Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

For the love of god.... can somebody try VorpX and Deus Ex Human Revolution? :)

It's pretty awesome and you feel like you're inside a cyberpunk world. But it obviously suffers from all the problems that injection drivers bring with them when compared to native implementations:

- Lots of tweaking to get it "right"
- menus/HUD not in your field of view (VorpX has a cool EdgePeek feature though)
- Forced camera movements make you sick
- Non-native implementation tends to be more nauseating, making long stretches of gameplay difficult
- Ingame-Text not readable due to the DK's low resolution

Aside from that, my experience with Human Revolution was pretty awesome. I will probably never forget the moment in one of the missions when you see Upper & Lower Hengsha from afar. It was truly breathtaking and the sense of scale is not at all comparable to viewing it on a monitor. Hengsha feels HUGE.

I just ordered my kit last night. Apparently next shipment goes out in November. Too bad I didn't pull the trigger sooner for the October shipment.

Well....

I ordered a kit at the beginning of August and they said September...

It's not here yet (though may be here tomorrow)

Thanks!

Using Vorpx with Mirror's Edge made me feel incredibly sick after 5 minutes, though it's probably to do with my settings as it isn't perfect. he crosshair dot in the middle is doubled so some tweaking might help

Native Rift games don't make me dizzy or sick at all though

Any news on an expected release date of the HDfied Rift DK? Played a couple of
weeks with the SD Rift for now and I'm in for spending some fresh money for a
HD one. Anyone?

Don't think there will be an HD dev kit

Just going straight to consumer. Then when you want to dev, get the consumer and download the SDK.

I think the HD rift dev kit is only a rumor based on a slide. It is very likely that the current rift will be the only hardware they ship until the consumer version late next year. Buy one now if you are interested.

But there are the HD versions shown on stage. Well, I want just one of these.

I already have one for a few month now. I just want moar, you know? ;)

Yes. I know. Just gotta wait. We have confirmation of no second dev kit both from CEO and VP.

I'm still waiting for my SD kit (out for delivery! Woo) now to see what cool stuff I can demo

The HD kit they have been showing is just a feature prototype. The only that changed is the screen, but it is still using the old optics and sensors.

I was waiting for a HD release, but I'm glad I cracked and just got one because it doesn't seem like they will release a second DK.

Question,

I have the Rift but only have a desktop. I want to bring it outside to let others try it. Any recommendations for good cheap-ish laptops/devices that run Rift demos? i don't really need a laptop so I don't want to spend a whole lot.

And no I won't be demoing the device in my tag before anyone asks lol.

The only hint was internal slide that mentioned "developer kit #2" in Q3-Q4 2013.

I guess some of the big players may already have an HD one "ordered" out of
the line, don't you think? Why can't the HD one be sold at about $500 to
cover the cost for the larger display + x? Yeah, I know, it doesn't work like
this, but still! ;)
Am interested if Gabe or Abrash are sitting on an SD one as well. Any bets?

i am not made for the OR

screen door effect is so bad... soo much blurriness (both in motion and distance)

i don't really feel much immersion

Hmm......

I'm proud of myself because I got through both Alone in the Rift and Dreadhalls. lol

I noped the fuck out the first time in Dreadhalls where I ended up hearing something behind me after checking out a bookshelf. Probably stared at the wall for 2 minutes before turning around and seeing some zombie mofo in my face. Closed my eyes and took that shit right off. Gave it a second go and made it to the ladder. =D

Any awesome new games out there?

I heard Outlast works with the Rift. Think I might give that a go next.

Damn, Outlast is pretty cool. Even with the Rift's low res when you use the night vision on the video cam it's eerily realistic. o_o

Got mine yesterday. Tried out Tuscany, Riftcoaster, Cobra Coaster, AaAaAA!, and TF2. I now understand why people can't seem to remain standing during the coaster demos. I was probably already nauseous after ten minutes. I actually had to lay down after playing TF2 because I was getting cold sweats. Don't get me wrong, I think the device is incredible. Looking down and not seeing your own body is really neat. I have a history of motion sickness so I'm probably an outside case. I'm going to go back in tonight and give it a second shot. Has anyone started off like me (with the sickness) then improved over time?

Yes, I hear that's quite common. You just need to work on your "VR legs", and over time you'll become less prone to motion sickness. The consumer version also will include a lot of enhancements to minimize the effect of motion sickness on people (such as a higher res screen and positional tracking with other features not yet talked about).

Whatever you do, if you feel motion sick, just stop. You can't push through it. Play more the next day and over time you should be able to play for longer periods of time.

Yea, I went overboard last night. I'm going to spend a little more time in Tuscany tonight to ease myself in. Don't let Scout in TF2 be your first trip in the Rift ever, lol.

Where did you get Outlast? I can't seem to find it anywhere.

edit- Ha nm did't realize Outlast is just a regular PC game.

Yes, I was so sick I started to get worried (lasted for days). But it's way better after that, tried to ease it in by just using for a couple of minutes at a time.. I can use the thing for 30 minutes now and not feel nausea. And it will get even better with the consumer version. The combination of sensor lag and bad IPD configuration, and lenses that are not optimal is making the dev kit a bit worse than a 1.0 version.

And of course some aspects of "vertigo" is not desirable to get rid of. I like starting up "Outerra" and place myself hanging on a huge vertical mountainside in the alps like a climber and just feel my brain trying to fight the bizarre and "dangerous" situation. It's a great rush that rips through my brain :)

Just recieved mine.

I thought I would put off the Rift until I get a new computer, but... I had to check it out. Still, my mid-2009 MacBook Pro with a NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB can't really handle any 3D games well... the frame rate sucks and the lag is too much when looking around, it breaks the immersion.
(Generally it can do light 3D games ok, but I guess the dual screen output is too much)

Are there any good demos that don't rely on 3D graphics, or that hardly demand any power?

I got my DK this week. I've tried it before and have always been a big believer but putting some real time in with it over the past couple of days has convinced me more than ever that this thing is the future. I can't wait for it to get to retail and see some real game support behind it.

In the meantime I've been amazed at the wealth of dev support already out there, so many great demos and ideas - another good sign, I think. We're barely scratching the surface of all the things this is going to be capable of, and not just in games.

I've mostly been grabbing stuff from RiftEnabled.com - are there any other resources I should be looking at? If anyone's been collecting/keeping a definitive list of the best stuff to try, please point me toward it!

Oooh, Outlast has Rift support now? How do I get my hands on that?

Asking for my wife, who is insane enough to actually want to play balls-out horror games on Rift. That's a big fat NOPE for me.

It's kinda a pain, but basically:

1. Get Outlast on Steam
2. Download TriDef 3D (there's a 14-day free trial)
3. Download the beta patch (http://tridef.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=3907)
4. Check these threads to configure it: http://www.tridef.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=4042 and http://www.tridef.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=4030

It's not native so there are some issues. FOV (I can see a black bar on the bottom but not too bad), some shadow anomalies, can't see the battery power on the cam.

Weirdly I got an email saying part of my order had shipped, as if a latency tester would be in multiple orders. I'm guessing it's just a glitch.

Also, new SDK version:

The Oculus SDK v0.2.5 has been released!
You can download it now at https://developer.oculusvr.com/?action=dl.

Release Highlights:
• Significantly improved tilt and magnetic yaw correction.
• Oculus Config Utility must now be used for magnetic calibration, as it collects more data. Removed manual calibration support.
• Added sensor firmware update to the Config Utility. Updated firmware to reduce drift.

I'm at PlayExpo in Manchester about to try one out. Omgomg! I'm 5 behind in the queue, I've been waiting an hour and a half. This will be my first try with it. Please don't disapoint.

I just downloaded the latest SDK, downloaded the DirectX SDK (which seemed to possibly work despite an install error which would apparently require a kind of annoying workaround), and started from one of the example programs.

I now have a simple utility which simulates mouse events so I could fake head tracking in Project CARS. Unfortunately there's no split rendering, but I just wanted to try this as a proof of concept. :P

I never figured out how to get the LogText API working with the Oculus SDK though. Does it log to the screen or something instead of the console or a text file?

How was it? I'm going tomorrow, I'll change my streetpass message to something related to NeoGaf.

So has anybody with a dev kit tried the Rift while smoking Marijuana yet? Just wondering if it enhanced the experience and fool your brain more so then while sober? Or did it mess you up?
