Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

So, I don't know if this speaks to a big batch of Rift's shipping soon, but I just received an email saying my Rift has entered "Processing" and will be shipping soon.

I was told at the beginning of June that I might be getting one for demo/test purposes (i'll be writing a few articles regarding Rift as seen by someone who has been wheelchair bound from birth), and was allocated an order numbered 56,000 or so (meaning a very late/recent number).

Anyway, when I asked about the email I was told they were on track to get all current orders out the door by end of August.

OMG RIFT IS COMING!!!!!!!! FREAKOUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone know how to access the console and change settings for Unity demos? I recall them activating noclip when demoing them to people...can't figure out how to do it myself.

There's no Unreal-style console in Unity... if they had a noclip setting in a demo it would have been specifically coded for it.

I got my Rift a week or so ago and haven't done anything besides the demo thing with it. What games are good with the Rift already?

The main full games that I recommend are Team Fortress 2 and Half-life 2. Make sure you set the Rift to 1280x800 and configure your IPD in TF2 first, then copy the settings into HL2. There should be a guide around somewhere, or buried in this thread. And of course you can always post if you have questions. :)

I have also seen Doom 3 recommended, and maybe Minecraft, but third-party mods are involved so it may be a bit more work to experiment with them.

Minecraft is definitely awesome but it's a little tricky to get running. With the Rift is definitely my preferred way to play now, even if placing blocks is a bit harder in certain situations.

Doom 3 is pretty cool too. The visuals are great, but in it's current form the disconnect between the laser sight and where the gun model is aiming makes gunplay extremely awkward so far. But I don't want to be down on it because it's a very well done mod otherwise. I really appreciate him putting in the player model and getting the headtracking/3D working so well, not to mention hacking in freelook during cutscenes.

there is a fix for this if you don't mind not seeing your body. later versions of the mod default to using the multiplayer model in first person instead of the standard gun model, and as you say, the gun model of the multiplayer model doesn't line up at all with where you are really aiming.

I got my Rift last week, and have tried pretty much every demo I could get my hands on.

HL2 is the crown jewel so far. Absolutely amazing.

However, I unfortunately get sick when using it. Really sick. I can only do it for 10 minutes at a time before having to stop, then I continue to feel sick for one to two hours afterwords. I have been trying everything to get over the sickness, from using different cups to closing my eyes when using the controller to turn to taking ginger pills. Nothing is making it better or allowing me to play longer than 10 minutes.

It's the exact same feeling I get when reading a book in a car.

Nothing else makes me motion sick except the rift and reading in a car.

This is so incredibly frustrating.

Oh shit really?
I have that too, I can't even work in ambulances due to this kind of motion sickness.

Why don't you try Dimenhydrinate before playing? I know I will try anything possible to play OR.

for what it's worth, I get carsick reading in a car, but I have only become motion sick once from playing on my Oculus, and I've got multiple two hour sessions under my belt.

For what it's worth I get motion sickness from all sorts of things and did get a bit nauseous from the Rift coaster, but I think in this particular case it gets better if you play in little bits ever few days.

Whether wrong settings will (hopefully temporarily) screw up your eyes is another question. I think the main things to make sure of is that the IPD is as correct as possible, and the framerate is 60 or higher, and latency is as low as possible.

Fucking finally, my 47xxx order from March just went into Processing.
Got the '... About to Ship' email today, finally. Within the next 24-48h
the status should switch to Processing.

Can't wait programming for the Rift. Currently am programming a little cool
6-DOF rigid body engine. Can't wait seeing the fuck flying all around me! :+

I finally played Lunar Flight last night.

It is, by far, the most complete Rift game out there now. The developer redesigned the whole game to work entirely with the Rift-

Every control panel is fully interactive using your head to point at the various buttons

The whole cockpit was designed around the Rift

All the fonts are completely readable using the Rift

And it's also an extremely fun game to boot. Definitely grab it off Steam if you have an OR.

I thought it was pretty well done. The only issue I had was the tracking would move to a different center spot on me. I would look forward at the start of the game and then I would be looking kinda left or slightly right eventually.

I also received a coupon for 75% off for Lunar Flight. The first person to quote this can have it.

Pick me! Pick me!

I have a 75% off coupon as well. Just bought the game and got one. If anyone with a Rift (or waiting for one) is interested, hit me up.

Edit:...aaand gone!

Hi! New here. Should be getting my rift soon, as it just went to processing as well. Point is, I also have a lunar flight 75 percent coupon. Hit me up if you want it!

iRacing added Rift support today. I played it for about an hour. It's pretty damn impressive using a wheel + the Rift.

However, I felt absolutely no motion sickness after playing it for that long. Also, I played Lunar Flight for an hour before that, and didn't get sick either.

If I play any game where I'm actively walking around, I get so sick I can't play any more after 5-10 minutes. So, it seems any game where I'm in a stationary position like a cockpit or driver seat, I'm fine.

Interesting...

Have you tried War Thunder? Tf2 HL2 Doom3 all get me sick along with War Thunder even though it's in a cockpit. I'm attributing it to the way the camera pans when using the controller, it goes too fast

This is without setting IPD, I just wanted to dive in with what little time I had, maybe that will allieviate the sickness

Actually, I tried War Thunder right after posting this. I don't get sick in War Thunder either.

I'm hoping that if I play a bunch of War Thunder and Lunar Flight my brain will acclimate to the Rift and I'll be able to do first person stuff without getting sick. I really hope that's the case.

I'm jumping into this conversation late, so it's probably been discussed to death but is it possible that the motion sickness is due to the lack of positional head tracking?

I'm hoping this is the reason why I'm getting it.

I used to develop on Virtuality machines back in the 90s. They ran on Amigas, and had like a 60 degree field of vision and displayed about 10 frames per second. I never got sick in those things... but they did have positional head tracking.

It's so awesome. Too bad I don't have the slightest clue as to what I'm supposed to be doing in the game

Oh wow...iRacing added Rift support? I just took my wheel out for Euro Truck Sim 2 over the weekend...it must be fate.

I am really tempted to order the HD version when it's up. As much as I like the RIft, the screen door effect is pretty annoying. Any word as to when that may be?

None. Educated guess is 3 quarter 2014.

rift support for iracing is down until later in the week, it broke win xp compatibility with the sim, once that's fixed it'll be back in

Our only source on that is still the slides they showed at an nvidia conference with a devkit 2 in q3 2013 and consumer version q3 2014. It's dependent on getting lots of software support and the right hardware so that it doesn't launch in a way that could end up killing VR again, so no rushing and these projections are only guess by oculus

Hey guys... Just paying forward the generosity of a Gaffer who hooked me up with a Lunar Flight 75% off coupon (making it $2.50 on Steam).

Buying it, inexplicably just gave me another 75% off coupon, so if anyone wants it, drop me a PM. :-)
