Oculus Rift DK2 Thread

Wow, finally had some time to try out Assetto Corsa with the DK2 tonight. It is really great. I wouldn't have any hesitation recommending it to everyone, whether you like driving games or not, as a VR experience. Just sitting in the car in the pit at Spa was a wow moment. Ran great on my 670 as well.

I've got judder when i move my head but maybe it's my 650 ti boost idk. Monday i received my replaced 770 hope it'll work well.

3' is fine really, it can be pointed way down. In the desk demo you can turn on the grid to see where you'll be. I forgot I had a bunch of camera equipment from my macro addiction and found an arm and such. Kind of depends on what you're running. For example Assetto Corsa will 'recenter' but it stays straight. Like you have to have your camera pointed at you directly. In Elite Dangerous I can hit recenter and it just points 'straight' wherever your head is pointing. So the camera can be off to the left and I'll be straight in my chair.

As for glasses, I have prescription glasses but with the A lenses I don't wear them. I think I'm -1.5/-1.25. But glasses will fit, it's just annoying as shit (at least I found them to be) because you WILL be constantly taking the thing off and on until you start 'knowing' how stuff will launch and setup.

And just use a small desk fan. My upstairs TV room is a bit 'stuffy' without the AC since it's closing on winter so it's a little worse in the summer with the fogging but a desk fan would be perfect. Don't mount something on the Rift, I thought about it, but it's already awkward and it wouldn't help as much as something blowing on your face to dry the minor sweat on everything. Plus, convertible racing! EXTRA IMMERSION!

Seriously, I know you're a huge race fan and you're in for a damned treat. Just take it slow and don't jump straight into flying, racing, rollercoaster shit or you may get a bit nauseous and your body will associate the Rift with it and you'll have to acclimate. Start off with the Chair, Spirited Away, Titans of Space and just give yourself time. I wish I did ... I'm back to being able to enjoy it but I jumped straight in and it's like getting drunk on Tequila ... you can do it again, but it won't be the next day.

Again, thanks a million for your responses. The last paragraph is the kind of advice I need :) I can all but guarantee I would have been trying to tough out 20 laps of the Nurburgring 10 minutes after it came out of the box!

Hey guys, what was the demo that someone made a thread about saying it was unbeleivable? It was the one when you I'm a small boat and there's like a babies face, and a god or something.....

Yeah, that would be Senza Peso. Pretty incredible experience, but not completely free of the judder issue. I'd also stay away from watching YouTube videos of it. While it's a totally different experience in VR than it is on YT, it does kind of spoil what you're going to see, and I imagine it would be more impressive if you went in blind (I didn't, and I wish I had).

Found it!! Working great! No judder whatsoever with this config.

Main thing is keep AA off and the PP settings/resolution & refresh rate as i've done them i think most other settings can be messed with to suit your system but this should work on anything .

Well I think I've had my first real case of VR sickness now. I was trying out Assetto Corsa and was experiencing some frame rate problems so I stopped my car and started just looking out at the trees in the background. Things started to get a bit slideshowy and suddenly my face started to feel a bit clammy and I could feel my gut get nauseous. Had to stop there and lie down for a bit.

I'm not sure if it was just my frame rate issues or not but for some reason Assetto Corsa in the DK2 just didn't have the impact LFS did for me. I've also noticed that for some reason I'm starting to find the limitations of the DK2 (resolution, screen door, etc.) more noticeable now.

To be expected really. LFS is old, can maintain 75fps on pretty low specs. AC is a lot more demanding and if you were noticing it getting 'slideshowy' then I guess you were sub-75fps for a while. I'm noticing that AC starts to drop in performance after a few laps. Not sure if it's a bug or my system throttling from overheating...

Anyone else find it difficult to hook up Oculus on the Nvidia SLI boards?

I got a GTX690 and I was able to get the drivers to see the extra video device, but I had to select "Display All devices" (in the Control Panel) in order for the Oculus software to sense the Rift. Then the problem is that the device default to landscape, but that is a vertical screen, so I had to go to the main OS Screen Resolution screen and change the device to Portrait (to flip it) so it can be a horizontal screen. After that, I was able to run the Oculus demo fine. However, trying to run Alien Isolation, it will kick the stereo output to whatever is the main monitor -- which meant my TV. So I had to basically make the Oculus the main monitor device and turn it off to see the desktop. Turn it on to play the game. Alien will not display to another device that is not the main monitor for some reason (but the oculus demo will).

Needless to say, it is a pain in the ass getting setup. No instructions either for Nvidia users.

For the life of me, I don't know how to setup Extended Mode. Whenever I select the Rift as the main, my desktop home screen is all gone to the DK2 display, everything looks warped there, my monitor is just empty with nothing to select or launch. Is there a good tutorial/video explaining it somewhere, preferably on Assetto Corsa?

You have described one of several normal DK2 setups. :) You will find there are many quirks to running DK2 demos - there is very little consistency.

Shift+Win+arrow key. This allows you to move any active window between displays. When you set the Rift as Primary, windows you have open on your monitor may move over, so this the easiest way to get them back.

In AC, I believe you can hit F11 to make the launcher windowed. Or you can do it in the launcher.ini. My launcher always starts up on my monitor if I do this, making it easy to pick cars/tracks. The sim will launch on the headset.

Remember to have a look at this:

Or if you live in the US, this:

Oculus VR might not be incompetent when it comes to making hardware, but when it comes to shipping stuff and releasing information regarding it, they are at the same level as a bunch of 13 year-old kids sending stuff to people online for their first time. No specific order, no info at all, they keep skipping people like crazy, if there's some issue with your credit card they won't notify and just leave you waiting, etc...

On the boards there is now this guy that ordered in May and he's still waiting. Some people living in the same are as others that ordered days or weeks earlier still waiting, etc...

So yeah, make sure your credit card stuff is all correct at all times and then pay attention to what area they are sending and if they skip you, notify the mod over there and hope he doesn't ignore your post.

Thanks for all the information Mik2121, appreciate it!

You can do as Betta Lines says.
Me i set rift to primary and power it off, set up all i need to and switch it on from here.

I haven't changed anything, just started the game and played. Everything has been really smooth for me.

I'm going to give Assetta another go as I'm hoping they fixed the no 3D thing by now.

Trackmania 2 I have a quick spin. I'm not sure if there is an in car view (or if I'd want to use it) but you'll definitely want to turn off motion blur if you try it in VR. Other than that it worked great, and I love that there's a keyboard shortcut to switch it from your monitor, to rift mode on the rift mode. It's similar to how HL2 does it. Nice and neat.

The Rift works with Trackmania 2? Interesting.....

Also, if you guys had to take an educated guess based on your research, when do you honestly think the CV 1 will be released? Do still see it being released at all in 2015? If so, what month?

October 2015

EDIT: Not based on any 'research', just what I figure is a plausible date knowing what we know. q

Did you check the resolution is 1920x1080@74? I have the restart the launcher for it to show up. Helpful to make the launcher windowed so you can keep it on your monitor (while the sim launches on the headset).

Finally!

I've exactly done this, I was able to move AC window to the DK2 with shift+win+right arrow key, however the image is warped there and there's no head tracking. I disabled AA, post processing, set it to Rift renderer mode, set Rift as main display etc.

Why does this happen?

You shouldn't have to move anything to the headset - if it's primary and detected, the sim will launch on the headset. If you're having to move stuff over, it's already not working. The shift+win+arrow is just useful for moving other windows that have annoyingly appeared on the headset (when you set it primary) back to your monitor, rather than the other way around. Are you sure the resolution is correct?

Hey, what's the deal with 74Hz anyways? Does anyone know why they pulled up one shy?

Btw, are you going to be doing a video?

It's the same with my 60Hz monitor - the options are all 59Hz. I think it's because the timing is actually a few thousandths of an ms less, about 59.94 for the monitor and 74.99 for the DK2... and AC just doesn't round the figures up.

I can test this by having v-sync off, monitor receiving AC's '59Hz' with the frame limiter at 59fps - there's a slight stutter. 60fps limiter - smooth. So I think it's closer to 60 than 59.

I'm struggling to make a video - being unable to access the replay controls means that I can't easily capture it in my usual way - doing the camera thing. The only thing I can do is Ctrl+R, which gives a very short instant replay and I can quickly try to record it but... it's not ideal! The dilemma is... I could make a video, working around the problem, and then by the time it's done, Kunos could have done a cheeky update that enables replay controls and I'll want to make the video all over again!

Ah yes, I forgot as well that the AC's monitor reports were not rounded either.

Video; Gotcha. Makes total sense. Best to wait for 1.0 final and hopefully do it proper.... if you can find the time in between making iRacing videos :)

Assetta Corsa works fantastically now, I'm happy to report, not that you hadn't already heard that. I just left the graphics settings at the defaults and my GTX 980 handled it without issue, which you'd hope it would, obviously, but 75 hasn't been a given on everything. I'm so happy to have hotlaps in the Lotus on Monza back. That car wants to kill you. I love it.

I wish there was a release date announced for Elite. I know when my rift arrives (probably in the next two weeks) I'm going to want to join the beta, but if the current "2014" date is accurate I could end up spending £50 just to play it a week or two early. I might just pre-order it (£35) now to save myself the temptation, and then knowing my luck it'll get delayed and I'll wish I was in the beta.

This is what happens: I set it to Extended mode, my desktop gets moved to DK2, I bring the windows back to the monitor, I launch AC, start a race, the monitor goes black and the race will start on the DK2. I put it on, both eyes see only part of the image(like how the desktop looks in extended mode) and there's no head tracking.

The settings in AC look correct, Rift in render mode at 75hz.

It's an interesting situation! By your wording I'd guess you already know about the event on the 22nd of november. The question is if they'll announce an inminent release or announce a "delay" into a specific date in early 2015. Or I guess they could announce no release date at all, but that would be a bit disappointing.

One thing you may want to consider is that there will be at least one character wipe before gamma starts, but no wipe between gamma and release... Meaning that even if you preorder as you said "to play one or two weeks early", you'd at least be playing the full thing, not just a beta.

Just tried to update my Rift's fw to 2.12 and it got a "error reading firmware block 0" error midway through. It's blinking orange light and the OculusConfigUtil now won't detect the DK2. I've restarted the fw update process and it finished installing the fw but when I restart the ConfigUtil it still says No Device Attached. Holding the power button still gives the flashing orange light. Also re-installed the runtime again and tried it on other USB ports. Anyone have any idea what went wrong?

You're not the only one:

https://developer.oculusvr.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=13936

It seems like you went through this process no?:

Your device will not be recognized anymore by the Config Util and it won't function. It will look "bricked" except maybe for a flashy orange light. Don't panic. Just reopen the Config Util and go back to the Update Firmware menu item and select the update again. When it doesn't find an active device, it will instead look for a device that is already in "firmware update mode". When it finds it it will restart the update process again and once finished, all will be well.

Well my Oculus order (September 8th, UK) just went to ready, so fuck it I'm buying the beta haha. Even if it releases imminently after the 22nd of November, I'll still get pretty much a month of early access.

Are there any good solar system exploring games out that support the OR? I'd love to see how it would be in outer space with huge planets to look at.

Titans of Space would be my recommendation too, particularly if you are new to VR, as it's more like an educational ride rather than a free-form exploration demo. (I'm not sure whether to recommend it as your very first VR demo either though... my friend got pretty freaked out, partly from vertigo, partly the blackness of space).

But if you want to explore, there is another very good demo called Solar System Explorer where you pilot your own ship around. This demo freaks me out a lot more than Titans. I feel very uneasy. You can pick a ship that gives you a co-pilot to sit next to... but it's little comfort... space is a cold, scary place.

Yeah, I've read that's cool too. It's got a new name now though, Discovering Space.

I want this.

I'll check out Titans of Space too.

If flying around space is what you're after, I have to imagine everything pales in comparison to Elite Dangerous.

Guys... It's finally happening!!!!

Just got the e-mail right now letting me know that rest of the money has been charged on my CC. Ordered on September 3. I hope they ship it out by the end of this week. How long did it normally take any fellow US GAFers to receive their order from this point? Also, what courier do they use UPS or FEDEX?

Yusss indeed!

Status:PROCESSING:Your order has been checked out for shipping and will be shipped in the next batch. We'll send you a notification once it's shipped. This typically takes 2-4 business days.

Finally, this thread title won't be taunting me :P Got to admit, not the best time to eat that charge but can't wait to get it working!

Also, if you guys had to take an educated guess based on your research, when do you honestly think the CV 1 will be released? Do still see it being released at all in 2015? If so, what month?

Summer of next year. I imagine they are lining up (or already lined up) manufacturing at this point. Possibly later like Sean said but I would think they'd launch a little earlier, maybe a summer tour showing it off in malls, stores, etc ... with demo kiosks, vans, and such.

My biggest worry is software. I know actual game development is going on, but we haven't seen much or have a list or anything, and it's less than a year to 'launch' I would think.

It's tough to say. I don't think they can afford to launch outside of 2015 though, that would mean another DK(3) release or at least a limited (to developers) release. Nobody knows, Oculus is pretty tight lipped about everything related to release and updates. Otherwise they are pretty transparent.

If flying around space is what you're after, I have to imagine everything pales in comparison to Elite Dangerous.

Ha, yeah. As a demo it's pretty amazing though, you really feel the scale. I find with the enclosed cockpit I don't feel the "scale" of the planets and asteroids as much in E:D. It's weird, but I imagine once I get a ship with a bigger viewpoint/window it will be different. Although the space stations are awesome, the "docking" tutorial is what I usually let people try.
