Oculus Rift DK2 Thread

The last option is the only answer. Devs are going to just have to suck it up and make VR games that can run at 4K and 90fps. And players are just going to have to suck it up and tone down whatever settings they need to for it to run optimally as well. The sacrifice will be worth it though. Does that damage the future potential of VR ports? Probably. But it's necessary, and ports aren't going to be the real bread and butter of VR anyway. They need at least 90fps/1440p for CV1 and I'm willing to bet CV2 at the very latest will be 4K.

Amazing life-like Crysis like graphics aren't necessary to blow people's minds in VR. I've shown to my friends both Project Cars and Live For Speed and the outright "blowing of minds" aspect between the two is no different.

I don't now. For me, some of the most impressive things have been the UE4 demos.

And for others, it's been Titans of Space.. I think VR will offer a bevy of experiences with varying graphical fidelity that'll blow minds regardless.

I'm just stating that state of the art graphics aren't necessary to blow people's minds in VR. I'm really hoping Sony actually understands this aspect and if anything I hope for Project Morpheus they can even push the refresh rate to 75.

Low-persistence makes such a huge difference.

Just played HL2 VR for about an hour and it's amazing!

Decoupled aiming feels great and so much more natural than traditional fps games. The sense of scale and presence is great too. Those manhacks flying at your face look really cool. Would really love to play Skyrim like this.

I do feel a little sick though. :/

Coming from the DK1 where everything made me sick, the only 2 things in DK2 I still can't handle are Quake 2 and HL2. I'm seeing that with almost everyone who had tried the DK2 with me as well.

There needs to be a new way to think about controlling these types of fast movement fps games in VR

? I thought I saw a post in the WMD forums today saying that it's after Gamescom already. Guess, I'll take it down just in case. Darn..

Oh, I have no idea about that. I just know previously that people were avoiding posting about it due to NDA restrictions. I've edited out the image in my quote just in case.

Just received mine.

I think something's wrong, everything is blurry and with aberration everywhere !

I can barely read labels in Elite !

Did you configure it before using trying Elite? Do you have issues with other games?

Im inclined to believe thats related to eye settings in the oculus config tool.

I ran HL2 and the game was really blurry, i almost couldnt read anything.

In ED, the labels in the HUD are blurry and the chromatic aberration is HYPER present at the screen edges, to the point that i can see the colors separated.

Also, ED is ultra heavy now. I can run it just fine in my monitor (everything at maximum, plus FXAA), but with the DK2 the game crawls, barely hitting 40 fps (Vsyng on or off !)

In regards to ED performance. I think even the highest range PCs are having trouble with judder and FPS. Hoping a patch to the latest SDK goes a long way.

Just played 4 maps of Quake2VR and is much, much better than the ED implementation.

Hopefully next patch will solve some problems.

Something that I observed.
I get sick in half life playing with a controller. Turning around is especially bad.

Somehow, I don't get as sick playing with keyboard and mouse. Turning with the mouse is loads better compared to turning with the controller.

I feel the same and I think it's the general consensus. Probably increasing sensitivity of the analog sticks would help? I never tried.

Yeah, I've posted about it before. I think the slow, continuous turning of the controller messes with your brain much more htan the quick flick of the mouse.

Has DK2 been set up with Arma 3 yet? It seems perefect for the series given the independant head movement.
Nop, we need for DK2 compatibility on software like VorpX for that. ( should be """""soon""""" from what they say )

While I'm also waiting for it I really don't know how a stable 75 fps is even an option in Arma 3, a guess lowering the rendering distance will be one of the first thing to do, with the DK2 resolution it won't matter anyway.

For what people were saying able 4K for CV2 and how much power you will need for that, let's not forget that a 4k screen would still be a huge improvement ( screen door effect ) even if you don't render at that resolution.
But I must say I'm already afraid about CV1 and it's most likely 1400p + 90fps. If only the rendering was optimised for SLI ( or the other way around ).....

Even if you up the pixel count to remove the screen door, rendering at 1080 is going to be blurry as the current version is. 1440p still might not be enough for clarity sake.

Right now, no. But most people with a DK2 in this thread are hitting 1080p @75Hz in some demos already, I'm playing Live for Speed in 1080p at 140fps (vsync off of course..) with my DK2.., in unoptimized Elite Dangerous I hit 75Hz much of the time. So it's not that insane at all to see PC hardware capable to run VR in 4K @ 90Hz in ~5 years.

4k@90Hz is 5x the number of pixels per second compared to 1080p@75Hz. You aren't likely to get 5x GPU performance in 5 years - at current rates you'd be lucky to double performance in that time. Need a big step forward for that eg multi-GPUs and no SLI issues

Does the positional tracking not track how much I move forward and backward? I didn't seem to get closer to the desk or away from it when moving my head in the demo.

90FPS and 1440p has little to do with "life-like graphics", which are usually associated with photorealism.

VR needs fast refresh rates and high resolution for immersion purposes - even if the art direction is not life-like. You could (and probably can) play Tetris in VR, which doesn't look like much, but it still needs to run at high FPS and resolution as to not induce vomit.

What demo?

If the software is done properly then yes, it should track how much you move your head forward and backwards.

Did you guys get used to the controller? This is such a shame since I think fps VR is best experienced standing up.

So i played with the rift for the first time on gamescom. I got to try the demo of superhot. and was kinda bummed because i dont think that game shows the true potential of the rift. Still it was a cool experience, but i'd rather had tried valkyrie or that underwater demo.

It's the demo in the Config utility, couldn't get closer to the desk no matter how deep I looked.

Also stupid question, is there anything I need to set in the Nvida control panel, like the 3D settings?

Hm, that's weird, the desk demo actually has a very high positional tracking volume. There is an option to display the camera boundaries within the demo. Maybe you wanna try that and reposition the camera.

No 3D settings.

It sounds like your camera isn't working. I imagine leaning side to side does nothing too?

My 2500k and Gtx 670 is stuttering on unreal engine realistic rendering demo. I'm scared. Is it inevitable that I have to upgrade soon?
I'm on a 670 and the Realistic Rendering demo is completely smooth.

I tried everything and i cannot use the rift with anything from steam.. The steamVR thing doesn't even recognize the rift.

Library > Tools > SteamVR (rightclick) > Properties > Betas > select beta from the dropdown menu. SteamVR should then update and work with DK2.

Thx it's now recognized but of course doesn't work in direct mode nor in extended one (i tried estranged). If i need to put the rift in primary display to use it, fuck them. It shouldn't be a mess like that to use soft that are meant to be upgraded to the dk2.. This is just too much of a mess.

You should ask for your money back. How dare they!
