Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

Try closing your eyes briefly while turning to avoid that while you get used to it. I quite like experiences where my head also affects where I walk, so I can just walk forward and turn by moving my head. Feels more natural. Movement from keys without a physical movement from my head/body makes me feel a bit odd but not immediately

Just played HL2 for nearly two hours with no ill effects. Started where I stopped from feeling queasy. Very strange. Hopefully that won't ever happen again. Just reached Entanglement, and now I'm going to make myself some food before going back in.

The coaster demo is probably the worst thing to start with, it almost slayed me. I had no problems with the other ones though, walking and looking quickly does not affect me really - which I did not expect.

That sounds like really good news to me. It's quite encouraging to see Valve supporting the Rift, presumably thanks to their prior HMD experimentation.

Source, Unity and UDK. Three of the most important Engines now support OR.

I hope HL3 will come around at the end of 2014-2015 with native OR support and the best modding tools ever created.

In the short term, it also means that the Half-Life 2 VR mod that everyone's raving about will be able to integrate the native support from Valve and likely become an even cooler experience.

So what sorts of PC's are y'all running? What should somebody who wants to jump into the Oculus Rift experience head-on when the consumer version is released be thinking about when building a new PC?

Consumer version will likely have 1080p support, and maybe somewhere around 1440p if all goes well enough, as in the tech gets there by then. It isn't rendering two 1080p screens but two screens from a 1080p source, so I suspect you'd want a machine capable of running your favorite game at at least 60 fps and 1080p.

This part from Anti-Citizen One was fricking AWESOME. The ant lion parts were cool in Nova Prospekt, but the other parts were kind of eh. Not too tense, so not so cool. Tension seems to make the Rift sing more than anything else.

SDK support is amazing news. I haven't played Dear Esther, but I have it. I've been waiting and hoping. Fingers crossed it happens now.

And Left 4 Dead? Left 4 Dead 2? Come on Valve!

But what will PC games require in a year? What will be supporting Oculus Rift by that time?

Obviously these are questions that are up-in-the-air, but I was wondering what you guys are working with, as I know y'all have some experience as to what sort of games work well and what don't. Whach y'all recommend? At the moment, I'm looking at an i5 3570 processor and a 7950 or 760 vidya card.

I just built a new PC with an i5 3570k and nVidia 770. I imagine with the 7950 and 3570k you'd be quite well off and cheaper than the 770.

I can't imagine that part of the Dear Esther ending with the rift.

MASSIVE SPOILERS:

fuck you, either you know I am talking about or you tried to spoil yourself.

Are dev kits still available for order?

The last batch of Rifts is stuck in customs limbo, so if you order one, don't expect to get it for a few months.

There's a lot of talk about a Dev Kit 2 that has an HD display, you might want to hold off and see if anything is announced officially if you can wait.

So it looks like Sixsense has finally confirmed that they are bringing out a wireless motion tracking system sort of like the Razer Hydra. Nifty. I wonder how they will compare to the current wired versions of their tech out there now? The design of the controllers also resembles those modded Tactical Haptics Hydra controllers from GDC. I wonder if that means force feedback integration will be in them as well?

Okay, and was just about to pull the trigger too, thanks for the headsup.

Whats the general concensus on the dev kit so far?

So far it seems like it depends on the person.

Some say it's like playing games again for the first time and it's revolutionary, other people can't play for more then 5 minutes without getting sick. lol

Intriguing!

The wires aren't the problem, lack of game support is the problem.

Portal 2 is the only game I've been able to play comfortably. The emulated mouse movement in FPS games is so wonky that I can't play effectively.

I totally love it. I'm not even bothered by the low resolution, it's a completely new way to experience games and playing HL2 on this just blew me away. The feeling when you stand in front of a person in this game is crazy.

Isn't a controller preferred for this since the analog movement is better suited for precise and slower movement over a keyboard?

This is probably why I'm just going to wait for the consumer version which will be 1080p or possibly even 1440p. I'm sure it's cool now but I want to really be blown away when I try it for the first time. :D

I should have said that I don't have my Rift yet, my experience with the Hydra has been in standard games. If I were to play a game with controller support, I would use a controller. If I were to play a game with mouse+keyboard support, I'd use a mouse+keyboard.

I got the Hydra for all of the weird demos people are making and for Portal 2, so I'm getting my money's worth, I just wonder what the their gameplan is when Valve is the only company that is even giving them a passing glance when it comes to integration.

I was on the fence and I'm going to wait for the next Dev Kit. imho, the HD display it's worth the wait

I don't know, maybe I'm weird but I really wasn't bothered by the resolution. Sure the resolution could be better but the experience is something more than the sum of its parts. Everyone I've shown it to so far has been blown away. But now that they've already shown a 1080p version waiting for a dev kit 2.0 or the customer version may actually be feasible.

wireless sixense looks interesting. Press release mentions supporting three controllers, but the picture only shows two big Space 1999 blasters. Unless..that little 'STEM' is a clip on controller for personal movement tracking....would clip nicely onto a belt or rift headset..

That'd be my guess too. Very, very interesting.

wow there are alot of buttons oO

Hope Oculus has sth. to say about this. Not that i buy this and at the end Oculus brings his own motion controller x.x

Heh, so it did end up happening—just without Razer. Weird timing, but this is good!

This being announced as a "dev kit" seems to leave things open for conversations with Oculus regarding the final product. At least I hope so anyway.

This looks much more ergonomic than the hydra design. If latency isn't an issue anymore I'll actually be interested in it now pending support

The buttons need to be addressed for Rift support though, each one needs to be able to be uniquely identified by touch, and perhaps condensed, more like a flight stick. This effectively has more buttons than the wireless hydra, but with less clutter, and there's no way to mistake them once you learn them

I hadn't even noticed that clip-on controller thingee in that picture of the new Sixense motion controller. That would be neat if they used it for personal movement tracking. I agree that many things could be addressed with this new set-up. I hope they put in the time and effort to make it a worthy revision.

There is some speculation on the official Sixense forums that some of the developments made with this new controller may be backward compatible with the wired Hydra version as well-
"... will include fully playable controllers compatible with games and applications developed for existing Sixense-powered products, including the Razer Hydra."
But wouldn't that clip on personal tracker make things very different between the two?

It would be cool if head tracking was done via Sixense's tech and not with the help of the inertial sensors. Even though you would need that magnetic field generating base thing...

Yeah this has been my reasoning as well. But if the Oculus development kit 2.0 has an 1080p screen.... I may just have to bite the bullet and order it.

You could build similar tech into the control box, perhaps.

That could be a good idea.

I literally jumped when I saw it!

Customs delay is OVER!

OMGOMGOMGOMGOGMOGMOMGOGMOGMOGOGMOMGOGOMGOGOGOGMO

This is kind of funny to see after sending an email earlier asking if I can get a refund since we don't know when the customs issue would be resolved.
