Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 announced, up for preorder (based on Crystal Cove)

The lighting in the back looks really good.

Everything looks good in the scene except the two avatars. lol By the avatars, I mean the two dudes holding the controllers.

Getting my iPad stolen today has kind of soured my excitement of ordering the Devkit yesterday. I'll get over it, but fuck.

Okay so if I am playing an Oculus game right now without the Oculus and its rendering the two scenes already, is the FPS im seeing a pretty good indicator of what I will get on the DK2?

Did you just download an Oculus-specific game, or try playing a game you already owned with an Oculus mod? I ordered a DK2 yesterday and would also like to get an idea of what kind of performance I'll be getting.

This fucking blows. Where was it?

I have no clue where or when it happened. I narrowed it down to either when I placed my bag down in a small games store to the side of the counter as they don't allow you to go upstairs with your bag, or on the way to that store.

Maybe sounds irresponsible, but it's common practice to do so there, and there were maybe 5-8 customers in there the whole time it was there and with how close to the counter there is a huge risk the friend who works there would notice it. Also had a boxed wireless headset I was looking to return elsewhere, due to crappy range, in there which may have signaled that my backpack was carrying at least something of value.

Tried the find my iPhone app, but it either doesn't work or they turned my device off. Says no devices online, even though I know for a fact the battery was almost full and the 3G was on last time I used it. So yeah, I checked the places I went to, but no dice. Could be I was a tad too careless, but it still blows.

if you head over to riftenabled.com and download some of the demos, they should load in split screen 3D, and if you run them in 1080p that will tell you what your performance is going to be like for those demos.

if you get good performance on something like Technolust, you're probably good to go. I don't get the greatest performance on that. you're looking for 75 fps as a minimum (run it without vsync if your monitor isn't 75 hz or higher.

Keep checking Find My iPad. It has to be turned on eventually and will update with location as soon as it is, but only if you are tracking it.

Sorry to read that. Times like these you wish there was a little pack of C4 in there you could remotely detonate.

just kidding, NSA bots

Will do. Thanks for that tip. After it failed to locate the device I did give it instructions to lock it down and display a message "if found, contact x", small chance that'll do anything if someone did steal it, but it's worth a shot.

Ah, thanks man. I'll definitely be loading up some demos when I get home. I'm also curious to see if putting my monitor in SBS 3D mode would make for interesting results.

You can't make it display: "I now know where you live, dickbag"?

Good plan. If it's worth it to you, file a police report. That way, if it does update with a location, the police may be able to help you get it back. I worked at Apple, had to deal with this situation regularly.

Well, at least I know that the Boiler Room demo someone here was showing off runs on my rig at 120 fps @ 1080p. lol
Tuscany Demo same thing.

Trying out some more demos to see which ones run.

yeah I wish they had gone with more cartoony/abstract representations (3d stick figure kind of thing). although I don't know, maybe that would be freaky in a way.

So help me out here, i thought about getting this and develope some type of demo to show oil companies like Pemex, Halliburton, to try and sell them something like a simulator or something similar, i haven't really thought about it but i guess i would have to try it first and then decide what would be the best use for it as a training tool. Now i know my way around software like autocad and 3ds max, and i have a close friend who is a programmer. Would that be enough for us to get started and get something like that off the ground? I already have a decent pc, i'd only need to upgrade the GPU and the cost of the rift is not high at all for the potential.

What do you say gaf, good or bad idea?

How do I run it without vsync? I don't see an option to disable it.

Simulation is the future. I think it's a good idea. Not sure if the oil sector is the best but whatever.

Just browsing RiftEnabled downloading random demos to test out, and wow - the wait will be excruciating. And worth it.

I think I will, other than that. The serial number should be somewhere in iTunes right? Or am I out of luck on that? Probably gonna wind down my discussion of it here though, as it's not really relevant to the thread, but I genuinely appreciate all the tips. If anyone has any more feel free to PM me, so it doesn't get into the way of the VR hype.

I just pulled the trigger, i have enough time till july/august to think of something. I'm sure i'll think of somehing useful, in th oil industry, i already do work for some companies(video) and they pay good money when they see something they like.

New question, what tools do i need to get familiar with if i want to do something from scratch? I'm thinking oil well simulator for schools would be big.

Bought one, still not sure if it was a mistake, but the consumer version looks so far away

Well keep in mind that the consumer version is coming next year. Do not go into DK2 thinking it will be ready for daily use or there will be tons and tons of games day one. That's what this dev period is all about. There isn't currently enough content to keep you entertained for a full year. There's tons of cool demo's though, but a very small amount of full VR games.

However, if you're either a developer or an enthusiast who is okay with the fact that they'll need to buy the consumer version next year, then it is not a mistake. :)

Does something like Vorpx do a decent job of adding VR support to non-officially supported games, or might better options come out when OR is more common?

Can't wait to play Asseto Corsa with this.

Neither can I. Anyone know what it's like in its current form? I'm sure there's a long way to go. And I'll be happy just to get a glimpse. It's my most played game at the moment, and I've put off a triple-screen setup with high hopes for the future of the Rift.

Non-VR games will always be a sub-par experience compared to native VR. I've been able to load up Skyrim in my Rift, and it's pretty cool, but far from a completely playable VR experience. Shadows are completely borked and have to be disabled, UI is sometimes unreadable, and there's other random issues as you play. Some games are better than others, but a lot of times you need to fiddle with the game for a while before it's comfortable. Not to mention that since the games weren't designed for VR, sometimes they'll move the camera around (such as a knockback effect), or do other things which work fine in non-VR but are nauseating when viewed in VR.

So they do "work", but I would never recommend someone buy a Rift with the main intention of playing driver injection VR games. I tend to load it up, go to a certain section and just try to look around and not do much gameplay. The vistas in Skyrim for example are glorious to behold.

Vsync eliminates tearing but adds latency. Pick your poison.

I'm only recommending it to people who have 60 hz monitors that want to see if they're hitting 75 fps or higher to gauge how things are going to work when they get their dev kit. everyone is going to want vsync on!

it looks like most of these demos force it on though, even if you have it disabled in your graphics card drivers.

these things are a decent way of playing a game in 3D with head tracking, but do not expect them to give you a true VR experience. they don't. it's almost impossible to get anything approaching a true sense of 1:1 scale with driver injection, and without that, it just isn't VR.

if a game is open source like Doom 3, Quake 3, Quake et al, there is probably a good mod that gives you a close to true VR experience, but aside from that, you're only really going to be enjoying VR in your old games if the developers go back and implement it as valve have with TF2 and the Half Life 2 games.

God I cannot wait to try out Euro Truck Simulator 2 with my G27 and the DK2.. I know I'll definitely need to upgrade my graphics card though.

I ended up just turning off vsync through the driver, and Technolust at 1080 gave me an average of 65-70. At times it went higher, upwards of 85. I take it I should avoid the DK2?

No, that's probably close enough for most things. You can always set the DK2 refresh to 60 hz (I believe) on games that can't quite sustain 75. I'm sure Palmer quoted it as supporting multiple refresh rates.

I'm not sure if mine went through, I clicked on the box that asked for confirmation that I wanted to charge card/order etc and it just sent me back to the billing info screen. No e-mail as of yet, just curious if this is the same bug other people were having with the ordering earlier, and how long it took them before receiving a confirmation e-mail. Don't want to order it twice by accident and be charged twice is all.

Played around with some demos. All 60 fps without even making my gpu break a sweat.

Here I thought I'd have to replace my 670 later this year.

Here is a question:

How many more prototypes will there be before the final device is released?

I cant imagine any more than 1 or maybe 2.

This is the final dev kit that will be available before the consumer version.

Oculus will make many, many prototypes leading up to the CV. Whether we see any of them is another question.

My guess is that we'll see one more prototype that will be spec complete to the CV, but will not be final design of the unit (in similar fashion as to Crystal Cove being the same specs as DK2, but not the same design/polish). Then at least we should hopefully see the final unit (hopefully with pre-orders same day).

What video card do you have?

570. I was hoping to continue using it for another couple of years which is why I really don't want to upgrade just for the Rift.

Good to know. Most of what I want to play are indie games so they aren't very demanding.

The one with the dedicated 750M, yes. You'll be able to try many OR demos in 720p and some in 1080p as well. In the office here we run OR on a 5850 machine and I've been generally happy with the results with various demos.

If you have rMBP with intel only, then probably still some demos will run fine in 720p. A lot of OR demos are really simple looking, but still effective when you play them. Conversely, the problems with original OR are not really remedied with better graphics, so the experience is not limited much by that.

Interesting. Thanks so much for the answer! Yes, it's the one with the dedicated 750M that I was curious about. My plan is to buy the updated rMBP that will likely release in Fall 2014. It sounds like it will have Broadwell, which I'm hoping makes it more powerful. So hopefully the newest one will be able to handle even more OR experiences.

Judging from my experience running games on boot camp with mine I'd say no.

Running regular games or running games with the OR? Because regular games seem to run great on that computer from my experience.

Sorry: would have combined my two posts but I wasn't sure how to edit in a second quote to a post that I had already posted.
