Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

A lot of optimism on where this will be in the next 5 years... but I'm not hearing any hype anywhere except from the deepest darkest pits of the internet. I hope beyond hope that not only will this technology meet my expectations (never used one yet) but that it does catch on... just because something is a good idea is no guarantee that it'll pan out in the long run.
That's what the developer kits are for, TO CREATE HYPE, to make the product worth people's time, the developers are the roots of the tree, slowly making the tree stronger and stronger, bringing it to life and keeping it alive.

Once people start creating interesting things for the Occulus Rift, it will get more and more attention by the general public. Then once we have an official announcement for the real thing along with all the new things people have come up with ready to work on launch, people will be drooling all over the place for one, let's hope they can swim.

Actually, my plan is rather to have the PS Eye strapped to my head (in 120Hz mode). Maybe 3 of them.

Build a rig that juts out from your back by say 3' and mount two of them to it at a correct stereoscopic position, feed it to the rift and give yourself real life OTS view, it has got to be unnerving.

Do it for science!

What do you guys think is the most elegant solution to the body tracking vs. head tracking issue?

Something like Kinect 2.0, where it can build a proper skeleton and really track you in a 3D space. Latency is going to be the problem there I guess.

When was there so much hype about a developer kit the public could access as
well? Form the video, the screen-door effect looks ok to me for the time
being. And I think one gets used to it over time while tinkering around with kit.

The much more important thing in my books is that developers make stunning
games for the Rift. The rest is just a matter of time.

lets hope xbox3 pad + Kinect2 combo is awesome and works on PC. Who knows, maybe M$ gives us the best Solution without knowing :lol

I'm a little miffed about the ebay price right now. Especially now that I've remembered I actually placed the order on the 275 early bird kit. Because I remember cancelling it now, and going to the kickstarter page and seeing that my kit now allowed somebody to order long after that tier had closed off.

EDIT: Just went through the Nvidia mobile thread and after looking at all the salty tears of console fans defending AMD, it dawned on me: In two years something like Nvidia's "Parker" could be built into VR headsets. How awesome will that be? The mobile revolution is going to be awesome in so many unexpected ways.

It kind of seems like the seller is manipulating the price with another account in that eBay auction if you look at the bid history.

Sorry but what's with American kids and those hairstyles?

Are hairdressers not allowed to touch children's hair over there until they're 18 or something?

Just wondering.

:)

That's what I'm here for lol :p

Nothing. You're applying your experience of one subset of american kids to all of them.

Yeah but you see this over and over and over again. I get that not ALL American kids look like this, but a hell of a lot of them do.

Is this considered a good look in America? I'm honestly curious, not trolling.

Personally I think it looks like shit. But hey, ya can't buy style. Just ask that kid.

Badoom-tish!

Honestly, I don't even know what that's supposed to mean. If anything, most kids here have really short haircuts. That "hippie, floppy" look is what most people would associate with Europeans than anything. So I'm sure the stereotypes go both ways.

https://www.oculusvr.com/sales/ is the only way, but it's out of date at the moment. I received my Rift on Friday but my order status is still "Processing" and I never got a tracking number. I would imagine that they will start updating this stuff today now that GDC is over.

Thanks, looks like im processing as well. Hopefully it comes soon. Where about are you if you dont mind me asking?

Yes stereotypes exist everywhere but this 'dork thinks he's cool look' is especially prevelant in certain areas. Just my opinion, no need to take it personally. Btw, by "most people", do you really mean Americans? Coz I surely don't, I associate it with U.S. of A.

Yes. I mean Americans. I certainly don't see many kids running around with floppy hair.

I don't take it personally, I just think it's funny. Because I'm sure Americans think the same thing about Europeans (well, if they watch the NBA and see all the floppy haired Euro exports they seem to spit out).

Actually yes, totally agree. There are a lot of floppy-haired Euro basketballers and that's just weird. That hairstyle should be banned across the board. No pun intended :)

So what's the performance impact on using this thing. Is it like running dual monitors? What resolution?

It's tough to say because nothing that runs on it right now is particularly demanding. I've got an FX-3850 @ 4.4ghz and a 7870 and I can easily maintain 60fps in everything so far. It's only 1280x800 so I don't think you need a supercomputer to use the dev kit.

I thought someone was saying that the actual render target is bigger than that, and the 1280x800 applies after the deformation, so it may be a bit tougher than 1280x800.

That said, holy crap 4.4 GHz, I must be way out of date on the CPU market. I feel like the last time I looked most everything was 2-3 GHz and they were just trying to use more cores or other methods to enhance performance.

iirc the rendering res of each frame pre rift distortion is ~1000x1600x2 for the 1280x800 panel

Remember everyone. Its ground zero, day 1. This is what needs to happen for innovation to take place with VR in general. Its about time someone out there recognizes this and really pushes hard for it.

I like the number of posts that were wasted bitching about a kid's hairstyle.

Written summary of Abrash's GDC talk, dunno if it's been posted already.

Very interesting, focusing almost entirely on issues of head mounted displays

There's some excellent insight there. Hopefully designers and developers are going to stick with it long enough this time to fully realise the technology. It's a long way off, but it'll be worth the wait.

...if it doesn't just end up being used exclusively for torture porn and ponies.

Nice to see the front stereo cameras ... the thing that bothered me most with the oculus concept was that it turned the user blind to his environment. With cameras you can at least choose to see again, it even allows augmented reality.

Man, if that's true I hope they offer some kind of upgrade deal for current dev kit owners because I will almost certainly buy one. Also, it seems like they could still be shipping existing orders in Q3.. I would feel kind of bad for those people if the next dev kit version was available at the same time they receive the first version.

I think the cameras are there for better tracking. Right now if you lean forward or crouch down the tracker can't pick it up.

but with 1080p screens and 2 cams it wont be $300. :/

that Sony device (720p 3D screens?) is like $800 or something.

Cameras aren't very expensive, and part of the reason they're waiting so long is because 7" 1080p panels will probably have come down in price enough by then that they can keep it near $300.

And the HMZ-1 uses two separate, smallish 720p widescreen OLEDs. This is a single 16:10 screen, with nothing but optics achieving the 3D effect.

Im so glad I bought devkit, consumer model is so far away... however in Q3 of this year they will release Devkit #2.

No surprise there. The people who honestly thought we'd see a consumer model this time next year were out of their minds, in my opinion. There's so, so much work to be done.

Devkit #2 supposedly releasing Q3 of this year is an interesting thought, I can't help but think even that is crazy...remember, this company hasn't even secured a source for 5-inch 1080p screens that do what they need done yet.

I had a feeling we'd see a stop-gap devkit upgrade though, it makes sense: You want something that apes the consumer model, so that devs can tweak their games for the new screen size and capabilities prior to the consumer launch.

My guess is that Devkit #2 won't launch until early 2014 and we will see the consumer model in early 2015. The company timeline seems just a tad optimistic.

Unless something goes terribly wrong, they'll be tossing 7" panels for the 5" variety they originally wanted ASAP. 7" panels won't work for the weight and size targets they want to hit.
