Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 announced, up for preorder (based on Crystal Cove)

So lets say that consumer version is 1440p/90fps, which it sounds like it will be.

That's gonna require something properly powerful. I know we'll have better GPU's and whatnot later this year and 2015, but there will still likely be plenty of people that don't have the kind of hardware to power this without some massive compromises.

So, would playing in 1080p still be feasible? Or will the scaling ruin the image or create some other problem that I have no idea about?

Why does Nvidia has to be late for their 800 series, I want a 880 to replace my 570 SLI.. >.<"
Guess I might end up taking a 780 for (a few?) month... ( well I actually already thought about doing so for Star citizen dof fighting module, guess it's just another good reason )
Because die-shrinks are a bitch :(

If they're really gonna take that long I might invest in a 780 or 770 when this ships. I was looking at the 780 ti, but that is crazy money for a video card.

It would likely look worse than normal upscaling since you're so close.

Killzone-style temporal-reprojection might be an option for reducing rendered resolution without as many upscaling artifacts.

Scaling adds lag overhead and will also reduce the sharpness of the image both of which are very detrimental to a good VR experience. On the positive side however, experiences for the Oculus Rift would be built with the Rift in mind so performance at 1440p90 will be the consideration.

Playeddddd it.

Close to Valve's, but not quite. Positional tracking had a few small jumps, but only rarely. Couch Knights was strangely impressive. Valkyrie was cool, but pretty mechanically simple. Hope they beef it up.

what are the developer kit resources like? I'm relatively new to game development so I'm wondering how much I could actually get done with a kit

What would you say is the biggest difference between this and Valve's prototype?

The fact that Feep says this is pretty close to Valve's prototype is amazing.

Can't wait for the retail version.

Yeah, but it's totally worth it!

I haven't come across a single game my 780Ti does not destroy at max settings at 1080P. In fact, I am downsampling most of my games since I have so much extra processing headroom.

Ordered.
Refraining myself to buy the DK1 was surprisingly difficult, couldn't wait anymore. Only 75$ for shipping and taxes to my contry, getting the total price to 300 euros: not too bad!

Based on the dates here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...tcolid=-1&sortasc=true&page=1&rowsperpage=250

Ordering ~5 hours after page went up, I'd say I'm in the 2nd or 3rd batch, should be shipped within 2 weeks after first orders.

Hope we'll get details on the pre-orders and production projections from Oculus. Anyways, if I get get my hands on mine around september (i.e 6 month from now) I'll consider myself happy. Now, somebody please help me freeze myself.

Whats the diff between the 780 ti and the 780?

Whats the diff between the 780 ti and the 780?

The 780Ti has 25% more processing cores and texture mapping units. 2880 compared to 2304, and 240 compared to 192 respectively.

The GDDR5 memory is also clocked at 7GHz instead of 6GHz.

Overclocking headroom is also increased due to a better power delivery system.

I would jump on the 780 ti if I know it can handle the consumer version of OR.

I want to order it but I was shocked by the VAT and Shipping.

350$ for Oculus
55$ shipping
85$ VAT

Makes a total of $490 dollars to ship it to me, and for 350 dollars i've would buy it (and a bit extra for shipping) but 490 dollars is a bit to much for a extra "toy"

Damn, EU people are getting shafted.. That's insane. And here I was pissed off about our 20 dollar shipping. Lol

Just said FUCK IT and ordered a DK2 lol.

A question though, is there any way for the Rift to be used as a standard HDMI device? Could I plug my PS4 into it and just use it as a standard screen?

Competion is good. Monopolies arent.
People love to repeat this crap as if it was something deep and meaningful and they never stop to think about how that's not necessarily true.

Not all competition is for the better. In this case for instance we have a start-up company working on an open standard on open platforms, and what's coming along to compete is a big corporation which is (probably) going to throw its weight and its brand at it and supersede inclusivity with exclusivity, introducing in the process fragmentation to an emerging technology.
Hardly the kind of competition from which will benefit the customers.

Is this Dev Kit 2 pre-built?

My friend told me if you got the first dev version they released you had to build it your self?

So do you need to do any soldering or stuff or is this just ready to go?

Look at what Ubisoft said, they're not jumping in on VR till there is a consumer base. That consumer base is more guaranteed with Sony coming in than without.

Add to that, Sony is the only major publisher who will be developing native AAA VR games. That can only be good for gamers.

Stop with this bullshit bias against Sony. Both Sony and OR getting into VR can only be good.

It's good for developers of VR experiences, at the very least. The more platforms there are, the more sales and exposure their ideas will get.

OculusVR going into full meltdown-panic mode with Sony revealing the Morpheus.

Oculus' days are numbered, and they know it.

Not that I give a damn about what Ubisoft is going to do, for a start.
There was no concern about plenty of other developers being ready to support OR, on the other hand.

Even taking that as truth, that's hardly something I would be willing to cheer about, unless Sony is willing to support its devices even on other platforms, especially open ones, with both drivers and software.
Which I'm guessing it's not going to happen.

Spoken like a true beanie wearer!

Unless Sony is especially.... Microsoft-ish about exclusivity agreements for VR content on PS4, which I don't imagine would happen, most VR content will probably go on both platforms because why not. Porting between different VR headsets doesn't seem to be especially hard, especially since both are conceptually the same. Sony first-party stuff might not make it over, but it shouldn't be a massive issue since I think third-party software will greatly outnumber both Sony and Oculus's first party offerings.

Worst-case scenario is running into a PC-porting situation like we had at the tail end of last gen because of the increasing performance gap between gaming PCs and the PS4.

So, I can't be a fan of both Sony and OR? I just dropped 370 bones on the DK2 and planning on upgrading my video card along with planning on getting the Morpheus.

You're the one who's seeming to be threatened by Sony for some reason. If I were you, I'd be more worried about MS buying OR outright.
