orders finally starting to ship, but it looks like people on the back end of the batch (~48xxx) are the ones that have been shipping so far. Hoping that they are just unloading them from the truck in reverse order or something...

It came!! Order 43xxx to Japan. Came via Hong Kong post/EMS. Had to pay an additional 900yen (~$9) tax/customs fee on delivery. I actually just got the shipping notice from Oculus the same morning it arrived.

I was really hoping to get it before my vacation started. I have all next week to play with it now.

the is the future right here.

I don't have my Rift yet, but I fired this up. Very nice demo! I tried about a dozen times but I couldn't land it. I love the voice in the background, is that you?

It took a few tries, but I finally landed it. 2889 was my score for anyone who is interested in trying to beat that (I'm sure it's not hard!).

I'd happily play a game like this with more bike choices, more stunts to try, and so on. I could even see it being developed into a product I'd pay for.

Haha, yes it is! I just put on my cheesiest accent and used lots of EQ and it seemed to work out OK. I sound like this normally :)

I feel a bit unlucky to be in the Twilight Zone of stuck orders. :( 44xxx still says "06/17/2013 Shipment information received by UPS Mail Innovations" and "PROCESSING". So they're 3000-4000 orders behind it would seem due to the customs thing.

Same...I'm 46xxx and am stuck in the same place. What's really frustrating is that they update with stuff about E3, etc. But not about the shipments that got set to processing over a month ago.

Sweet :) Thanks for trying it out, really glad you liked it. The scoring isn't very transparent but you get marked out of 1000 for each of: distance over 315ft, perfect pitch angle for the part of the ramp you land on, roll angle (zero being best), yaw angle relative to the ramp, and distance from the centerline.

I have a plan for the game if I keep working on it (which I'd like to) which would be a kind of career progression, starting from jumping milk crates on a pedal bike. This demo would probably be the last level or something, but I wanted to make the splashy extreme experience first.

Do the order numbers in the forty thousands signify that at least that many have been ordered so far?

No. The first couple of digits represent which group of orders you're in. 00s, 20,000s, and 40,000s have large gaps between them. I think the actual number of orders is somewhere around 20,000.

That's what's frustrating to me. Lack of news, okay if it's for everyone. Not shipping, okay if everyone in the U.S. is stuck. But for there to be OTHER news, and have other people who ordered 2-4 months after me getting their orders in the same country if that's what's happening? You would think they could at least shift things around and give the people who supported earlier the earlier orders. :(

Are HL2\Doom3 the oldest games supported? I'm curious to know if there's an 'uncanny valley' equivalent for VR. Is it harder to keep the illusion and immersion in graphically outdated games? Are current games with inconsistent graphic fidelity snap you out from the experience if you are suddenly confronted with bad texture work and the like?

Minecraft apparently has great scale and is a decent experience with the fan mod, so possibly not.

consistent quality and style seems to be all thats needed. not many modern games have the quality of support those two games do though yet.

was the shipping $50 US?

I don't have a Rift. Probably won't dive in until I get a new gaming rig. I downloaded your demo and played it anyway. A lot of fun! I loved driving around the track (until the collision stopped existing :p).

You got something very cool there ;)

completely geared up with treadmill, gloves, goggles, sensors, penisadaptors and what not is going to cost fuckloads of money. thousends of dollars

but at the same time be fucking awesome, truly game changing stuff.

holodeck awesome.

wonder if this sorta thing will see the return of the arcades.

This is cool too

DayZ Standalone about Oculus Rift support

I think with pCars, Star Citizen, DayZ and whatever Valve is doing Oculus has already a good amount of popular really coregames supporting it. And there is ALOT more stuff coming in 2014

@Exeunt, yeahe i think there are many possibilities to make it quieter. The running part is already way way more quieter than on the Omni. For the four pillars, or whatever they got called, you could use better stuff at the end. Maybe sth. like rolls e.g..

Yeah, I'm not going to judge the prototype for its noise level just yet, but it's something for them to consider. I'll be keeping my eye on this for sure. Omni does look pretty good in my eyes, but it definitely has some shortcomings that could be addressed by designs like this.
