Oculus Rift DK2 Thread

Just tried Euro Truck Sim, anyone elese getting the colour bleed on the text on the sat nat??

Seems anything that is towards the bottom or far left or right of your field of view becomes blurry and/or has colour bleed over, is this to be expected?

Im halfway hoping they find a way to put eye tracking in it and get the FOV eye rending in so we can see completely insane performance boosts

Yeah really hoping to see some R&D from them in this area, I bet it's crazy expensive/difficult trying to work with eye tracking on top of designing an hmd and trying to integrate the two.

iFixit recently tore down the DK2, and they showed an image looking through the lens. From the picture, it looks like the "bleed" is coming from the lenses themselves.

The devs have said they will be fixing this issue from the software side though.

Are you saying this only happens in Euro Truck or in every demo?

So I just got done using the DK2 for about 3 hours. I never got nauseas at any point. Before I get into impressions let me just say that I'd hate to see the DK1.

My setup
-I wear glasses
-I have the screen as far back as it goes
-I never tried the DK1

I'll go in order of what a I played/tried to play

Tuscany (Oculus world demo)
I only spent a minute or 2 with this one. I definitely noticed the yellow/purple blur on edges right away. This one was very lucid dream-like for me. I used to be way into lucid dreaming and my time in this demo
definitely had a similar feeling of revelation that I was somewhere else, but not really. LDers probably know what I mean. Turning my head behind me for the first time was interesting.

Desk demo (Oculus room tiny)
Biggest take away from this was that it was disappointing/frustrating to not be able to interact (via physical motions) with anything on the desk

Cyberspace
This was the worst from a performance standpoint. just super juddery and low FPS. Given what it is and what my computer is equipped with, there is no reason for performance like that (assuming it's the games fault)
There was a second or 2 where I kinda had the sense of motion. As the ride got going there was a little bit where I kinda got legit nervous. I remember sitting back in my folding chair and holding on to the frame lol
better FOV and overall fidelity and this will likely be too much for many people

Radial-G
Haven't been able to get the game to display on the rift and have positional tracking

Room scene
This is basically just a virtual environment version of a screensaver.

Proton Pulse
This was the most like an actual game you could play. Also the best designed for VR. I can see myself playing that one some more. The difficulty ramp up is either very slow or nonexistant.
I didn't play for long, but what I played was pretty tame

Elite Dangerous
I don't have my saitek x52 pro HOTAS setup right now so I only used the keyboard. This one was pretty cool. The resolution of the screen really and overall technical make up of the rift really hurt it though.
I really wanted to be able to interact with more of the stuff in the cockpit. Let me reach out and pull that red handle! I turn my head towards the back and imagined it would be cool if like saw some bad guy sneaking up behind me
I don't really know how you could make that encounter work without either QTEs, switching to third person or going pure first person shooter. First person melee is probably going to be really hard on the rift.

Euro truck simulator 2
I had my G27 wheel/pedal/shifter setup for this one. The UI in this is really bad. As it stands now you won't be able to do much more than just drive around. I defintly got immersed in this one.
Again, better hardware (which is a given to happen) this will be legitimate.

You probably noticed that I haven't spoken a whole lot about general performance. That's because except for a few cases it never really was that noteworthy. The screen door thing is kind of a killer, perhaps more than the FOV
(I never tried the DK1 remember). There was judder in spots, there was blurring in spots, but the whole package is so rough that it's hard for any one thing to really stand out.

Right now my biggest take away from the whole thing is: Needs better hardware. Both on the rift's end and on our end. I don't think it will be enough to just get better FOV. Given the way I'm using the rift at the moment
perhaps I'd feel differently If I saw less frame border. It never really jumped out at me, but perhaps it was holding back a feeling of presence at the subconsious level.

Another take away is: VR can be the real deal. What we have now is close enough, and it's easy enough to pinpoint what needs to improve. Making the improvements might be tough/costly but they are too identifiable to not happen eventually

UI design is crucial for VR. It would be wise for any would be game devs/designers/artists to build up a portfolio of VR interfaces now, so that when the inevitable time comes, they will be first in line to get hired by the people making the content.
Learn enough now and you could be heading up those teams at the company. I really think there is a huge opportunity right for kids/students now to set themselves up really nice for 5,10 years from now.

Welp I'm kind of rambling now. Long story short, the DK2 is interesting, what I played was a great proof of concept for what is virtually a reality.

Ha, I kind of do this unintentionally. I found something that helped me a lot is 'leading' with my head. Like if I was going to turn left on the controller/KB/M I would start looking left. Also slow, deliberate movements.

It does take a little getting used to. I think Ocean Rift was my favorite for looking around quickly.

Yeah-ocean rift is perfect because the movement is slow and deliberate. I think the movement speed on the Tuscany demo to too fast and should be slowed down a notch.

Are you saying this only happens in Euro Truck or in every demo?

ETS is really the only demo/game i have tried that is kind of text heavy, but is probably the same for any game that has text i guess. Have to say with ETS the screen judder when looking around is down right terrible hopefully this can be fixed???

At least by the sound of it the bleed can be fixed via software?, but what about the out of focus of the image around the out edges of your fov??

I found a solution for all my juddering. It's the same solution I used for judder in the Bethesda games.

Download this:

http://exkode.com/home-en.html

And under the tab that looks like a processor, set the frame rate limit to '75' and make sure it's checked.

Load up Elite: Dangerous, then alt-tab out, and you'll see DXTory has made a profile for it automatically. Make sure it hasn't reverted your frame limit back to 60, and set it to 75 again.

ALL my juddering is gone and it's silky smooth now.

MASSIVE difference.

What you're referring to is chromatic aberration, a natural effect of lenses. The software creates the inverse of this so that it can be cancelled out by the lenses. At the moment it's not quite right, I believe this is being addressed. However, if it is only happening to you near the bottom of your view, you may be experiencing the same as me, where the headset is not sitting square-on to your eyes, which is exaggerating the aberration. I refer you to this post, and the solution, in this post. It may also help with the 'out of focus' you describe at the edge of the lenses.

I asked a question earlier how it shows everything sideways on my dk2.

I didn't get any response. You guys are only friends I have, I have given you my sweat and blood of eight years in neogaf and many more of lurking before member.

In return you ignore me.

Not like this GAF , not like this

LOL we want to see you suffer...

J/K the Rift's screen is a Samsung Galaxy Note screen, which refreshes differently than normal computer monitors. Because of this, windows detects it as a 9:16 1080x1920 screen instead of 16:9 1920x1080. This mean by default, mirroring your monitor to it will make it sideways on the RIft. In your resolution settings you need to play with the landscape vs portrait options until the desktop is right-side-up on the rift's screen.

I don't even have a DK2 but I still feel like I've let you down somehow.

Sorry bro.

Thanks my brethren

;p

I'm trying to get Euro Truck to work. I have the game running inside the rift but when I try to go to the options to tweak the game i see a double image (where I have to close one eye to navigate). Is there any way to adjust inside the rift? I'm trying to get rid of the stuttering.

Edit: Also having problems with Elite Dangerous. I'm getting it to run on the rift but the camera is not comming on (even though I have positional) and all the blacks are green and nasty looking. From all the impressions I'm getting it should look truly black.

Thanks ill give that a go

On another point, what need to be updated so the demos work work in direct mode??

Is there a way for the desktop to not look completely fucked up on the Rift? I rotated it to portrait, but it still looks janky as hell.

Some games like Radial G and Elite Dangerous require the Extended Display option to work correctly.

It's called chromatic aberration or dispersion and all lenses do it.

If I ever get round to getting a rift, first think I'll be doing is designing a better optics solution for it.

a better optics solution is great and would be appreciated, but it's not needed to fix chromatic aberration. That can, and will, be fixed in software.

You can't totally remove it in siftware as you will simply create chromatic aberration from the image that is being corrected. The resolution of the lenses will massively exceed that of a 1080p screen.

Out of interest, are the lenses they are using plastic?

Totally remove? No, but you can correct it to an acceptable degree. Right now, many of the available demos weren't built with chromatic aberration correction which is new to the latest SDK. So what you see is extra bad.

The lenses are glass, IIRC.

EDIT: Elite Dangerous appears to use a custom CA correction, not the one from the SDK, but it doesn't work well at all. I get CA all over the place.

I can't get Elite Dangerous to show up on my Rift

1) open your oculus rift config utility and set up your profile
2) go to view->display, set the rift to display as an extended mode
3) open your display control panel for windows, and rotate the new Oculus Rift display so it is in landmark orientation
4) use ctrl-alt-del to open your task manager
5) close wscript and ovrservices, in windows 8 wscript is under details, not processes
6) open Elite Dangerous, go to options, set 3D to "Oculus rift experimental"
7) in Elite Dangerous options, select secondary monitor as your display, the screen will now jump to your rift

enjoy! Note, wscript and ovrservice need to be closed every time you launch elite. close wscript first, it will restart ovrservice if it detects that it's closed.

QUICK WORD OF WARNING TO EVERYBODY: THE INCLUDED CLOTH GLASS CLEANER APPARENTLY SCRATCHES THE SHIT OUT OF YOUR LENSES. DO NOT USE THEM.

Someone recommended me a glass cleaning kit on amazon that I've ordered. Until it arrives, I refuse to clean my lenses.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to some fixes and updates.. It will be great. I have some judder problems as well, haven't figured out that one yet.

Just got mine setup and tried the built in demo in the config tool. Pretty crazy experience. However, I've noticed alot of blurriness when I move my head around. I had to turn on extend desktop to HMD however to get the led light to go from amber to blue. Plus I had to change my monitor tilt in display settings.

Anyway, I cant help but think something is not configured right. How blurry is it suppose to be when I do head tracking?

Perfect, got it up and running after this, thanks :D

Have absolutely no idea what to do in the game or where to go etc. but holy fuck is everything in that game massive. like leaving that main docking area is fucking surreal

Quoting to save for later

So does anyone else have a scratch on the lens yet? Took me all of 2 days to get a nice quarter inch left and above the right eye. Man, I thought I was being so careful but I saw another gaffer in the Elite Dangerous thread say stop using the lens cloth that came with the dk2. Too late for me, here's hoping I can order another set of A lenses!

Edit: Scratch that it was Krejlooc haha just getting my threads mixed up

Double edit: I can't tell if it affects the picture, it's pretty hard to tell with the minor lens reflection that's already there.

I've used the cloth without any issues.

If you absolutely must use the lens cloth, here's a couple of tips that may save you from scratching your lenses:

1) First thing you might want to do is use compressed air to get rid of any possible debris, bits and crumbs that could be sitting on the lenses. Rubbing those with the cloth will essentially drag them across the lens, causing scratches. You don't wanna do that. Blow them away first.

2) Gently fog the lenses with your breath. Don't overdo it. Just quickly and lightly. Then quickly, and VERY gently and lightly, drag the cloth over the lens. Don't apply any pressure whatsoever. Just move the cloth around in a circular pattern and let it soak up the grease and grime like a sponge. Again, don't apply pressure as you don't want to risk cracking or scratching the lens.

Hope that helps. It works well for me anyways.

If this lens scratching shit is as easy to do as it sounds, it's fucking stupid and they need to send out free replacements. Dev kit or not, if your product fucks up by cleaning it properly, that's on you.

Tried a DK2 today, my first VR experience. Loved it. Tried Tuscany, a kitchen demo, OceanRift, Cyber Space and Proton Pulse. Fortunately I didn't get nauseous, and everything ran smooth for the most part. Tuscany was a decent starting point; no mind blowing visuals but it had a nice sense of place. OceanRift was a step up from that; I could have spent a good hour just looking at the life underwater. Cyber Space was awesome. Looking down from the top was genuinely unnerving.

Proton Pulse was really fun. The sense of depth was great, it was the only thing I played that was an actual game and as simple as it was, the perspective is novelty enough to make it really fun. And at one point I stood up and turned 180 and seeing small, confined room I'd been in for 10 minutes melt away into a view of space was fantastic; perhaps because I wasn't expecting that to be behind me.

Perhaps even more fun was seeing the reaction of one of my friends. He's easily scared and jumps at anything. To put it in perspective he gasped in fright when he clipped through the chair in the config desk demo. So putting him on Cyber Space was particularly fun.

be sure to go real deep. It's super relaxing down there IIRC.

You don't have a bad heart, do you?

I already did that, don't have to worry about that.

I am really hoping that Outlast gets the Rift treatment, I thought it did and was holding out for it, only to find out it doesn't. :/

You can also use the Oculus Service Manager by Bilago. It makes this whole process one button click

Played ocean rift. Very nice sense of scale. I pulled a NOPE as I start exploring the depths. I also played technolust. This was really the first/game demo to ever make me feel kinda woozy. Running forward while you are looking up is a weird and unpleasent sensation. I wouldn't say nausesus but definitely disoriented with tinges of lightheadedness

Finally got my Thrustmaster in today and got Elite Dangerous up and running. Fuck me,this shit is legit. I saw Guardians of the Galaxy today and kept saying "I am Star Lord" whilst flying through the galaxy, incredible.

Anyone get DCS World working? I load it up in any settings and it has "Auto Detect Oculus Rift" enabled but it never goes into Rift Mode

Odd. That game was easy as pie to get running. Actually thinking of buying for the F15C or the other DLC not sure yet.

Anyway, for that, I just leave the Oculus in secondary extended.

I have Rift auto detect checked and when I click on any of the instant action scenarios it automatically loads on the Rift.

Have you been using Bilago's tool?
