Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 announced, up for preorder (based on Crystal Cove)

Come to think of it, with so many people cancelling their pre-order, I think anyone who pre-ordered in the first few hours of the 19th are a shoo-in to be in the first batch.

That's a positive. :p

People are actually doing this?

I was legitimately disgusted and still have a horrible feeling about the future of Oculus after the Facebook announcement, but at the very least DK2 is going to be more of the same. Whatever Facebook has planned for the future, it's not going to impact hardware being shipped in mere weeks.

Look at the subreddit and even here in GAF. There seems to have been plenty who have cancelled their pre-orders.

You're right. Quick people, cancel your orders now! Facebook is evil!
*ordered on the 19th at 9:06AM and hopes to move further up the list*

As for the DK2, too bad the extra funding wont kick in to speed up manufacturing the kits, I want it early. :p
Yes, I know money will not speed up the manufacturing of the DK.

it might

i hope it does

i really want my DK2

Okay, honest question. What is the minimum graphics card I should even be looking at to successfully use the upcoming dev kit? I have a 6870 that is obviously a world away from being sufficient. I always watch slickdeals, but I have no idea about graphics cards or a good price for them.

Man I'm pretty excited for the news. Even more so for the people that could have cancelled their kits! I ordered on day it went on pre-order but due to Australian time zone not until 2pm. I might get bumped up the list :)

It seems like the subreddit is on the repentance cycle of typical reddit drama right now, and when people cool down I think most of the people who knee-jerk canceled out of rage or to brag for upvotes on reddit will probably re-order (and for the same reasons they ordered in the first place).

Everyone moves up a couple of spots in line though

I only started frequenting Reddit recently, is it always that bad regarding the amount of drama? I was amazed by it to be honest.

I found /r/circlejerk yesterday which was amazing.

This is ostensibly a developer kit. Developers should be buying it because they want to develop games they can sell on the platform. Hence, their perception of the future of the platform may impact whether it seems like a good investment. If they doubt that they will be able to sell their game on Oculus, it makes more sense to invest those resources into developing for Morpheus or holding off on VR development all together until they have more confidence.

Basically, yes. What's amusing is that they get angry with NeoGAF saying we're just one big hive mind. Then, they down vote all opinions on Reddit they do not like or do not agree with the current "trend", leading to only agreeable opinions being seen. It's remarkable.

Yesterday was the first i've experienced something like that and it was crazy. Like the 'hive mind' went into overdrive. Was really dissapointing to see Palmer being downvoted for answering questions regarding everything.

Yeah, basically all the big reddit communities are various flavors of shit and continually embarrass themselves, but no amount of moderation or really self-awareness will fix it because of how reddit functions. You're only supposed to downvote stuff that's irrelevant, not stuff you disagree with, but almost nobody follows this rule and will continually downvote stuff that doesn't fit the current mob mentality (like Palmer's responses getting downvoted even though they're actually the most important comments in the subreddit).

Trying to build social interaction around group approval and disapproval really only lends to drama-mongering behavior, and all of yesterday the oculus subreddit were just basically lurkers trying to out-anger each other for upvotes.

It's a pretty good news aggregator, though.

Complete madness.. Though I do admit I had a good laugh when someone posted in /r/Oculus this morning saying that he's slept on it and thinks its not that bad a thing.

ill be ordering the DK2 but ill probably finish with that for now. not sure if ill get the CV1 as DK2 will be good enough for racing games on PC for me the Morpheus for PS4

WHEW! Thank you so much GAF, I just logged in after seeing all the (imho) disgusting behavior on Reddit, and was scared to death this place might be a circus. Happy to see folks here seem level headed.

Took less than 24 hours for the cesspool that was the Oculus subreddit to come around. I really couldn't believe it, as it was a pretty decent subreddit to browse, and Palmer frequented the place. But yesterday... Wowzers.

Those people who canceled must be feeling crunchy right now.

This thread has stayed pretty sensible, some of the others ones were pretty bad.

I get annoyed by how people here on GAF act/react sometimes regarding news, but man, I only need to spend half an hour browsing Reddit to see how god damn civil it is here by comparison.

If you want to develop VR content at all (for any upcoming platform), DK2 seems like your best shot to get started early. It has all the features expected of any VR solution, and porting between APIs should be trivial -- or you can use something like the generic HMD interface in UE4 in the first place.

But anyway, if you ordered in the first hour and a half you really should cancel.

We just outsourced the circus to other threads.

I'm dissapointed in the acquisition but not enough to cancel my order. There is already enough content coming to satisfy me even if Facebook decides to screw things up. Besides FB doesn't have enough time to do anything to DK2. Now onto a GFx card, is AMD doing anything?

Facebook is not going to screw anything up yet. In the short term everything is fine and dandy. In the long term they might but it is perfectly fine since someone would pick up their slack.

It was pretty fun trolling angry people yesterday. I tried to give people a clue on how I am not serious, yet some of them didn't catch them and kept ragging on me.

I am pretty proud of this argument in particular.
It's Facebook. They planned to invade our privacy and stuff. There is also the possibility of ads and stuff. And there is a lot of other stuff.

The only thing that might make me cancel my DK2 order would be if we get some solid hints that CV1 is coming significantly sooner than everyone expected.

If anything it'll take longer than before the Facebook acquisition if they're following through with their "we can make custom parts now!" thing

if you're that against facebook, but still want to support VR, then you should buy this devkit which is presumably being sold at or near cost, and then just publish your game for other platforms.

Better almost certainly but faster....I don't know. Couple of quotes from Palmer:
http://www.reddit.com/user/palmerluckey

This lets us make CV1 everything we want it to be, which is going to drive much larger sales and adoption.

combined with this one
We have not gotten into all the details yet, but a lot of the news is coming. The key points:
1) We can make custom hardware, not rely on the scraps of the mobile phone industry. That is insanely expensive, think hundreds of millions of dollars. More news soon.

This rather sounds like it will take a while. If they want to start manufacturing custom displays first I cannot image this would be possible before one year has passed. Which matches the following recent comment from him

A lot of people are upset, and I get that. If you feel the same way a year from now, I would be very surprised.

I know its pieced together.

The only thing that might make me cancel my DK2 order would be if we get some solid hints that CV1 is coming significantly sooner than everyone expected.

Take a look at this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NwG7OkREOQ#t=541
(was posted in oculus forums)

Palmer and Mitchell talk about what would be possible if they had 1 billion dollars to spend (on a custom display).

They say that at the time (january 2014) crystal cove was the BEST they could build even with significantly more money available. BUT with a billion $ they could buid the custom display they would want and get the ultimate sh*t. But they also say that would take very long and mention the one year again that I quoted above from Palmers reddit posts.

All this taken into account I believe that the CV1 will take 1 year at least. Maybe even to be presented. It really sounds like they want to start of with a custom display and not a 1440p standard OLED with 90Hz. Maybe they are thinking about curved displays? Maybe about uneven pixel distribution to focus on the center areas? Maybe something else crazy.

But for me everything sounds as it will take until next year to see the real CV1.
This is my best guess right now. I am exited to see what they will come up with. If something will be shown I will look back to this post if I was taking crazy stuff or not. Will be funny either way.

Sorry to bombard the thread with questions, but is a 780 for $450 a decent price, and will it likely suffice in the long term (like 4 or 5 years) for the Dev Kit 2 if I'm okay with turning down settings like lighting/water/shadows, etc.?

Well 4 or 5 years is an eternity in GPU terms. I would ask in the PC build thread: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=745567

Four years ago the GTX 480 was just being released. Today you can buy a $150 GPU that performs like a GTX 580 and uses way less power.

By 2016 we'll have stacked VRAM and crazy-fast interconnects that'll make the 780 look like old tech. Generally speaking, trying to predict 4 or 5 years ahead for PC GPUs will only end in disappointment. The 780 is a great board for today's games and will be good for normal gaming for a couple of years at least.

For VR, we don't really know because it depends on the titles that get produced. I would imagine, given the high frame-rate requirements for good VR, that we will get plenty of VR games that don't tax hardware very much. We'll also have monsters like Star Citizen, so it depends what your expectations are.

i can't decide whether or not i want to purchase a dk2.

on the one hand, the facebook acquisition really makes me want to develop something for the rift since i think their will be a big app development opportunity at launch. on the other hand, i feel like this also speeds up the release of the consumer version and maybe i should wait.

Yea i see CV1 taking a lot longer now. First impressions matter after such a huge deal went down. No way Facebook wants to compromise after shelling 2 billion (wow!) for the Oculus debut.

some non-reference 780s run at or better than the gtx titan. occulus rift is all about hitting at least 60fps right now. maybe 75 or 90fps for the final version. hitting 90fps with everything maxed at 1080p is no problem for 99% of games out there. hitting 60fps at 1440p is no problem either.

and you can always oc your gtx 780 even further.

I won't lie. We have had a number of people cancel their DK2 pre-orders. They are totally free to do that, if they want. We aren't going to stop them. However, after the initial "knee-jerk-reaction surge" a lot of people have came back and told us NOT to cancel their order since they don't want to lose their place in line. Funny how that happens.

LOL

I hope their place is already lost. If they ordered in the first 1.5 hours that is :P

Actually 75 FPS for DK2, almost certainly more for CV1.

I do expect the consumer version of the Rift to take longer than expected to be released...but how awesome will it be?! Meanwhile, my pre-purchase of the DK2 sounds way less crazy.

Yeah I'm in the 'GPU upgrade needed camp' currently. I'll wait for as long as I can though, no point jumping the gun before I even get DK2. My 570 at the moment is adequate enough.

Now I want them to announce that the DK2 will be released sooner than expected, that the CV will not be before 2015 ( so that my purchase seems less crazy ), and before I wake up ( since so many good news could only mean that I'm dreaming ) that nvidia intend to release the 880 the day the DK2 get dispatched.

Screen door effect doesn't look bad at all on the DK2

I'm considering cancelling because the fact that Facebook owns it now means it'll be cheaper part wise, and they may want to take a decent loss on it to get the product out. I was okay with getting it a year early for like $70 more (figured oculus rift retail would be $300), but the oculus could end up being at like $200 or something.

I got the same card, im just going to order a EVGA card when my DK2 ships and hope Maxwell comes out within 90 days so i can use the step up program.

If you're going to develop for VR, then get the DK2. If you're not, don't get it.

It's what they've been saying all this time - and the launch of the DK2 isn't magically going to make more content ready and appear for it.

This acquisition was very likely already happening behind the scenes when they gave their vague road plan for the consumer version. I doubt that's changed, give or take a month.
