I am officially commissioning any indie dev to create the ultimate VR game simulation of the real fantasy role play tabletop session.
![]()
The main point of the game is that is as close to real life, meaning, game does not need to calculate ANYTHING regarding to the player stats, combat mechanic or anything else. Just enable players write, move objects, throw dice and talk to each other. Oldschool FRP sessions always were and they will always be the best!![]()
- Players are stationary, sitting in the chair in front of a table, so there will be no motion problems, and 2 hydras will work great for manipulating objects.
- Each player has pencil, set of dice, character SHEET, maybe BOOK or two, generic figurine [or a simple token] representing his character, and a sheet of paper for random doodling. Pencil and dice can be magically summoned into the hand of the player with the press of the hydra button, for simplicity sake.
- GM has same, but with more tokens, protective screen, more books and tokens
- SHEETS are chosen before the session starts, there a lot of non-official char sheets on the web.
- BOOKS are procedurally generated by telling the game which PDF file to use to create those books (this way, players can play anything they want).
- As for visuals, only table, users and objects on it need to be rendered nicely, the rest is irrelevant (empty holodeck, generic nature, modern FRP establishment, fantasy inn, etc). Lets say 10 normal looking male and female avatars should be enough (no need for fantasy/SF/horror avatars yet).
Add save/load capability, and the users can start playing ANYTHING they want, yell at each other at will, GM can control the game however he wants (lie), dice rolls will be real, etc. Sky is the limit.
Even rudimentary version of this VR game with simple graphics [or a small scale 2 player "TCG" version that could generate only user generated deck of cards, tokens and dices] could provide countless amounts of fun. True VR sandbox.
Card and DND games would be very heavy on the reading though, which is currently one of the things the Rift is worst at. Maybe with the consumer version.

Wow has anyone on here tried this? Looks cool!!!!!
What is the current order backlog looking like if I were to place an order today? Sudden influx of $900 and it's burning a hole in my pocket![]()
So whats all available that you can play currently?
I'm really tempted to get one now that orders are arriving sooner and sooner (originally was going to wait for HD version).
woohoo, my game Elevator Music came in third in the VR jam!

Slender: The Arrival now has native rift support, anybody given this a go? : D

Congrats!
Impressive. I wonder how many entries they had?
now that it's a <1 month wait it's tempting..
When wearing the Oculus Rift, your eyes are covered and it is impossible to see even nearby objects. So when youre looking for something like your mouse or keyboard, you have to take off your goggles.
But now with the use of the Vision Sensor, you can be freed from the hassle of constantly putting on and taking off the Rift in order to see whats in front of you. A simple swinging gesture from your hand in front of the camera will activate a sensor. With that easy movement, your current display will be replaced with a view of the real world.
I noticed a new crowd funded camera attachment for the Oculus dev kit. Anyone else thinking about ordering this? You apparently can swipe your hand over the camera to swap out the game view with your real world surroundings so you don't have to remove your headset. It's called the "Vision Sensor"

It also will include development software to create AR games with it. They are asking 100 bucks for it, but I'm kinda skeptical about the risk associated with crowd funding.
I was off-put buying one months back when it was a multiple month wait after ordering but now that it's a <1 month wait it's tempting..
I'd love to pick one up if the Consumer version is a year+ away (can easily see delays happening) but I'd regret it if it comes out in the summer. Tough decisions..
Your Oculus Order is About to Ship
You're receiving this email because your Oculus order will be advancing to "Processing" status in the next 24-48 hours.
I think it's still a 6 weeks+ wait. I hit my month on the 28th and still have not heard anything.
I've...I've got this Oculus Rift just sitting here gathering dust if you really want to rid yourself of that $900.
jk. Sort of. Not really. Would totally accept your monays.
I would wait, honestly. It's cool, but the experience right now is mostly waiting for the next tech demo, trying it, being all "yeah, that's cool" and then putting the Rift away until the next time.
If you still want to get it, Minecrift is awesome, Lunar Flight is really cool, and there's an untold number of little demos out there to try (Blue Marble, Jumpman, Frequency Domain, etc).
If it's just a couple webcams then I wouldn't be concerned. A couple frames of lag might hinder you from having a real-life boxing match, but it should be perfectly sufficient for helping you find your drink or whatever.I would be super wary of this unless they had hard numbers about latency, and how they tested it. Doing a live video feed with hardly any latency is really difficult in my limited experience.
Ordered it today and just got this... Sounds too good to be true.
I ordered on August 8th and still waiting...![]()
I would love to see an embedded camera-to-software-renderer solution with reliable sub-100 ms latency. I would expect something like 5-10 frames of lag at 60 fps. I'm not sure how common 60 fps webcams are either, maybe more common than I would expect. If it's just a couple webcams then I wouldn't be concerned. Site said new orders estimated to ship in October so I assumed. Could be inaccurate though!
In Europe? It seems a lot of users in Europe are receiving e-mails like this even within hours of their orders.
