Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 announced, up for preorder (based on Crystal Cove)

I wrote Ocean Rift. The problem is it runs at 100+ fps on my modest machine (580 GTX), and all the others I've tested it on. For some reason in runs really poorly on other (much faster) machines, never have quite figured out why. I suspect it has something to do with the complex water surface, although even that is based on a stock Unity Pro asset.

It looks like he's running crossfire.. until amd/nvidia provide drivers we've been warn to stay away. or disable sli/crossfire when using oculus

Anyone expecting the 780 Ti 3 GB to drop in price because of Nvidia's announcement? I'm actually wondering would it help for VR performance to have the extra memory?

Well, as it currently stands the Rift wastes a ton of screen resolution that the player doesn't see; if they could adjust the optics to use more pixels per eye, they could increase the visible resolution without altering the actual screen resolution.

It has recently gotten popular to talk about the "wasted" resolution on the RIft, but I really don't get what they are supposed to do about it. Some physical pixels are wasted, yes, but that's impossible to avoid as long as we are dealing with a rectangular display.

You don't think it's possible to adjust the optics (the lenses) to display a larger percentage of the screen at all? You think they've maxed out what lenses and mirrors are capable of with DK1&2?

The lenses could certainly be better in terms of optical properties (aberration etc.), but I don't think you can get significantly more effective resolution out of a given display, while providing the same FoV, and without increasing the size or weight of the device.

Even if the display was curved I don't think it would change the situation all that much. You "lose" most physical pixels in the corners.

Is it possible to create a lens that allows for a wider field of view when paired with a curved display?

Of course, it wouldn't work so well when you swivel your eyes to look at the corners - but in terms of offering information in the periphery - maybe it's not so out of the question?

I'm running crossfire yes. But will I actually gain performance if I disable it?

You will not gain performance, you will lose some (fps), but you will eliminate the extra latency induced by the way Crossfire works.

I won't pretend to understand exactly why and how it does that but it apparently adds at least a frame of latency and I know for a fact that if I forget to disable Crossfire, I immediately notice it as soon as I'm entering the Rift. It's painfully obvious. It's almost like it flickers when you look around. Maybe not the best way to describe it but it's not smooth at all.

tldr; Friends don't let friends Rift and Crossfire.

That's normal. If your body is moving and you are not controlling it or even looking in the direction you are moving you get motion sickness very fast.

It honestly depends on the person. I'm fairly immune to motion sickness. While some people i know get sick looking at the ocean.

If you're someone who gets motion sick easily keep some Saltines or Potato Chips and your favorite carbonated beverage at the ready.

Im not prone to motion sickness but i did experience initially using DK1. A neat little trick that worked well for me was to bob my head a little while i was walking in game. After a few sessions, i didnt experience any more nausea and quit bobbing my head. I was able to stay in for a couple hours at a stretch and possibly longer.

Honestly I'll just wait for this to hit the masses and see what comes of it from the motion sickness compare to the 1st version. I hope its a huge turn around.

Yes, I know that.. I was talking about him able to move his view off center when looking behind.
I think the positional tracking works by combining the camera data and the gyros/accelerometers in the headset, so if you momentarily move out of camera view, the software is able to continue estimating what you're doing from just the sensors in the headset, and will correct itself once the camera finds the dots again. I'm sure if you do any strange movements while out of view, or stay out of view for more than a couple of seconds, there will be a significant amount of drift to correct.

Don't think he ever gets into a position where the camera can't see the LEDs. There are LED's on the sides of the headset after all.

Oh I forgot that simple fact (ir LEDs at the side). embarrassing. . Thanks for reminding me :)

So in reality there are only a few degrees missing, which is "predicted" by an algorithm. Good news for me then because that will work perfectly fine until CV1. Can't wait to get this thing up and running.

Do not expect a price drop for the 780 Ti 3GB. This is just the same exact board with increased VRAM. Performance for the 3 and 6GB versions will be identical in the vast, vast majority of gaming scenarios, so no price cut is warranted.

This new board will be priced between 780 Ti 3GB and Titan Black.

Nice little detail from the ModRetro forum that Palmer Luckey founded. At the time the kickstarter became big with mainstream media coverage and all there was a forum thread to congratulate him.
In this thread the user Mario (Nate Mitchell?) said he worked with Luckey and said the following:

I would wait for the retail version if you're not going to develop with it. The consumer one will be much, much nicer. Higher res, less latency, etc.

This was august 2012 ;) The sound of that line has not changed but 1.5 years have passed.

Exactly why I decided to have some fun with the DK1 and now DK2 while I'm waiting :)

I had more than my money's worth with the DK1, and I'm capable to understand the difference between a finished and an unfinished product, so why the hell not.

thanks.

hmm..

You jump in yet?

I got it two hours after pre-orders opened.

you guys are a bad influence

Pretty much this. lol Unless the top end 20nm Maxwells get announced tomorrow, I'm gonna be ponying up for a 780 Ti.

I really hope it comes in a cool box again.
When I sold off my DK1 I was really considering doing the auction without including it.

Kinda having pre-orderers remorse on this :-/

Building a PC is gonna cost a lot...

Buy parts from the B/S/T thread here to save some money. You'll regularly be able to find a GPU and oftentimes a MOBO in there.

Also, think of it as an investment. You're paying more now, but you'll be saving tons of money down the line thanks to Steam, GMG, various bundles, etc.

Hah! I probably spend more money on games now I have a PC than I used to, due to all those sales.

We're going to focus on helping Oculus build out their product and develop partnerships to support more games. Oculus will continue operating independently within Facebook to achieve this.
Don't freak out guys. Oculus Rift will be huge, it will be 1000 times bigger than anything we could ever imagine.

I really tempted to cancel my order for DK2, anyone if it's possible?
I'm also tempted to, but not because of the facebook aquisition but because I think I'll be patient and wait for the consumer version. Anyone know how to cancel? I think I'll buy a beefy new gpu first.
