Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

from the oculus blog via reddit:

http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/1gcp2s/us_customs_update_dont_get_your_hopes_up/

"We’re in the process of transitioning to post-Kickstarter pre-order fulfillment. Hang with us — we’ve run into a few duty/customs snags that are holding up shipments to NA/EU, but we hope to have them sorted out soon.
As previously stated, duties and taxes are the responsibility of the customer for pre-orders taken through the website (ie. all post-Kickstarter dev kits) but we’re working on minimizing delivery charges.
Thanks for your patience!"

Does this mean I'm going to have to pay extra for something that's currently ~3 months late (and looking like it's not getting here too soon?)

Please tell me the answer is 'fuck no,' because that seems a little illegal.

They can't do anything about your country's customs.

I'm in the United States. They're talking about the shipment delays for US packages, and they're (obviously) paying taxes importing consumer goods into the US.

This is obviously distinct from a customs office charging the consumer for, say, a shipment from the US to Spain. That'd be the Spain customs office (and post office) charging the consumer for delivery of mail. Mail sent overseas is usually transferred from USPS to a domestic postal service in the other country, who will then charge the consumer a small fee -- this is unavoidable.

However, those taxes aren't for my shipment. They're for a large batch of rifts coming into the US from China, and are apparently higher than Oculus expected.

It isn't the consumer's fault if --

A: Customs is unfairly targeting the shipments of rifts, causing tariffs for that of a consumer good when Oculus belives they're shipping a prototype device (as I've heard)

B: The shipping departments at Oculus didn't expect these costs.

It'd be like if the team at Oculus didn't account for shrinkage, lost a few dozen Rifts somehow, and then informed the corresponding buyers (and only them -- this customs issue is, so far, only effecting one batch) they'd need to pay for new ones and wait for them to be manufactured.

Yeah I'm not too happy about probably paying more + having a shipping delay.

There's no way I'll accept the shipment if they really attempt to charge on delivery, but I doubt they will -- negotiating a contract with USPS or FedEx to collect money for the shipments at the door sounds like more trouble than it's worth.

A bill before it ships to your house, maybe? I probably wouldn't pay that either. I support VR, but after ~5-6 delays, a downgrade to the extras included in the newer kits, a 1080p version on the way...... Add additional fees to the mix and I'm out.

It must be frustrating for people that pre-ordered 3 months ago, to still not have their Rift whilst at E3 they were already showing the high resolution version to certain press.

Or 5 months ago like those of us apparently held up at customs, hopefully everything is resolved soon

It's not like they can halt development on the system until they've fulfilled an ever-increasing number of pre-orders for a prototype dev kit, they've made it pretty clear this is a dev kit - if your the sort of person who gets annoyed when a newer version of something you've just purchased has come out, you shouldn't be buying a dev kit. When Sony announced they doubled the RAM, you didn't hear a bunch of "FUCK YOU GUYS!" from the developers in the audience ;)

so i got mirroring working fairly easily by swapping to hdmi and changing card

just tried doom 3 bfg and tuscany, head tracking still doesn't work :/ just a static image that follows you around, tried 4 usb ports aswell, anything else to try?

I had the same problem with head tracking not working. Evidently, there can be conflicts with certain Logitech tray programs - for me, it was the one for my headset that was causing problems. Once I shut that down and reinserted the USB plug, it worked fine.

Others had issues with controller, mouse and keyboard tray programs. Try turning those off and see what happens.

That example didn't make any sense to me.. apples and oranges I think. Anyhow the delays in the shipment of this thing is pretty bad any way you look at it.

However, it is possible to cancel the pre-order before shipment according to the ToS, so there's some margins there, which is good, kinda.

Damn, my Rift spent a full day in Nurnberg, so it's only scheduled to be delivered on Tuesday. I was really hoping I would get it on Friday. :( Anyway, I need to prepare: What cables are included with Rift?

i actually read about the lcore.exe compatibility issues on their forums yesterday, so i killed the process and tried it with no joy, then i set it to not start with windows and rebooted, no joy. i was getting kinda bored with it but read your post as i got in last night, i was like ye i've done that but oh i didn't replug the usb cable, like that's gonna work......oh it does work :D cheers for the advice

I'm relieved for you. Enjoy!

Glad it worked out! So, don't leave us hanging - what have you tried so far?

Thx, HDMI is all I need. Can someone tell me how long the cables are (control box to OR and HDMI to control box)?

mine was only about 3ft. Not great, considering the cable from the breakout box to the rift is only about 6ft too, and my PC is on the floor.

Well, that's strange.

Mine had everything I could need, they even went as far as providing ac adapters for different regions.

it seems like they're cutting back on stuff. Had a few UK orders arrive around the time of mine with different cables but all less than what was originally described.

Mine shipped with 2 HDMI cables and a DVI cable and a DVI/HDMI adapter. I could understand if they are downsizing a bit for the later batches, that was pretty insane.

Everything you need: usb, hdmi, and dvi.

mine only had a HDMI cable. I had to dig out some DVI-HDMI adapters because my GPU already had the HDMI socket taken

I PM'd Lucario to ask about this but hadn't gotten a response yet, but I assume this is what he meant. If I'm reading this correctly, the newer units do not even come with a USB cable? That's unfortunate if so. I'm not sure I have a spare around so I'll have to order one. :(

Also on this note, are there any advantages/disadvantages with HDMI vs DVI for the Rift?

I wonder if it's possible to make the sounds in a game stereophonic, it seems like it would fit perfectly with the Oculus Rift.

Just got my kit. I'm impressed with how responsive it is and everything else, but right now even after 30 seconds I get nausea, I hope this will get better over time :/

try something relaxing like the Blue Marble demo, don't start with the rollercoaster or similar

Are these shipping with the 720/800 panels? They are pretty blocky, although Durante said AA / SuperSampling should help.

Also figured I should repost my impressions here:

It's that good. Seriously impressive. They just need a better display on it (1080 minimum, would like to see 1440p. I'm not sure how much AA will help) and to knock the latency down a few ms (For me, for others it's probably fine).

Oculus Rift (If A Tree Screams in the Forest - IndieCade)

It's an indie tech demo that makes use of the OR
The OR is neat, but the current low resolution display and very perceptible lag/latency/input->photon did not immerse me. I'm extremely sad about this as it seems I'm in the minority. Note I mostly game on PC at 90-120FPS.
  • Walk a path and have some trees stalk you when you aren't looking at them
  • Don't let the trees get you (Tree audio when they creep is unsettling and based on position)
  • Having to physically turn around to check for things made me feel VERY much more connected to the tension the game was building.
  • I burned the shit outta those trees

Oculus Rift (Sound Self - IndieCade)

  • It loops the rough sound of your voice into a tunneling visualizer
  • It's trippy
  • I got very dizzy when I stopped making noise and it went backwards at 60mph
  • Amazing potential for users under an influence

Oculus Rift (EVE VR)
  • Shit is amazing. BELIEVE.
  • All points by Evilore I can echo since I wasn't sure I could talk about it.

EVR is different. It's running 60FPS, making perfect use of the tech, applying it just enough onto something that already works (space combat).
Head tracking is wonderfully responsive and the missile reticule you aim with your head (toggle trigger) is incredibly precise with PC levels of input time (good).
It's just a joy to play and really adds another dimension of immersion.

Aw :(. Was super natural for me.
Had the pleasure to try out the HD-prototype with the 1080p-Panel at E3.
It was a very early prototype, still with lots of parts from the original devkit in place and as of yet there are no official plans of releasing it as a devkit. It uses a 6-inch-1080p-Panel instead of the 7-inch-1280x800-panel.

Due to the fact the kit used the same lenses as the old version, the viewing angle was noticabley lower- Especially at the sides black borders were noticable. It do not bother me a lot but I think it should be noted. With a 7-inch-screen or new lenses that warp the image accordingly the percieved resolution might be lower than what I saw.

But the good news is: The HD-prototype is a huge step forward! The screen-door-effect is nearly vanished.
That sounds great. Did they talk about the latency differences between that and maybe how much more it can come down?

Also on this note, are there any advantages/disadvantages with HDMI vs DVI for the Rift?
No different but it is depend of your GPU card. I think rift will be better off setting it as screen 2. Some card set Hdmi higher priority than DVI, if your card like that then connect DVI and HDMI for your main screen.

Still don't understand why people feel so "imprisoned" in the device. I mean sure you can take your head in your hands and scream but you just have to close your eyes not to be scared.

because we all learned as kids that monsters don't go away just by closing our eyes and the feeling in the Rift makes monster look and feel incredibly real :)
it takes some unlearning to accept the reality as not real and closing eyes to work.

Oculus to add blink sensors to the consumer version so developers know whey of have your eyes closed..

Nice surprise, I had never even heard of this. Will try when I get home.

Make sure to have your rift pointing forwards and level when you launch the game, doesn't seem to be any way to reset that after launch. Try 'test flight' from the main menu to have a quick fly around in one of the biplanes

Holy shit, I just tried mine out during my lunch break. Good thing that I kept my expectations in check because I was pleasantly surprised by the screen. After reading tons of stuff I actually expected some SNES level pixel soup :D

Tried the RiftCoaster first and it was really amazing. Didn't get a lot of reaction out of my dad but my mum was actually screaming. Second demo I tried was the Parrot Coaster. Was pretty nice but not as good as the RiftCoaster. Last thing I tried was the Titans of Space thingy and holy shit is this amazing. The weirdest thing was looking down and seeing my "body". It feels really weird when you try to move your arms and they're just lying there.

I'll try out some more stuff tonight, but I only had like 20 minutes with it so far.

Oh and I was surprised by how easy to setup it was. I was ready to fuck around with drivers and display settings but the only thing I had to do was to set it to mirror my first screen.

And because some people were wondering if the contents of the box have been downgraded: Mine came with 2 HDMI cables, 1 DVI cable, 1 USB cable, 3 or 4 different adapters for the power supply, the power supply itself and a second pair of optics. I'll check again when I come home in case I have forgotten anything.

Thanks for the details, I appreciate it. Also what country are you in if you don't mind me asking?

(There were originally 2 different sets of eyecups besides the main ones, I think, maybe that's been downgraded to only 1 extra set)

I'm in Austria. Didn't have to pay taxes either, I guess because they now ship from within the EU. I'll have to check the eye cups again, but I think there was only one set.

lol, just imagine you're playing something like Amnesia, close your eyes for a moment and when you open them again some fucked up monster is right in your face. Or, holy shit, that SCP game with the blink mechanic.

Yessssss. Diapers at the ready.

My Oculus arrived!

I tried the demo from the developers website, the immersion is way better than I thought, but I see everything out of focus, or like a very low res with a black grid making the pixels very noticeable, normal?

That said, it still looks amazing.

yeah. that's normal. low resolution is low. visible pixel structure is visible.

I'm also in Austria and had to pay €80 or so in taxes. Lucky sob!

I already had the money at home because I was sure I'd have to pay taxes etc, but now they're sending them from within the EU.

Oh, and I checked again, it actually came with 3 sets of lenses. So no downgrade at all.

So, War Thunder:
  • First of all: do NOT turn on in-game AA, or spend half an hour trying to figure out why you just get a black screen if you enable Rift mode.
  • The cockpit view is very oddly proportioned, I believe they scaling of everything is simply off. But they say they are actively working on it.
  • Other than that, flying around was great fun.
  • It's interesting how important a "realistic" (or even totally-unrealistically-proportioned-but-at-least-there) point of reference is for VR. I was flying around for half an hour or so in cockpit view, then I thought of trying the "virtual" cockpit view. I got sick after the first turn.

This could turn out great, they just need to fix the scaling and I need to figure out how to force some SSAA.
