Oculus Rift DK2 Thread

Thx it's now recognized but of course doesn't work in direct mode nor in extended one (i tried estranged). If i need to put the rift in primary display to use it, fuck them. It shouldn't be a mess like that to use soft that are meant to be upgraded to the dk2.. This is just too much of a mess.

It works fine for me in Extended Mode. Eventually make sure to connect the rift before you start Steam.

Yeah. Didn't care for the game before, but now... woah. Feels like it was meant for the Rift, even though it was made before.
Yup, I didn't play it much before ( thought I bought it because I knew of oculus support for when I would get my DK2 ), but it's really another world with the DK2.
I probably did one of the first level where you are very close to a mountain, at least 10 times juste because of how impresive it was with the rift.

I hope we will get some 360° strereoscopic video of people doing crazy stuff in wing suits etc.. in the future.

Seems like I didn't put the camera in a good position, I can get close now, but not too close, there seems to be an invisible wall.
If you turn on 'camera bounds' in the desk demo, it should show you the limits of where you can move. If the tracking is failing within this cone, something must be blocking the camera's view. You should be able to move forward until the tip of the red line in the middle. If you still feel restricted when leaning forward, you're gonna have to put your camera further back, or reset your virtual position to that you have a closer starting point before leaning in.

But how do you do to use it in extended mode ?

The only apps i could use like that, i put the window on the secondary screen, then i alt+enter and sometimes it's fullsceeen only on the secondary so i can use it with the rift. IN that case Alt+Enter doesn't work and i only see something distorded and weird on the rift

All I do after connecting the Rift is selecting View -> SteamVR Beta in Steam and it opens up perfectly fine on the Rift. :/

AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! for the Awesome now supports DK2

Do you still need to look down the entire time while playing?

It was a bit of fun until I got really sick of holding my head looking straight down for 10 minutes and my neck started hurting.

Maybe I misunderstood you, but I was talking about the CV2 :)

It would be a genuine miracle if CV1 was 4K.. I wouldn't mind though.. Could run it at lower resolution if needed (and it would..)

Hah no, I misunderstood you! Thought you were talking about cv1.

So I think I'm leaning towards the X55 HOTAS setup. Not in any hurry but is there anything on the horizon? I looked at CH stuff but I guess you need pedals for certain actions that the 'twist' in the X55 takes care of. I don't really want to use pedals.

Anybody with the X55 have any praises/complaints?

Do you use a custom skin? Are you in the Steam client beta?
Use the default skin and update to the Beta if not. Otherwise... no idea, sorry :(

Nocustom skin, the client beta ? Something general or the one i changed for the steamVR thing ?

You are not alone. This option disapeared 2 days ago in my Steam. No idea why, it was working last week.

I guess i should just wait then..

I would hope most games have a recenter button that would let you look ahead instead (F12 is common?) but I could be wrong.

Speaking of wingsuit stuff, the latest UE4 update apparently has a hang glider mountain demo that looks PERFECT for the DK2. I would be almost shocked if no one has set it up for that yet. Of course UE4 may still be missing the latest SDK, and I don't know if it supports low persistence / direct mode / 75 Hz stuff.

The beta version of the steam client that you can opt in for in the steam settings.

Somebody at the oculus forum did compile most/all UE4 demos for theDK2. I think I've posted the link a few pages back. You won't have an easy time hitting 75fps on higher settings tho. Probably impossible to hit 75fps maxed out @ 1080p stereo for current hardware. It was a great experience on low anyway :D

Yeah I've done that and went back to testing, but I had moved the camera after I turned it off the first time and now I have a hard time getting the optimal position for the camera again. I'm about 1m away from the monitor, camera height is about 20cm higher than the Rift, it's looking at me rather than horizontally, both options didn't help. I'd hate to configure this everytime. :(

Someone on reddit getting their April 9th order shipped...
I ordered on March 24th and still nothing, guess Australia is getting fucked over again.

OK, we finally seem to be authorized to share comments/screenshots/videos of the PCARS Oculus Rift stuff. :)

I haven't tried it much so far since a lot of improvements are still being made. I'm seeing good comments about the latest build (as far as I'm aware it's still extended mode like most games). If you're in PCARS and going to try it though, make sure you read around in the thread since there may still be some specific command-line options you want to use.

The first batch of X55 has had plenty of reliability problems with people saying it's Saitek continuing their way of using the consumer as the QA department and fixing issues as they arise. There's a new batch coming in early September and I'd wait to see if they have fixed anything.

What's your processor? Hmm. I wonder if it's related to the judge I'm experiencing on komisi forest demo.
It's an old i7 870, stock. I imagine your 2500K is faster in most gaming situations.

I've taped mine to the wall behind my desk, so if sit comfortably it's about 4 feet away. It's about a foot above the headset height (so that it clears my monitor), angled down a little. From this position, I can lean to pretty extreme angles (more than I'd ever want to do from a seated position) with no loss of tracking. The only time it clips out of view is if I bend forward and really low, so I'm ducking behind my monitor. If I remember to push my monitor right back against the wall, this is even less of a problem, and then I have to literally get under the desk to break the tracking.

There's nothing to configure, the camera is something you should only have to position once and then forget. It only has to be roughly pointed in the right direction - you don't have to be precisely in the centre of the camera view for your starting position to be centred. Most demos generate their own starting position so if you start by sitting way off the to the left or right of the camera bounds, that will be your centre. There is almost always a 'recentre' button too.

Yeah. They're well into April orders for most territories at this point. Australian and New Zealand orders are experiencing significant delays.

This happened to me as well. I checked the SteamVR tool in my library and it turns out it had reset the beta opt-in status. Just reenter the beta, let it download the update, and check again.

For extended mode to work correctly, you need to set the Rift as the primary display. I know it's annoying when applications start on the desktop in the rift, but it only takes a few seconds to close one eye and drag it over to your monitor. Yes, it's messy, but you were also warned that this is not a consumer product and were advised not to buy it unless you planned to make games for it. If you can't deal with a few extra clicks to get games working, you should have waited.

I've owned the x55 for about a month, using it mostly with Star Citizen. I really like it, but it is my first HOTAS so I'm not really comparing it to anything. The soft-touch plastic is extremely nice and gives it a premium feel. I haven't had any of the build quality problems that others have reported (like "notching" of the twist). The throttle, in particular, looks and feels like a sweet piece of military hardware.

I'm not aware of any other new HOTAS products on the horizon - this market segment is tiny and moves very slowly.

Ah, I just assumed it contained some pics, videos or information about the implementation, LOL
Sorry, I have a bad habit of linking PCARS forum posts for the reference of members since we have a bunch of them here. Yes, it was just the confirmation that we are okay to post stuff about the DK2 now.

Ugh, just got a FedEx clearance delay shipping into Canada... Does that mean I'm going to get hit by duty? Have other Canadians been nailed?

Yeah i got that already but hey.. many apps, including really small ones had this direct to rift thing done. It's a little easy to invoke the "it's a dev product, don't be critical" argument. I guess if so many demos have it, it must be included in the tools somewhere and not a 2 weeks job to make it work..

I dunno, I have my Rift as secondary display and it works just fine for me using DirectToRift.exes. Virtual Desktop may help for primary display settings?

You don't need extended mode nor anything special if you have direct to rift exes.. which lots of dk2 demos don't have, not steam games obviously..

Cool, thanks for the replies!

I'll probably hold off on the X55 then. I'm in no hurry as I am unsure if $75 for E:D is in my budget with all the other shit I find myself buying once I got the Rift ... and for updating my PC prior.

But, I know a Fanatec wheel with CS Pedals and a chair/stand made me LOVE racing sims, so I'm thinking a kickass HOTAS setup will do the same for this resurgence of space sims that will be coming down the pipe.

Well, the Direct to Rift exes only work fine for me in extended mode unless the developer explicitly stated that (s)he included Direct HMD Access-support.

Does HL2 VR use the camera? I noticed that moving forward and backwards wasn't doing anything in the Rift, and realized that was responsible for a lot of the motion sickness I feel when looking up or down.

Try this in an autoexec.cfg file:
vr_translation_limit 100

The capture area seems fairly low and I found it alleviates some issues.

I can't get Half Life 2 VR to work. I hit the Activate VR Mode on the menu but nothing comes up on the rift. Do I also need to download the SteamVR beta?

I wish the new RollerCoaster Tycoon World would support the Oculus Rift. Imagine, you would play the game "traditionally" on your monitor but when you hop on a roller coaster in first person view, you would have the option to put on your Rift to experience your own ride in VR.

I think such amusement park managers are the perfect games for VR.

Will be a wonderful document in some years when the movie about how Oculus changed the world and his creators became crazy and killed each other will be written by Aaron Sorkin.
