Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 announced, up for preorder (based on Crystal Cove)

One more thing about that simulator: they should really add the option to simulate different levels of AA. High-quality AA can make a huge difference for DK1 (and I presume DK2 as well).

I certainly hope something like the more advanced versions of SMAA are widely available by the time the consumer version hits.

Can someone tell if astigmatism causes problems with the Oculus Rift? I'm pondering whether I should order one or not but rather hear from someone with experience first. My eyesight isn't that bad, as I can still see most things clear enough, but I don't want to get a severe headache from playing twenty minutes.

That's be interesting to know, I suppose you could use different steenghth lenses for the left and right eye

almost 500 with shipping tax... oh well

Can someone here on Gaf receive for me than send it to Brazil as a gift? I don't think it would cost 150 bucks that way...

:(

Serious question, how much is the shipping cost to USA?

I am expecting the consumer version to let you keep on your glasses like Sony's Project prometheus, since there are allot of people with glasses.

The lenses distort and set your eyes to look at infinity, so your eyes should react the same way to the screen in the rift as they would to the real world.

The different lenses that come with the kit rift won't really help you allot because you might have totally different deviations, so of possible I would suggest you to keep your glasses. if they are large glasses I would suggest getting smaller prescription glasses.

in the end its a case to case sistuation, its hard to tell what works best for you.

Ou? I like that name better than that of this old tech version Morpheus ;)

well there's always displayport
With DP1.3 at least though that's not expected until Q2 2014 at the very least.
Both DP1.2 and HDMI 2.0 will be able to do 1440p120, but the Oculus people aren't even shooting that high at this moment for 2015 so you'd wait for upgrades down the line where the connectivity issue might not be present.

Man do I want this...even without a computer that will run it.

2015 is going to require Morpheus, CV1 and a suitably powered PC. Thankfully I can save cash by no longer mixing with the real world!

So... Basically, all of Gaf has ignored what Oculus told us to do which is wait... Lol

Oculus said not to buy if you're not a developer for DK1 too. I believe it is more to discourage people who are expecting a true finished product with little to no problems, that's easy to setup/use, and with games to play on. These would be the people who, after encountering the troubles and limitations, would go around badmouthing the product and VR in general.

Actual developers will be left with no kits to buy which will hamper the number of games built for the Rift.

Developers would have been contacted by oculus in advance of general release to indies/enthusiasts. They will always be wise to reserve units to get to those guys working on the big projects before running out of units.

I therefore believe the main reason Palmer said what he said is simply because he doesn't want people disappointed (as some were with DK1) esp when consumer version comes out. They don't need the hassle of people who don't fully accept/understand it's not a consumer project taking up their time with complaints.

Even before the announcement of DK2 I always thought that they should never put DK2 out without at least giving a SPECIFIC release for a CV. If you tell people here is the better version of what has excited large parts of the gaming industry (and others) but the one you should buy is ~1 year away, what do you expect people to do?

Is anyone working on a Virtual Boy emulator to use with this? It would be perfect for it!

It's been a while since I've used it, but someone released one within a couple of weeks of DK1's release and it is awesome. The screen door effect actually adds to the experience.

Damn ... I guess the GTX 770 is the minimum spec for DK2/CV1

A GTX 770 is probably the minimum spec that would be OK. I wouldn't go any cheaper than that.

Yea, I sort of agree, but they have said they are currently locking down the specs now and then they have to wait for the parts to get manufactured. So I am still hoping to see a CV1 announcement at E3 with preorders to start shipping in holiday 2014.

It's not really that simple unfortunately. It depends on what software you're running and what CPU you use.
Some games/demos you might be able to turn down a lot of settings (remember that good VR doesn't need graphical bells and whistles to be convincing).

Having said that, if you turn off most visual extras, the game will become CPU limited and if your CPU can't produce at least 60fps (72 or 75fps preferably), then you're out of luck entirely.

Thing is, although I've not tried it, I'm told that some of the best DK1 experiences were in Doom 3 and HL2. Surely you run these games at 75fps with even modest modern CPUs and GPUs?

I'm not worried about my CPU yet personally. I have an i7 2600k which will last me still a good bit. I'm pretty sure even my 5970 would be able to play HL2 and Doom. I'm talking more modern games really.

I am planning on spending circa $4000 on a PC build later this year. Not including new monitor. Around December, unless a major hardware shift is just around the corner.

The rift is the main reason why. Hawken runs like ass in VR on the DK1 for me. I know my PC can handily play Doom 3 and HL2 on DK2, but yeah... clearly things are going to be out of reach... and when I think about Star Citizen and how that makes my HD7970 sound (like a lawnmower) with just the HANGAR module.

Well... clearly VR is going to be an expensive hobby on the PC.

edit: oh, and you asked about controllers. I'd wait to see what games are offering what. I have the hydras and only a few of the tech demoes really leverage them, but those that do are very cool. The Gallery is going to support them quite nicely. HL 2 has a really nice mod that lets you use them... mostly though I'm either standing with a pad, or sitting with mouse and keys. Doom 3 and HL2 both play really nicely with mouse and keys. It's not as weird as you'd think.

Nvidia and ATI are surely as excited about VR as we are.

well it's another reason for an ubergpu to add to the list of surround gaming, 4K and 120 HZ. most of those high end cards always have disclaimers in reviews about how they aren't worth getting if you have a 1080p monitor. VR is going to want *locked* high framerates at 1440p with TWO view ports. I mean... yeah.

I started saving for this PC over a year ago. I knew this was coming :)

Jesus christ. What you got planned man? Dual 880's or some shit?

Also scary to hear that a 7970 isn't cutting it for ya with a DK1.

My 750 ti really should be just fine at playing things on Medium with a good amount of AA. Though if the 870 hits before the DK2 I will just get that or the 880 and sell my 750 Ti.
I dunno man. A 750Ti isn't all that powerful by PC standards.

This dude up here says a 7970 is giving him trouble! With the 720p version!

My GPU upgrade will come depending on when CV1 is released. I'm gonna put it off as long as possible.

I am fine with Low to Medium settings with AA until the 800 series hits. Not dropping $300+ on a new card when the 800 series really should not be THAT far away. I would just get a R9 290 or 290x right now if bitcoin wasn't a thing.

I don't blame you for wanting to wait, but just remember that its not as simple as running a game in 1080p/60fps.

You'll probably be fine if you stick with older or less demanding games, but stuff like Star Citizen or Hawken might be out of reach with a 750Ti. My estimation, at least. Could be wrong.

I can do half life 2 and other less demanding games before I step into Hawken :)
