Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

I am officially commissioning any indie dev to create the ultimate VR game – simulation of the real fantasy role play tabletop session.

role_playing_gamersgvlpx.jpg

The main point of the game is that is as close to real life, meaning, game does not need to calculate ANYTHING regarding to the player stats, combat mechanic or anything else. Just enable players write, move objects, throw dice and talk to each other. Oldschool FRP sessions always were and they will always be the best! :D

- Players are stationary, sitting in the chair in front of a table, so there will be no motion problems, and 2 hydras will work great for manipulating objects.
- Each player has pencil, set of dice, character SHEET, maybe BOOK or two, generic figurine [or a simple token] representing his character, and a sheet of paper for random doodling. Pencil and dice can be magically summoned into the hand of the player with the press of the hydra button, for simplicity sake.
- GM has same, but with more tokens, protective screen, more books and tokens…
- SHEETS are chosen before the session starts, there a lot of non-official char sheets on the web.
- BOOKS are procedurally generated by telling the game which PDF file to use to create those books (this way, players can play anything they want).
- As for visuals, only table, users and objects on it need to be rendered nicely, the rest is irrelevant (empty holodeck, generic nature, modern FRP establishment, fantasy inn, etc). Let’s say 10 normal looking male and female avatars should be enough (no need for fantasy/SF/horror avatars yet).

Add save/load capability, and the users can start playing ANYTHING they want, yell at each other at will, GM can control the game however he wants (lie :D ), dice rolls will be “real”, etc. Sky is the limit.

Even rudimentary version of this VR game with simple graphics [or a small scale 2 player "TCG" version that could generate only user generated deck of cards, tokens and dices] could provide countless amounts of fun. True VR sandbox.

That reminds me...

My face when someone makes the perfect VR Yu-Gi-Oh game. Simple and completely realistic tabletop card game, holo-box from Duelist Kingdom in the manga, standard arena from the anime, Battle City duel disks, Games of Darkness, Coliseum duels; I want them all as options. Virtual monsters that explode in a 3D shower of particles, actual functioning duel disks in virtual form with none of the issues inherent to real life physics and design limitations. I am so goddamn hype for that idea. If they ever make that and make it good, they will have my money. And with the motion tracking and button setup of a controller like the STEM, selection and contextual actions will easily be remedied. Plenty of available options for assigning functions to different moves and button combinations.

Card and DND games would be very heavy on the reading though, which is currently one of the things the Rift is worst at. Maybe with the consumer version.

How much are you paying?

Wow has anyone on here tried this? Looks cool!!!!!

Yeah I tried it while I was playing through the VR Jam entries. It's a really cool idea having a game within a game and having that game somewhat influence your playing environment. It was very easy for me to play the game on the TV and get lost in the surrounding scenery. It kind of made that environment feel more real than usual in VR. Being that this was quickly made for the VR Jam it is really only worth playing for the proof of concept. The game within the game is pretty basic and the punch line at the end was a little lacking, but the whole time I'm thinking of all the possibilities that one can do with this concept. Hope they continue on with this and take it further.

What is the current order backlog looking like if I were to place an order today? Sudden influx of $900 and it's burning a hole in my pocket :(

So whats all available that you can play currently?

I'm really tempted to get one now that orders are arriving sooner and sooner (originally was going to wait for HD version).

I've...I've got this Oculus Rift just sitting here gathering dust if you really want to rid yourself of that $900.

jk. Sort of. Not really. Would totally accept your monays.

I would wait, honestly. It's cool, but the experience right now is mostly waiting for the next tech demo, trying it, being all "yeah, that's cool" and then putting the Rift away until the next time.

If you still want to get it, Minecrift is awesome, Lunar Flight is really cool, and there's an untold number of little demos out there to try (Blue Marble, Jumpman, Frequency Domain, etc).

So how promising is that VorpX thing? Will it actually work?

Edit: Also, I've had my Rift forever now and still don't really understand the adjustment. When using the C lenses what should it be at? And what it should it be with the A ones? And I'm still having trouble with the A lenses, my glasses are just a tad too big to fit in comfortably and I hate contacts so I've been using the C ones which aren't perfect due to the further zooming.

Just purchased one of the dev kit models. I wanna try and develop an idea I have had for awhile now. Won't be shipping till October so plenty of time to get a prototype together. I am really curious to see one of these in action I've watched so many videos of this thing I gotta experience it.

I was off-put buying one months back when it was a multiple month wait after ordering but now that it's a <1 month wait it's tempting..

I'd love to pick one up if the Consumer version is a year+ away (can easily see delays happening) but I'd regret it if it comes out in the summer. Tough decisions..

I noticed a new crowd funded camera attachment for the Oculus dev kit. Anyone else thinking about ordering this? You apparently can swipe your hand over the camera to swap out the game view with your real world surroundings so you don't have to remove your headset. It's called the "Vision Sensor"

When wearing the Oculus Rift, your eyes are covered and it is impossible to see even nearby objects. So when you’re looking for something like your mouse or keyboard, you have to take off your goggles.
But now with the use of the Vision Sensor, you can be freed from the hassle of constantly putting on and taking off the Rift in order to see what’s in front of you. A simple swinging gesture from your hand in front of the camera will activate a sensor. With that easy movement, your current display will be replaced with a view of the real world.

It also will include development software to create AR games with it. They are asking 100 bucks for it, but I'm kinda skeptical about the risk associated with crowd funding.

I would be super wary of this unless they had hard numbers about latency, and how they tested it. Doing a live video feed with hardly any latency is really difficult in my limited experience.

I think it's still a 6 weeks+ wait. I hit my month on the 28th and still have not heard anything.

Ordered it today and just got this... Sounds too good to be true.

Your Oculus Order is About to Ship

You're receiving this email because your Oculus order will be advancing to "Processing" status in the next 24-48 hours.

Graaa still so tempted to get one.

If it's just a couple webcams then I wouldn't be concerned. A couple frames of lag might hinder you from having a real-life boxing match, but it should be perfectly sufficient for helping you find your drink or whatever.

I would love to see an embedded camera-to-software-renderer solution with reliable sub-100 ms latency. I would expect something like 5-10 frames of lag at 60 fps. I'm not sure how common 60 fps webcams are either, maybe more common than I would expect.

Latency tester orders just came online for anyone who reserved a spot. $100 plus $12 shipping for U.S. Quite expensive but I'm quite curious about latency so I'm getting one.

The Rift forums are having some incredible meltdowns because of the shipping fiasco.

In brief, about a month ago people have been whining (way more than usual) about a shipping update, especially users in North America.

European members in 69xxx are getting shipping updates while NA members in 64xxx are still waiting. This is due to how "batches" are allocated by region and not by order number.

The community manager finally updates a couple of weeks ago that the next 2000 kits will be for North America and should start shipping by end of September.

Well, a ton of European customers just started posting over the last day that they're getting shipping notifications, etc, which has driven NA people berserk (some have been waiting for almost 2 months).

The moderator guy has already said they don't ship the product out on an individual basis but is large shipments at a time. The reason why EU is getting them so fast is because they had alot left over from the last shipment they sent to the EU. He says there is currently 2000 on the way to North America so some people will be getting them soon enough. Since the cost of shipping them individually is pricey I wonder if they should allow the option for an additional fee. I mean I'm in Canada and shipping on this was like $45.00 but I would probably pay a little extra to speed it up if I had the option.

The meltdowns are abit ridiculous imo as people just don't seem to want to read. They really need a better disclaimer before ordering informing people their shipment may take time. I can't wait for mine I am super excited I've had so many ideas floating around my head the last few days of what to do with this thing its unreal lol.

Damn, I want this so bad. It's getting harder and harder to hold out for a consumer version, and the lack of any information or timeline makes it worse.

Got to try this at Eurogamer Expo and though it has solidified my desire to get one, that was the worst demo ever. Surgeon Simulator!? Seriously? 2 minutes of fumbling on a laptop keyboard and a track pad and times up. Agh. Wish i'd gotten lucky enough to try War Thunder at least.
