Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 announced, up for preorder (based on Crystal Cove)

I was somewhat disappointed by the news initially, but I left my DK2 preorder in, I feel they're looking at the acquisition as a springboard towards achieving a more successful product how they intend it to be than scraping by.

Obviously there's always the potential for things to go pear shaped but with the DK2 more or less set in stone, I'm happy with its specifications and capabilities for the short term regardless of what the future holds.

Come to think of it, with so many people cancelling their pre-order, I think anyone who pre-ordered in the first few hours of the 19th are a shoo-in to be in the first batch.

That's a positive. :p

Considering the amount of investment that they just got I would expect them to ship all preorder for release day, they're not a small company any more :p

That pic floating around above is so great to look at. Honestly, July (and the 6Gb 780's) can't come soon enough!

With all the dystopian-future, Facebook-is-the-Hunger-Games bullshit, I'm hoping all those emotionally charged cancellations lead me to the front. I'm almost positive I'm in the first 500 or so anyway, so hopefully mine will be the first out the door! The $350 price tag is almost worth it just to play HL2 like this.

What are we expecting CV1's res to be? Is 1440p reasonable?

My bet is because of the recent acquisition, it's definitely probable. Not only is that probable, but they'll probably hit Valve's "presence" specs with ease, along with a new standard control scheme built from the ground up. Maybe I'm expecting too much now in terms of quality...but they do have some serious funding now.

Yeah really, its almost worth it between that and Slender (cant wait to see my friends play that with the rift ;P)

There's also s bunch of others like Euro Truck Simulator.

And on top of it all I get to look at the SDK!

And C) I don't freak out and make financial decisions while flustered.

Seriously, we have until JUNE to cancel. And people were cancelling from the announcement alone.

D) Facebook will have no effect on DK2. No need to worry about this product.

E) Edit - Back to point B: DK1 people look like they're having a blast and DK2 is a big improvement on its shortcomings. I'm not waiting until mid-2015 to enjoy some good VR if I don't have to.

I thought the Rift HD was good enough and this is even better so fuck no am I waiting until next year for VR. Plus the PC specs to run DK2 are going to be lower than CV1 meaning I can hold out on upgrading for a little longer.

No way I'm cancelling my order! I'm not a programmer but I'm gonna put my art skills to good use with this thing.

Something I've been thinking about is releasing environments that would normally be portfolio fodder for env artists in image form as VR experiences - just little things that would be interesting to just look at in VR. It could be a nice way for people to get their work out to others.

e: eg this kind of stuff

I'm interested in this as well, at least at first. Some comfy environments with some music/sound.

I cancelled my order, I'm having small pangs of regret. But I'd rather have regret now than a year in the future when I realise I paid more for worse specs just to get it a little bit earlier.

someone needs to make a game like planetary annihilation, but on the inside of a planet instead of the outside.

you're welcome, developers

I'm betting the wait will turn out to be a year from DK2 (August 2015 or later).

Yep, me too. I'm thinking that I'm going to most probably going to have a year of fun with the DK2 before we see CV1. My "worst case" scenario is 6-12 months of DK2-fun. Which probably is a safe prediction. I've spent more money on far worse things than this that had a much shorter lifespan, so.. why the hell not.

Anyway, the facebook deal is growing on me, even though I was "threatening" to cancel my pre-order.. who would've thought.. Short term facebook is going to do wonders for VR. Long term, monetizing.. who knows.. at least at that crossroad VR should have legs on its own.

I got my DK1 in the first shipment last March and I just eBayed it for $10 less than I originally paid. If anyone's on the fence about getting a DK2 or to wait, keep in mind that you will probably be able to recoup most of the cost if you keep it in good condition and sell it before the consumer version hits.

I ordered pretty late in the day. Hopefully the Facebook acquisition will ramp up the production and shipments of DK2. One could assume they have an interest in getting the kits in developers hands as quickly as possible.

I did something similar a while back.
Bought a second hand DK1, played around with it for a month or so and then sold it off for the same price I paid.

Wait, do the 780 Ti 6 GB not release until July?

No, they should be out sooner, they were just announced a week or two ago, though. I just mentioned July because that's when I'll be hopefully getting one barring in any budget issues since it's going to be a spendy upgrade. That's about $350 for DK2 and $550 for the card. Might be hard to swing that all in a month!

Ah. I used Paypal on the DK2 so that's already charged itself. Just gotta worry about the card now. Any reason you're not going for the Ti?

Ha, mainly $200, for what (I think) is a minimal difference. Most reports on the rift forums and various other gaming sites show about a 6-8% increase in FPS and such.

I plan on doing EVGA because of their 'step-up' program if something comes out within the 90 days (plus their support is pretty solid). You can look at the price ranges here:

http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/video-card/#c=136,153&sort=a1&m=14

Toms Hardware showed at 2560x1440p - 40FPS vs 49FPS on BF4 on Ultra settings.

I mean, I would love to get a Ti for that extra 'kick' but just not sure if there's a $200 kick there. I'm already extremely weary of going over $500 for a video card ...

Almost 10 frames difference. Lol I guess for some that would be plenty for an "upgrade" from the vanilla version.

Yeah, don't get me wrong. It's a pretty decent jump, I think it's about 68 vs 75 or so for 1080p ... but man, $500 for a video card, then thinking about $700+? Add to that all the "kickstarter" and indie games I'll need to buy and play with.

After getting the DK2 pre-order and money set aside, I have about $800 I can "dump" into this "hobby" (lol) but that includes possibly a new control system and such.

performance-wise, totally worth it if $200 doesn't sting. For me, my last video card itself was $240 (HD6870 when it launched) and that stung!

If one preorders do you get charged instantly or when item ships?

Pay-Pal = Instant
CC = $50 now, rest when it ships

Oh, and saw this on reddit, I'm not against the FB acquisition but the video is pretty funny (plus I love the song playing in the background)

Don't worry 200 dollars stings like hell.. It's just that I keep thinking if I go big, might as well go as big as possible.

That and Maxwell is looking less likely for me and wanting to wait for Pascal.

By your powers combined!

Hah!

I have one concern. Don't you Guys think anything above 1080p is a bit of hard sell for the mainstream? Not everyone has a top of the line PC like most of us do. I'm sure oculus is very concerned about people getting sick or having choppy ass experiences.

Asking people to buy 780s for a smooth experience is recipe for disaster.

By the time CV1 releases, a 780 equivalent will be a mid ranged card and it will only get better from there. Also there is nothing stopping them releasing multiple SKUs.

Native resolution isn't as important for the Rift as it is for a regular monitor. Remember, the lenses mean that you're always looking at distorted pixels so image scaling will not be as noticeable. A higher resolution screen will also be useful for reducing the screen door effect of lower resolution screens, even if you're upscaling.

So a 1440p screen or whatever will be better for everyone, not just those that can take full advantage of it.

The folks from Hello Games (No Man's Land) twittered that they were receiving new VR helmets. This Video has been posted by them:

It does not look like the DK2 but also not like DK1. What is it? Preproduction models?

https://twitter.com/NoMansSky/statuses/451705851146141696

Visually it looks like a mix between the DK1 and the HD prototypes (not crystal coves)

Not sure, could be an internal prototypee with some new features not yet demonstrated.

edit: looking at it again, propably the old HD prototype to serve as a stepping stone for devs between the DK1 and DK2

Weren't those the prototypes brought to E3?
