Oculus Rift DK2 Thread

finally got my shipping notice. is there a site that details the recommend first steps? i apologize as i know this information has been covered in this very thread, but i was hoping it had been compiled somewhere.

There's really not much to it. The quick start guide that comes with the rift got you covered for the hardware setup.
If you haven't already, sign up for the oculus dev section to download and install the runtime.
Once your rift is connected, run the configuration utility and update the firmware. Then you can jump right into the desk demo scene which should be enough to amaze you regardless of detailed settings :D I for one also checked out Tuscany before anything else to see if I would get motion sick by moving around ^^
Afterwards you can measure your IPD, figure out which screen distance feels best for you (don't forget to update the eye relief in the config utility accordingly), set the display mode to extended so that non-Oculus demos work... You will figure out most things by messing around :)

oh, rad, Half-Life Source is also supported! I like that game a lot more. Unfortunately everything seems to work but -freq 75.

hey thanks man, really appreciate it.

Aww man why do I have to be away from home when Titans of Space and HL2 get updated :( I couldn't get HL2 to work last night but I was evidently going about it the completly wrong way.

I also had another go on Radial G last night. Just had a sit in the cockpit at first, taking a good look around. The head tracking is great here. Leaning closer to the side of the cockpit to look down at your ship is so cool. There's a great sense of scale in the level and no matter how fast you go you don't feel sick at all. Pretty amazing demo all round. Will be buying the full game for sure.

I got mine yesterday after a first day 5pm preorder from Sweden. "Installing" the thing was easy, except some issues with fully detecting the camera, which were solved by using the powered usb hub in my desktop display to power the camera (weird bug, but others seem to have the same issue).

Sitting down with the camera on top of my desktop display, the positional tracking worked perfectly in Elite: Dangerous. People really have to try out sitting in that cockpit and exploring the interactive hud that reacts to the direction of your gaze. I did't get very deep into the game mechanics, but traversing with the spacecraft and going past asteroids in dangerously high speeds felt awesome (remember to turn your head and follow the relative movement of an asteroid).

I bought some soft contact lenses to use with the dk2 earlier this summer, and I have to say, the sense of immersion into the virtual reality game worlds is much greater without glasses (which I had to use with the dk1, including adjusting the oculus lenses farther from my eyes). Seems like I have to buy more soft contact lenses ...

Nice! ToS was one of my favorite demos for the DK1, and for that reason I checked titansofspace.net for an update just last night, but found nothing. Good to see it this morning.

Anyway, this is great. I just tried it and it's not just ported over to the DK2, but has some nice improvements (well, at least from when I last I tried it there's better textures, demos, paths and information..). And works perfect in Direct mode. So this is so well done that I just donated some money to Drash (developer), can't wait to see more from the guy.

This may be a stupid question, but I've never really played too many flight sim games, let alone space ones, and I only have a 360 controller, but is Elite : Dangerous worth the $75? Everyone says it's the coolest DK2 experience, and a lot of fun, but 75 clams is a lot...

I am not a fan of space sim games at all and I played with mouse and keyboard, but I would say the experience is so mindblowing that $75 doesn't feel like a lot. On the other hand, I buy a lot of crap on Steam that I never end up playing (but still feeling good for buying it ...), so you probably shouldn't listen to me ...

HOLY SHIT. HL2 is amazing. Started a new game and played it for half an hour (standing up), jaw on the floor the whole time.

My HL2 is modded. Do I have to reinstall it and delete everything?

Btw Sightline The Chair is sooooo amazing! This was the best ecperience so far :O

I'm so glad to see another batch of people get on the HL2 VR train. It really is an amazing experience. The DK2 upgrade is sizable, but it was already a fantastic VR game.

HL source too? Sweet.

I hope someone, somewhere, is working on a Doom 3 BFG edition mod for the DK2, as Doom 3 was if anything a better VR game on the DK1.

My god. HL2 is blowing my mind and I'll keep playing it like that (Standing up! For the first in my life, I actually think standing up to play a game is worth it :P), but oh how much I wish the rift had a higher resolution screen. Some of the details in the distance are totally ruined by the resolution. :(

I never tried the DK1, so I thought 1080p would be enough, but it's clearly not. How is Sony going to handle this? I kinda feel bad for them, maybe they should just save Morpheus for the PS5.

They'll handle it by making games specifically for the Morpheus's resolution. They'll be fine.

Are you using SGSSAA or downsampling to improve the image quality?

I can't get HL2 working. The 3d mode selector is greyed out. Grr.

Does it still have that terrible IPD setting which makes you want to puke after 2 minutes like it did with the DK1?

Imagine how it was on DK1 :P

Was still great though.
SGSSAA really helped clean it up, I guess it does still on DK2. I suggest 4xSGSSAA if you can handle it.

That's why I don't go to Ravenholm ... in VR.

You totally should though man. You totally should.

My 'moment' was in Episode 1. The bit in the dark where you come up the stairs to an area infested with poison head crabs, right before the first ant lion hole. I thought I had killed them all. Then one leapt at my face from out of the blackness. It was terrifying AND amazing.

I couldn't even last 2 minutes in HL2 with the DK1.. I just tried "the DK2 version" for an hour and I feel pretty good :)

Edit: My head actually feels a little "heavy", but nothing like with the DK1.

I'm not a developer but I really can't wait till next year for retail release :(
anyone think I should get DK2?

I do care about resolution though
any news about retail unit spec?

At this point, there's not a lot that uses the Rift. By the time the consumer model comes out, there will be a lot more support, and it won't have all these little problems, and hoops you sometimes need to jump through to set up. Also Elite will be out by then, and not cost 75 damned dollars.

Two weeks ago, I'd have said no, but it's getting there. I mean, we have a small number of proper games that work with DK2 now, and launching the games is a lot easier since the 4.1 runtime came out.

In a few more weeks, when more of the DK1 supporting full games update, it's going to be much less of a gamble buying a DK2.

Road to VR did a write-up and consolidated all the HL2 fixes and such here

Will need to try a couple things on the troubleshooting as I still get jutter.

I've also read that unplugging/plugging back in the Rift and Camera can work for various 'jutter' issues in other demos.

Thank you.

Everything worked but I can't select the maximum resolution for the DK2, and once in-game it just shows the add.

Needless to say that it's a blurry mess, this way.

How would you apply this in game?

Also, I noticed something odd with FPS games. I seem to do better with a mouse than controller. The quick movements of the mouse don't disorient me as much.

I got half life to work. No more judder.
The main thing that I did wrong last time is not getting steam VR ready. After I got steam VR ready, it is easy to start the game in VR mode. Also to stop the judder the dk2 has to be the main monitor. I updated the runtime to the newest version too. Don't know if that fixes anything.
How do I reset the VR camera height? I am 2 meters tall in the game. Everyone is so short.

Found it.

So, turns out that 30-45 minutes of HL2 gives me nausea! I've never felt like this playing anything before. And here I thought I was immune to this kind of stuff. :P

Hmm, when i loaded the SteamVR program and the Oculus Config utility window pops up but says 'No Device attached', yet the Oculus Config Utility thats is in my taskbar is detecting the OR. How to i get steam to see my OR?

You don't open it like that. Forget about the SteamVR app. Gp to the 'View' tab and in the drop down menu there's an option, I think it's called Steam VR Mode. You launch it from there.

Ah thanks.

Have looked and there only appears to be small mode and big picture mode. No mention of SteamVR or the like....any ideas?

Is your Oculus on?
Can you check whether it is connected on the Oculus configuration?
If it is connected, you should restart steam and the Vr option should be there.

Is your Rift already connected in extended mode? Do you use a custom skin (try the default one if that's the case)?

Restart Steam and make sure your DK2 is on. That worked for me.

Still can't get HL2 to work. No 1920x1080 option and when I launch the game I can only see the hud. Black screen and no tracking at all.

Ah, i had to also enable the beta for the SteamVR app, now the SteamVR (beta) appears in view tab in Steam.

Have enabled the SteamVR (Beta), the OR is in Extended mode and enabled the VR in HL2, but when i load HL2 im not seeing it on the OR. What else needs to be done?

Having never experienced Titans of Space... that was simply an incredible experience.

Also, something I realized today... I have no idea what people are talking about with their FOV issues. I just got my Rift on Tuesday, so I don't know if something was updated since the first batch, but I can't see the edge of the screen in anything I'm playing. This is with B lenses with it cranked as close as possible. I also haven't seen any black smudging, but I haven't been particularly looking for it either.

I give up on HL2.

Titans of Space, however, is amazing. Works immediately in direct mode without a fuss. No blur. No judder. Great framerate. I wish more demos could be this easy to get up and running without issues.
