Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 announced, up for preorder (based on Crystal Cove)

Hey guys, I had the same question regarding credit card info. I'll paste the Support's reply:

"Unfortunately, we're unable to modify billing information at this time.
If the system is unable to collect the remaining funds from the original credit card, you will receive an email stating that your order is pending payment.
At that time, you can add another payment method before the order is processed.
Please note that there will not be a delay in sending you the Rift, if you update your payment method immediately.
Sorry for the inconvenience,

Kelly

Man this just makes me glad I went with Paypal. Anyway, hope they give us an update tomorrow.

Hopefully my GTX 670 will be good enough to run some games and demos at decent settings. Don't wanna upgrade my card until the consumer version is out.

I'm in the same situation, especially because IMO there's no true valuable upgrade for my OC'd 660 Ti at the moment, the 7-series is just disappointment all over, and I've seen very little interesting info about the 8-series as well :(

I just bought Asetto Corsa and a G27 wheel, I hope there's a way to drive that @75Hz with my 660 Ti.. But I don't know, I'm afraid that it might not be enough..

20-30% VR overhead + 25% 60-->75 Hz increase is about 50% more power needed, no?

what exactly is it about DK2 that requires greater performance than DK1? honest question.

Quoting myself from the previous page

me said:
Dk1 is 1280x800 @60Hz = 61.5m pixels per second

DK2 is 1920x1080 @75Hz = 155.5m pixels per second

CV1 is expected to be 2560x1440 @90Hz = 331.7m pixels per second

So over 2x the number of pixels to be calculated and drawn as you move from model to model. The consumer version is going to need a beast of a PC to run modern games well - don't forget you won't want frame drops so you'll want a cushion over that 90Hz too.

bj00rn_, can't you tell assetto corsa to run I oculus mode now, to try it out? Or does it check for the hardware?

The thread keeps getting bumped because people are starting to feel the excitement. We'll hear something today, I'm sure.
Once the news is out that they start shipping, we need a new thread and this and that thread need to be closed so we have one place for all that Rift discussion again.
Keeping track of multiple threads is tedious.

Thinking about it, a general Rift OT would be nice.

Will I be able to run games in VR smoothly with my current setup?

Evga GTX 780
Intel i5 4670K 4C/4T
16GB of RAM

you have a better chance than most people :)

I would think you'd be fine with the DK2, and possibly the consumer version but you might not be able to use max settings. I'm not sure anyone will be able to use max settings in all games on the consumer version. Well, maybe Smokey :P

Would I need an i7 and a SLI setup?

Senza Peso is like, the third VR demo from the K+L guys. They're clearly into VR in a big way. They also did the The Cave (the Batcave with a huge holographic interface), and The Station (which includes The Cave).

You don't need the game to run at 75 fps to get benefit from setting the Oculus to 75 hz and have strobing turned on.

Just in case ... remember:

Re: If I order a DK2 now.....

Just to be clear, we probably won't be sending out a mass email on July 1st. My comment was in reference to a post I plan to make in the forum (and probably Reddit) regarding the DK2 shipping status. Basically it will be a new DK2 Shipping thread with the most recent information at that time. Sorry for any confusion.

Bought Asetto Corsa as well during the Steam sale. Need to stock up on VR games before the dev kit arrives.

Dunno about the power needed, suppose I just try and scale back the setting until I find a sweet spot.

My 670 should be ok for a little while longer depending on how well it performs with the DK2. Any ideas on what card would be best for VR in the $300 range? Or should I just SLI my 670?

SLI will add an extra frame of lag, so it'll feel odd and possibly make you feel nauseous. I've got a 670 as well, i think it'll mostly be fine. Might have to dial back to medium settings for any newer games that come out with rift support though.

Thanks for the info. Will standby for the email.

At most, we will at least be getting an update on when the DK2 ships in July, hopefully. Realistically, they will confirm that the DK2 is still on schedule to ship this month.

OMG! From reddit apparently

They seriously need to say something. Cyber stated by or on July 1st. I'm hoping Palmer and the Oculus team weren't just spewing hot air when they stated they were still on track for July.

It's only natural that we want an update since it is July after all.

From the horse's mouth:

cybereality said:
The first batch of official DK2s have left the manufacturing facility and are making their way to our distribution centers now. We expect to ship roughly 10,000 DK2s from the factory in July, with just over half of the units through distribution centers and on their way to doorsteps before the end of the month. The very first units are expected to reach developers the week of July 14th. Tracking numbers for all DK2s will be generated as soon as the shipment has been processed by a distribution center.

Please take a moment to confirm that your shipping address is up to date via the Oculus Sales page (https://www.oculusvr.com/sales/). We'll ship to the address on file, and if the information is incorrect, it may cause delivery delays. In the event that your payment information is no longer valid, you'll receive an email prior to shipment with instructions on how to complete your payment.

We're now over 45,000 DK2 pre-orders, which is incredibly exciting. That said, we're slightly behind in manufacturing and there's currently a high chance that some developers with estimated shipping in July may not have their DK2s shipped until August. We have a team in China working on continued ramp of production at our factory, and we'll work our way through the queue as fast as we can.

Once your Development Kit 2 is ready for shipment, you'll receive an email with a tracking number which can be used to see an estimated delivery date. Please do not contact Oculus support asking for a shipping estimate, as we do not know the status of your package until a tracking number has been generated.

We'll continue to post status updates, so everyone can stay current on what's going on behind the scenes. Thanks again for your continued support, and we hope everyone is excited to be begin working with DK2!

My order date
Date: Mar 21, 2014 05:52 PM PDT

Too bad I was abroad for work and didn't notice the pre-orders were up until I got home, I would have ordered it right away.

Hope 2 days isn't enough to miss the first batch.
