Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 announced, up for preorder (based on Crystal Cove)

HD7870 (2gig), i5 3570k @ 3.4 GHz, 8 gigs RAM, with a SSD.

Any chance I can run OR decently without major problems?

EDIT: Just recently built a mid PC, first time ever, just trying to grasp specs. I've been happy with it so far, but I'm not expecting to be able to run OR...but if i could I might just hit that order button....

OculusVR going into full meltdown-panic mode with Sony revealing the Morpheus.

Makes sense given the extremely suspicious coincidence of having this piece of new news released right after Sony's announcement.

Oculus' days are numbered, and they know it. You heard it here first, folks.

Slower than I expected, great spec for the price though.

Just think, the price is being driven up by the latency measurement hardware too.

Disappointed that there's still no concrete roadmap for the commercial product. And I suspect I'm not going to be able to use this with Steam Home Streaming, which means I'd probably be restricted to using it on my desktop in my room.

Sony's setup does seem to fit my current playstyle more.

Valve, your turn!

Really nice for development:

Did any developer talk about costs or additional workload when optimizing a game for Occulus/VR as well? How much more does it add to the total cost/dev time?

I hope VR effort in games won't be a budget killer.

Yeah man, they totally made that up overnight after seeing Sony's prototype.

Yes, they whipped up that kit and video after Sony's reveal. /Rolls eyes

What utterly ridiculous bullshit. This announcement was planned since a long time, and DK2 was planned forever.

Order confirmation page isn't working for me, I get an empty checkbox and an edit button. The submit button is not populated :/

RoadToVR's impressions here:

http://www.roadtovr.com/oculus-rift-developer-kit-2-dk2-pre-order-release-date-specs-gdc-2014/

The lenses have been improved over the DK1; they are larger and clearer across the board. The camera that ships with the device is custom made by Oculus VR, not a rebrand of some existing device. Thanks to the camera and the IR LED array, the unit is capable of positional tracking with sub-millimeter accuracy.

Next to the USB port is an unidentified port which looked to be about the size of a 3.5mm headphone jack. Oculus’ founder, Palmer Luckey, would only confirm that it was not for audio….

Dont make foolish statements like. We should be supporting both Sony and OR in VR development.

VR would make me buy a wheel and get into racing games. But that could be a $800+ investment after i upgrade my pc. Damn i need to start playing the lotto.

You know that's not what he is saying. I am sure they knew Sony was going to drop something at GDC so they came prepared.

I don't agree with him and I think there is room for both (unless Sony can get out first and work on PC)

Hot damn.

I held out on dK1 but if this becomes available I won't be able to.

Seems like a long ways off for somethIng that works so well now though. Guess they really want to have a launch lineup eh?

Star Citizen at 120fps here I come.

You almost had me for a second.

Can this be used as a monitor? Can I plug an HDMI (I presume) cable into it and the device automatically distorts the image into the fish eye shape for surround imagery? Or must each video input be programmed at source to be fish eyed? Game by game patching?

I want to plug in my PC/consoles, and play via controller. If not, is this a future feature?

hmm..didn't they said tat a second dev kit was not an option because they would have need to make a final dev kit anyway?
also, the price is rising while the release date is so far away.

maybe the project was losing momentum and so they released a second dev kit to kindle the hype?

Ordered!

Yes, the Submit/Order button was 2 pixels high and you had to tick the unlabelled box on the left. I got my e-mail confirmation though. Come to Butthead.

If you want something that you plug in and which "just works", this is not (yet) the product you want.

Do they take the money now or when it's shipped?

Looks like immediately according to my account:
