Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

Cool new Unity demo: http://rustltd.com/news/adventures-in-virtual-reality

Definitely check this out if you've got a Rift. Its a lot more impressive than the Tuscany demo.

When the Rift's finally start getting into more hands, I could see a lot of pretty impressive Unity demos coming out. People can't monetize them without the $1500 license, but I think a chip-in or paypal donate button on their tumblr or whatever would be in order.

Aren't they violating the license terms of the Unity professional trial license if they share something for free? The wording of the license indicated that people weren't allowed to even DISTRIBUTE anything they made with it during the trial period.

Or did the Unity people change/clarify that?

Yeah, you can't distribute anything made with either the Unity Pro trial or the $100 Unity Pro student edition at all. It has to be from the full $1500 license.

You can't "technically" distribute anything. Technically.

To clarify, I don't think people should make money off of a game made in their engine without paying the licensing fee; I'm thinking more along the lines of "Hey guys, look how I solved this control issue. Here's the code." without money having to change hands.

Imagine that we could finally get a good Terminator game!

I think it would be quite reasonable if the Unity people made the licensing agreement such that you could share only for free things made with the trial version, so people could play test them. Or if they clarify and say you can share the code, and everyone who wants to play something will have to rebuild it on their own.

I mean, it would be nice if it was like the UDK presumably will be, where you can develop and share without paying anything or having license problems, but AT MINIMUM if they changed their stance to allow minimal code/playtest sharing during the trial period, I would think that could only help Unity. :/

I managed to troll myself yesterday.

So I went through the process of checking my order status for the billionth time and finally decided to fill in my phone number, out of boredom I assume. Unless that was desperation. I'm not sure.

Anyway...

Later in the afternoon, after forgetting this little update I had done, I get this email:

Oculus Order Update Notification

This is a notification that your Oculus order has been updated. If you didn't make this update, or you think this may be a mistake, please send us an email at support@oculusvr.com.

My heart stopped for a second. Nice wording there, bastids!

At 300 shipped total (unless another shipment has gone out; been too busy to check) and as number 8000+ in the line, I'm not holding my breath.

I actually do get momentarily giddy when I see an e-mail from Oculus though =/

I have order ID 000402 and live in Toronto. I now have tracking data for my Rift dev kit (I found it on the order information page by chance, I did not receive an email indicating it had shipped). Apparently it shipped on the 28th, and will arrive by end of day tomorrow.

I just got mine delivered in Canada. It's really low resolution and things are super blurry when you move fast, but it's still pretty much the most amazing 3d experience ive ever had.

I reached out over a railing in the game and hit my hand against my apartment wall.

Why would they run in a window?

I think it's because it needs to be hooked up as a second monitor with the desktop extended onto it. The game then runs as a window that fills only the Rift display. Supposedly if you try to duplicate the displays then vsync doesn't work, and if you don't use the Rift as a display at all it's not enumerated by directx.

Oh my god.

It seems like they seriously shipped my Rift to Australia instead of Austria. I guess I'd have received it by now otherwise.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. My shipping address on the Oculus page very clearly says "Austria".

lol sorry man, but it's kind of funny

Oh man, that sucks but I cant stop laughing at that tracking info. I wonder which continent it will hit next.

I've been rooting for Durante to receive his, but sorry, that's too funny. I would have thought that was all automated by codes that would make such a comical mistake impossible.

EDIT: On second thought, that whole timeline seems weird. Coming into Hong Kong twice. Being in Australia at the same time it was in Hong Kong the first time. Not showing an "arrival" scan for the second time it's in Australia. Probably just completely natural and they're shipping westward (with some odd glitches that really aren't that retarded in real life).

Did it...did it go through Australia TWICE?

I don't know how the shipping company works, but I guess you could at least email the Oculus people and ask if they can put an alert on the package next time it goes through somewhere. You're going to have to pay like a billion dollars in customs too. :P

LOL it went to Hong Kong then Australia, then Hong Kong, then Singapore, then BACK to Australia, and NOW the cycle begins again in Hong Kong, wtf!?

Edit: Oh wait I get it, they are all opening the package taking turns to try it out.

That was my initial thought/hope. But on the upper right it say the destination is Innsbruck, AU. AU is the 2 letter code for Australia, Austria is AT.

i was order 333 i think. One of the un-assembled kits. (which came fully assembled) the box says 221/300

also ups import charges were $96.73

Damn, that brings the total shipping charges to nearly $130. Too bad we couldn't have picked express shipping from the get go.

Multi GPU support is out then, unless there's a workaround.

Oh. I missed that part. Not sure why they'd ship it back to Hong Kong, though, if it was going to Innsbruck. Guess you'll have a good idea when they update the next location tomorrow. Hopefully it's well northwest of there.

I would....I would probably cry.

According to a post on the Oculus forums (I think by the original perception driver author), the next batch, however many that is, should be shipping by the end of this week.

This next batch needs to be like...a couple thousand at least. No more of this 300 at a time garbage :P

You've got to be kidding me...

Why do American companies continue to use UPS? In total we're being charged a whopping $126.73 for shipping, which is absurd.

I knew this "1500 units a week shipped" thing was crazy talk. Yet another Kickstarted company with no clue how much effort this sort of process takes. Wasn't the first, won't be the last.

Edit: To clarify, the tone of this post should be interpreted as "gentle ribbing" rather than "outright mockery". One has to realize that Palmer went from gluing together prototypes by himself to a multi-million dollar company in a very, very short time. Hiccups are bound to occur in the process.

Reading the TF2 slide show makes me think I might have a serious problem with the OR... I often have motion sickness just from playing games on PC (mostly those with head bobbing or motion blur).

While I do believe Valve will put in the effort as per their slides to keep this to a minimum... I just get the feeling that most devs won't even try. Assuming the majority of gamers will just "get used to it". Damn... that is a disappointing thought.

Pretty disappointed but I know it just has more to do with anticipation. Think they could be doing a better job with communication, I just want the damned thing already.

I'm from Aus and finally got my package yesterday. I tried tf2 a bit and you really have to calibrate the IPD before playing to fully expand the screen to your fov.

Vireio Perception is starting to work pretty well with the latest build on mtbs. I just played some Half Life 2 and Skyrim and there are definitely still issues but they're getting to be playable.
