Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

Well, although "same technology" is quite ignorant, it is indeed a cheap option to get a grasp on relatively high fov stereo imagery.

By definition every vr headset consists of a display(s) / lens combination and some sort of headtracking. So one could say that the VFX1 is the same as a Rift. Which it obviously isn't. VR is more of an evolution than a rocket sciene involving revolution.

Actually it's not high fov with that setup. The biggest distinction with the rift is that it uses modern tracking and display technology.

This will be fantastic for flight simulators (fast-paced action ones especially). The one issue I always had with flight sims was that moving your head freely never felt natural. You had to struggle with some key+mouse combination, or use that small pad thing joysticks have at the tip.

With this, you can fly your plane/spaceship and look around at the same time. It should be amazing and feel natural.

No official support yet, but I read somewhere the developer ordered a Dev kit:

Pretty convincing posh English accent actually. Only spotted a few mistakes, biggest one was saying can't with the US pronunciation, rather than 'carn't' :P Work on that for next time :)

Speaking of can't, I can't wait for this to come out to retail, think its going to be insanely massive. None of the new consoles excite me very much, this to me is really next gen.
Thanks! I'll keep working on it. = D

Strike Suit Zero will get Rift support ASAP.

Well palmers version, which the first one you linked is based on, has a fov of ~50° which is obviously much more than the common home setup delivers.

I'm trying to hold back and wait for the final version, but it's sooo hard :( Will the release version be around the same price tag, and will de dev kit be updated with new features the final version might get?

I think they will be aiming for a similar price tag, they want it to be affordable.

I'm order # 151 and mine still says "Processing" :(

Don't worry, this is what the first guy that reported having received the rift said on reddit:

[–]jayoh 6 points 1 hour ago
none. still says "processing" on the site. of note is that it came from CA, a ups ship center.

Was there any comment on integration of the Rift with any of the new consoles?

It begins! When did you ordered your one?

I'm order #403.

Apparently they have not updated anyone's order status to shipped or sent out any tracking info yet but people are receiving them. I got an alert from UPS last night that a 6.4lb package originating in Orange County would be delivered today and I've confirmed with other people with a low order number that it is the Rift.

Impossible to know. Palmer has said in at least one interview that he wants the consumer model to be cheaper, but it's going to be highly dependent on what comes out of feedback from the devkit, what kind of deal they can get on screens when they finally build the consumer model, etc.

It's clear, though, that the consumer model will definitely be the one to get when it finally arrives, just for the lighter weight and better screen tech. If you aren't comfortable with plunking $300 down on a piece of hardware that is going to be smoked by the consumer model, I'd avoid.

Holy shit my Rift is out for delivery right now.

Woo-hoo!

It's happening. omg.
I don't even have one preordered, but damn, I can't wait to see, hear, read from people using them.

You can change the optics and get it up to 90. Im waiting for comparisons with the real rift and people will probably figure out a way to hack something similar that's good enough for tinkering around with. Then I'll just wait for the retail version of the rift.

We could have impressions any minute now!??!?!?!

TF2 Rocket by your face first, tell us if you survive.

I'm stuck at work and UPS almost never gets to my neighborhood before 6pm anyway so it's probably going to be a while unfortunately :(. I'm definitely going to go home at lunch and if it's been delivered I'll may come up with an excuse to be out for the rest of the day.

Yup, seems he got it :D

LOL, yeah I know that feel. I built a computer around christmas time and UPS ALWAYS delivered my parts past 9pm for me :(

I only thought they would ship Rift's today, not deliver, so this will be an exciting weekend for sure.

hey guys, got sucked into the world of tf2 for a while.

initial thoughts: wow.

initial more in depth thoughts: screendoor and resolution are noticable. however, once you start playing a game your brain does meld it away. kind of uncanny in that regard.

taking small bursts in, 5 minutes/10 minutes tops to avoid any motion sickness. taking a break. still investigating settings, controls. went hdmi, and duplicated my display. tf2 i had to force into fullscreen everytime i open it.

the 3d is so subtle, you don't even notice it. quite amazing, just adds to the overall presence/experience.

ITS HERE FOLKS, I CANT WAIT FOR EVERYONE TO HAVE THEIR OWN!

Holy Shit, I just got mine! Watch this space!! Order #309, live in Salt Lake City!

/passes out

Edit: Oculus VR Order page never left 'Processing' status, it just showed up! /head explodes!!!

Decided to hold out until the consumer version. I'm excited to read your guys impressions over the next few weeks as more software becomes available.

I must be one of the few people who was a bit underwhelmed after all the hype this was getting. The response was pretty good, but man the refresh rate bugged me and I was starting to get a bit of motion sickness because of it. I never get motion sickness for anything, especially games. I just sort of expected the experience to be more than it was based on all the hype. I understand that this is a dev kit build and not the consumer version but it felt to me like it still needs more time. Either that or Hawken is a bad demo to show it off.

Kind of why I've prevented myself from ordering the developer version. I just remain skeptical how ready it is right now (and flaws are more easily forgiven in a short demo).

What was it about the response rate? Not just the smearing of the screen? It sounds more like your brain was reacting to the lag between the motion and screen response. Which is something that's almost as important with the consumer version upgrade as the expected upgrade to 1080p.

I do feel like some are going to be disappointed long term because a lot of the hype is based on the potential of where this is going. And the dev kit, flaws and all, is more than good enough for that (since a dev tool just needs the basic framework to start producing content).

Mine just arrived. For the record, I was order #212. I'm in Boston, so I was worried they'd ship it some method that would take a while to get here. Fortunately, it's 2nd day air.

Now I just need the day to end so I can go home and try it out.

It's nice to know that even though I'm a high number, I won't have to wait for days while the package slowly winds its way to me over land.

Anyone twitch streaming or anything yet?

I just experienced the Tuscany demo and promptly shat myself! I cannot believe how this thing literally transports you to another place!!

If you've got the Rift dev kit, download the Tuscany demo and have it be the first thing you experience!

Oh and put on some music, as the demo has no sound.

Note: Many of you will want to wait for the consumer version, as the resolution is VERY low and the screendoor is in full effect here! Apart from that, the future just started today!

/plugs back in

Will have more later!! /BOOM

I just hope this is the beginning of a wave of first person exploration and adventure games, and even a shift in focus from combat to other things. The Witness looks like it could be just amazing with this thing.
