Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

Don't think I could wait for the consumer model TBH, hopefully I will be able to get Devkit 2 when it comes.
Also I have my fears over the price of the consumer model, the tech sounds like it's gonna be expensive as hell

Which part of it exactly? The cameras are dirt cheap, as are the sensors. The optics can't be it either, otherwise they couldn't just throw in 2 free extra sets in the devkit. The only single component with significant expense is the display, and that's why they are waiting for it to go down. The 1080p AMOLED display in the Galaxy S4 is put at USD 75 in the BoM estimates I found. Of course, the expense would be significantly higher for a company like Oculus compared to Samsung, but still, I don't see a massive cost issue.

Regarding the talk in price, iirc Palmer was saying he was hoping to get the price a little under the $300 dev kit mark.

Also, if you look at those slides, DK1 - $3m (10k units, $300/each), DK2 - $12m (40k units, $300/each), CK1 - $125m+ (500k+ units, $250/each). So it seems like their goal, at least, is a $250~ price point for the consumer model.
 
I want this to be real but

-Nvidia's conference was over a week ago right? How didn't this leak earlier?

-date on those slides says March 7th ?

-Abrash's presentation mentioned a huge list of issues that need to be fixed before we get really good VR, and AR comes after that point has been reached ...

edit : -they mention every show they would go to (GDC, SXSW etc) , GTC was never mentioned ... was this supposed to be secret ?

edit 2 : -that "3DS slider" thing sounds like BS :p and wireless would do wonders for the latency ^^

DOTA 2 isn't one I would typically think of.

And you notice what games aren't even listed as potentials there? Any DOOM game.

*edit* If this is April 1 fake news then yeah, bleahhhhh. Where did it come from?

I was trying to picture this in my mind, and it doesn't really make sense. If they let you move your screen view by looking around, that strikes me as a pretty huge advantage, what with being able to quickly glance uplane/downlane.

Wait a second...is Palmer going to become a billionaire off the backs of DOTA 2 tryhards willing to spend money for a competitive edge? ;)

It's definitely been brought up before. A screen with a different size and resolution would mean different optics and possibly different warping. Devs would definitely need to tweak and test that stuff before the consumer version is released.

Yeah but they did a whole kickstarter to get the funding to make this first devkit. Where would the money come from for the second? They've also been pretty damn tight lipped about what games may or may not be on the Rift (not even really confirming Hawken for sure until very recently) and that slide full of names (even if it says potential and not confirmed) is kind of not their style.

The same guy outbids himself over and over while a second Rift sits there for $530 with no bids. It definitely looks like you're right. I feel bad for whoever is going to be left holding the bag.
 
Well, MTBS3D seems to have bit on the Devkit 2 rumor hook line and sinker. I'm not sure how I feel about it if it is true and if they actually think they can get it done in the time frame that the slide suggests. If I get a Rift in May and they've got DK2 ready for Q3 2013.... and it has a 1080p screen...for a similar price...

No me gusta. Unless I can sell DK1 I guess =/

It's funny but it doesn't bother me that much (things like this usually do).

The first reason is that I'm genuinely using this as a devkit so it has a use outside of gaming for personal enjoyment.

The second is that I always knew this was the ground floor, things can only get better from here but it's exciting to be in at the beginning.

The third is that the v1 devkit has some intrinsic value and probably always will. Look at the Virtual Boy - 750k units shipped worldwide and today it's rare and worth a reasonable amount of cash. Sure, a lot of that is due to the Nintendo factor specifically, but think how important an artifact a v1 kit will be in 20 years time if Oculus and/or their tech takes off. There will probably only ever be around 20-30k in existence. I know I'm going to keep the device, case and all the spare bits together and in nice condition!

If the consumer version has 1080p and positional tracking, then they'll need some way to get devs that spec to develop on and test.

I'm assuming those cameras are for positional tracking - for AR they'd need to be really wide FoV and I can't see them pulling that off this quickly. Maybe enough for a quick 'see through' mode so you are completely shut off from the real world

TF2 has some settings to tune it to different people's eyes, right? It might not be as bad if it was set up for him, but who knows.

I have HORRIBLE motion sickness in real life if motion is involved, but am hardly ever bothered by video games aside from STALKER side-to-side head bob. It's going to be pretty interesting to see whether the Rift affects me.
 
Welp, looks like they're promising it isn't a joke down in the comments, just a delayed article/post. Seems like it's legit.
 
If the price isn't crazy, and I enjoy the Rift, I'll probably get an updated version with a newer screen too. If anything it'd be closer to a "consumer" version, which I was aware was in the plans anyway.
 
Definitely interesting then. Not only that there's a V2 coming, but that, as Blizzard pointed out, Doom 3 is mysteriously missing from that slide.

The only game I am dying to fucking play on the Rift is Minecraft.
Being able to peacefully wander through my own blocky universe in full 3D with headtracking would be the best thing in the world. I would likely never leave my house again.

in Fortnite you can build stuff too :D

and i think it makes no sense to order dev kit V1 atm.

Skyrim is there though, which means that Zenimax has probably not completely wigged out on them. The whole thing is just odd.

I agree with this. I'm really close to just cancelling and waiting. I'm not a dev, and I've already waited this long anyway. They really need to specify what they'd put in a V2. If it's a higher screen, I'd definitely want it. If it's 6DOF tracking with the same screen, I'm less interested at the moment (few games support that anyway).

I probably won't cancel just due to knowing that they wouldn't get the cut back from Kickstarter. I'd feel kind of dumb spending another $300 in a couple months though.

I imagine head tracking in games like this is incredibly difficult, to the point where it's probably not worth the effort. You can't give the player a full range of head movement because 1) it's nonsense, and 2) you wouldn't get any of the impressions of G forces.

And if you limit the look-range and insert a certain amount of 'simulated' wobble in braking zones and through corners on top of actual head tracking, then I imagine your brain is just going to give a big ol' nooooooooope.

if you get the Rift in the next weeks it makes sense (just sell it on ebay :lol) but if i would order now i would get it when? June?? Sry thats just one month away from the first month in q3 xD

edit: maybe people who bought Dev 1.0 gets the 2.0V a little cheaper ^^
 
Yeah, they're going to have to address this v2 stuff pretty quickly because there's no reason for people who are going to be waiting months anyway not to cancel their orders and wait, leaving Oculus sitting on the 15k dev kit v1s they've had manufactured but not shipped.

I'm order number 8000 something from the kickstarter. That includes people that backed for a dollar, so I'm probably six or seven thousand people deep for a Rift. They've only shipped 300 kits so far that we know of.

My conscience kind of has me by the balls. Kickstarter has already got their commission (which pains me after the RPG camp debacle) and that money already went towards building the factory and whatnot. I'm sure they could easily sell my Rift to someone else though.

Well, technically Oculus doesn't have to give a single Kickstarter backer a refund. If people started asking for them in large numbers, they could just say that the offer for a refund had expired or whatever.

I agree with you though; If this slide has real info, they've got something of an issue.
 
they should sell Dev2.0 for 250$ to Dev1.0 owner and for 300/350$ to other people. I think that would be fair and i am not a Dev 1.0 Owner ^^

And if it comes in q3 it will be late late q3, maybe only for important Devs like Valve or Notch (devs who got their kits in Feb.) and the normal Guys get it in q4.

From the terms & conditions it seems like the non-Kickstarter preorders may be cancel-able

Regarding this hypothetical consumer version, are there any benefits to the stereo cameras beyond augmented reality applications? Or could the cameras say, do a rudimental kind of body tracking that functions as input? I'm not too up on technology so I don't know what's possible. I'm aware that Kinect and EyeToy use cameras for tracking, but those cameras are in front of the user and apparently have latency issues.

I'm guessing the answer is "no" based on this:

Which is a little disappointing, as it seems the cameras would drive up the manufacturing cost of the Rift for little benefit (head-tracking only AR). But again, I don't know much about this.
 
Plus there's a racing title from Slightly Mad Studios (possibly pCars).

I think they're almost certainly for tracking. They probably won't have a wide enough FOV to do augmented reality very well.

you could still use them to view real life to drink sth. or check your smartphone ^^

i think outside cams are a must have for VR :)

I hope you're right. In any case, I guess we'll probably hear more from Oculus in the coming weeks now that this presentation information is out in the open.
